Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The entirety of Leg 5 was spent on which B.C. landmass?

Answer: Vancouver Island

Teams started their fifth leg of the race from Sooke, British Columbia, down near Victoria on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, and proceeded to a charter bus stop to catch a ride to Ucluelet, B.C., further up along the west coast. The two buses available would deliver teams fifteen minutes apart in Ucluelet Harbour where they would have to drive brand-new Chevrolet Silverados to Hotel Zed in Tofino and experience a tarot reading (though they would end up spending a night at a MacKenzie Beach bonfire first).

Once they received their psychic session, they could put themselves to work, heading back into Ucluelet to visit Ukee Ice Manufacturing Company and haul nearly eighty pounds of crushed ice to a local business in town. Completing the delivery and returning to the starting point would get them their next clue enclosed in a block of ice.
2. Which of these race mechanics was found by teams in Leg 5 in Tofino, B.C.?

Answer: Blind Double Pass

Following the ice task, teams needed to take a dive, heading to nearby Little Beach and donning a wetsuit to dive into the chilly Pacific waters. For this task, one teammate had to search for a series of flags tied to buoys beneath the water, each listing an ingredient in a Guru Organic Energy Drink. If they could bring back three different ingredients they could get their next clue and proceed to Tacofino, back in Tofino.

It was at Tacofino that teams found the Blind Double Pass, a race mechanic allowing two teams to choose another team to stop in their tracks. The selected teams would only be able to proceed, collecting their next clue, when the next team had passed them. Derek and Jaspal used this first, forcing Ty and Kat to wait, while Ben and Anwar used theirs on Gracie and Lily.
3. In the 'By Sea' Detour task in Leg 5, teams had to harvest which of these from the Pacific Ocean?

Answer: Kelp

Teams reaching Tacofino grabbed the Detour when they were able to reach the food truck and were told to embark on either 'By Sand' or 'By Sea' (with tacos in-hand).

In 'By Sand', teams headed to South Chesterman Beach and sifted through three hundred sandcastles searching for one of only a handful containing a marked sand dollar. If they did not find one, they had to rebuild the sandcastle and keep looking. Derek and Jaspal and Jermaine and Justin completed this.

In 'By Sea', teams instead made their way to Naas Foods to board a boat to take them to Clayoquot Sound, twenty minutes off Tofino's shore. There, they had to harvest twenty kilos of fresh ocean kelp, delivering it for their next clue. Tyler and Kayleen, Ben and Anwar, Ty and Kat, Deven and Amanda, and Gracie and Lily completed this challenge.
4. How many teams used their Assist to lessen the difficulty of the aerial posing Road Block in Leg 5

Answer: Two

Completion of the Detour allowed teams to embark on their Leg 5 Road Block, and for this one, one team member needed to be 'ready to knock on wood'. For this challenge, teams headed to North Chesterman Beach and the selected teammate had to locate the Sitka spruce trees, joining a group of aerialists to learn a choreographed dance consisting of nine different poses then performing them suspended in the forest. Teams who needed help were able to use their Assist on this task, reducing the amount of poses they needed to five (instead of nine). Tyler and Kayleen and Gracie and Lily used theirs at this opportunity.
5. Which team was eliminated at the end of Leg 5 in B.C.?

Answer: Gracie and Lily

When teams finished their Road Block tasks, they were directed to their fifth Pit Stop of the race waiting for them at Long Beach in the picturesque Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. On the water's edge, Tyler and Kayleen ran through the sand to the mat to collect a first place win-- their first-- taking with them a trip for two to New Orleans courtesy of Expedia.

Despite using their Assist, Gracie and Lily were unable to keep up with the pack after arriving late to the Blind Double Pass. Because of this, and despite strong showings in earlier legs, they were eliminated from the race in seventh place.
6. The sixth leg of the race asked teams to fly east, out of British Columbia for the first time in four legs. What province did they head to?

