At the Fourth of July celebrations, families enjoy the festival that Mayor Kline has started none-the-wiser that something is amiss in Hawkins, emerging from the steel mill outside the edge of town. While Kline amps up the town, the Wheelers hop into a seat on the ferris wheel and ascend into the sky. It's then that the fireworks are let off; overhead the sky bursts in red, white, and blue. From their seat, Holly watches as the trees move in the woods nearby. No one sees the Mind Flayer passing through.

At Hopper's house in the woods, the fireworks are still visible. El informs the others of what she found and what the Mind Flayer said. He's building something and it's to stop Eleven. She's the only thing that can stop him and if she's kept away, then they're all in danger.

Answer: He doesn't know; the Russians took them

As the kids contemplate their options, Nancy hears something in the woods outside and has to ask El where she was when she spoke to Billy. Knowing that it was in the very room they're all in, and knowing that Will feels something unearthly, they're aware that the Mind Flayer knows where they are. As the fireworks burst out overhead, they finally see the Mind Flayer coming through the trees, barrelling straight towards them. They arm themselves and board up the building as best as they can, but there's little time to do it.

Under Starcourt, Dustin and Erica finally transport Robin and Steve back to the elevator and use the acquired keycard to shoot them back to the surface. While the kids try to determine if their friends have been drugged (they have), Dustin also tries to locate Steve's car in the parking lot outside. Unfortunately, the car's off the board; the Russians took the keys. The problem solves itself somewhat when they're forced back into the mall by armed guards.

Answer: On her leg

The kids barricade themselves into Hopper's cabin but it doesn't much matter. The Mind Flayer breaks in through the wall with one of its tentacles, nearly grabbing El but getting stopped by Jonathan, who hacks at it with an axe, and Nancy, who fires at it with a shotgun.

It all still comes down to El, however, as her telekinesis is the only thing that can keep it at bay with any significant strength. It grabs her and nearly pulls her through the ceiling but Mike and the others are able to grab her long enough for Nancy to load the shotgun and fire on it. Lucas, grabbing the axe, severs its tentacle but a piece of it still remains attached to El's leg until it's pulled off to return to the mass.

The injury is substantial, and while El is able to tear the Mind Flayer in half to temporarily subdue it, she needs to be carried to the car so they can make their escape.

Answer: Back to the Future

Dustin leads Steve, Robin, and Erica through the hallways of the mall in an effort to shake the armed Russian guards pursuing them and they emerge into the Starcourt movie theatre, blending into the crowd while they watch "Back to the Future". He tells Steve and Robin to take a seat up front and not to go anywhere while he and Erica stay on the other side. He leaves Erica to watch the others while he finds a ride.

Driving back to Indiana, Alexei tells Murray the location of the keys to turn off the machine under Starcourt while Hopper drives. There's a vault, however, and to enter it they need to use Planck's constant. Hopper and Joyce bicker with one another about the best course of action until Murray lays out that they're brimming with sexual tension, yelling at them to pull over or stop altogether.

The kids, however, driving back into Hawkins proper, head straight to the grocery store to collect first aid supplies for the gory bite on El's leg. While Max takes the lead on tending to her friend's wound, she sends the others to gather what they'll need to do that...and that's exactly how Lucas and Will get distracted by fireworks. Five of them together, they might as well have a stick of dynamite.

Answer: Mike

Mike stays with El in the first aid aisle and he says that he needs to tell her how hard it's been to be broken up. He was jealous and angry because of how much time she was spending with Max, but he's sorry because