Answer: Ontario

Starting Leg 6 in Tofino, B.C., racers opened their clues with the reminder that they would need to use either their Express Passes or their Assists by the end of this stretch of tasks, and those would be completed in Southern Ontario's Niagara Region.

After flying halfway across the country more than four thousand kilometres, teams would hop into a brand-new Chevrolet Blazer RS at Pearson International Airport and open a clue leading them to Salem Chapel in St. Catharines. After learning about Harriet Tubman in a local tour about the Underground Railroad, they would receive their next clue.
7. How many Express Passes were used by teams during the V8 engine Road Block task in Leg 6?

Answer: Two

Teams raced on to the St. Catharines Propulsion Plant after their stop at the Salem Church and it was done with a Road Block task in-hand. For this challenge, one team member needed to be 'up to speed', joining the General Motors auto workers there to learn to make a V8 engine head.

After watching an ongoing demonstration, the racers had to assemble and disassemble the engine head in the allotted time of two minutes and ten seconds to get their next clue. Kayleen, Deven, Ben, Jaspal, Ty, and Justin were chosen for this task though Ben and Kayleen used their Express Passes to opt out of completing it.
8. The Detour encountered in Leg 6 was a Blind Detour. Which task ended up getting finished by the most teams?

Answer: 'Here' - Working with floral arrangements

After the engine Road Block teams found a Blind Detour-- a choice between 'Here' and 'There' that relied a fair bit on luck to get teams where they wanted to be.

In 'Here', teams drove to the United Floral Distributors in Pelham, Ontario, thirty minutes southeast of St. Catharines. There, teams had to used provided flowers in the warehouse to create three different, complex floral bouquets. Then, using a Samsung Galaxy smartphone, they had to create a 360-degree video to show off their work, sharing the videos to get their clue. Ben and Anwar, Tyler and Kayleen, Deven and Amanda, and Jermaine and Justin headed to this one.

In 'There', teams instead drove thirty minutes south into Welland to find the Welland International Flatwater Centre and took to the water, training with athletes and learning how to properly paddle a two-person, high-performance racing scull. Getting their next clue meant finishing a two hundred metre run of the course in under two minutes. Ty and Kat and Derek and Jaspal went for this one though Ty and Kat used their Express Pass to skip the challenge.
9. The second Road Block encountered by teams in Leg 6 had teams working heavy machinery at which of these?

Answer: A grape vineyard

Leaving the Blind Detour, teams had to drive themselves to Niagara-on-the-Lake for a second Road Block task, this one forcing the racer who didn't complete the V8 challenge to participate. As such, Kat, Anwar, Tyler, Derek, Jermaine, and Amanda headed to a challenge at the winery at the Château des Charmes.

There, they would hop onboard a grape harvester and deliver water across the property to two troughs. If they wanted to use their Assist in the last opportunity for the race, they would only have to fill one trough. Sure enough, all remaining teams with this ability did so, meaning Ty and Kat, Ben and Anwar, Derek and Jaspal, and Deven and Amanda only filled the one.
10. Which team was last to arrive at the Pit Stop at Fort Mississauga the end of Leg 6?

Answer: Jermaine and Justin

After the second Road Block, teams raced to Niagara-on-the-Lake's downtown reach to find the 124 on Queen Hotel and Spa. There, if they could use their senses to the best of their abilities, they could match six wines by their scents and receive one last clue for this leg, directing them to the Pit Stop at Fort Mississauga. As they handed in their car keys for the wine lessons, they had to travel there on foot.

Though they were last going into the Detour, Ty and Kat managed to get back ahead with their Express Pass and Assist, landing on the mat in first place to win a trip for two to Athens, Greece courtesy of Expedia.ca. It would be their third time winning a leg. The last to check in would be Jermaine and Justin, who were spared from elimination.

Interestingly, a number of the teams were held to the side of the mat upon check-in. While Ty and Kat and Ben and Anwar secured tickets on their next train, the others would have one more to-do.
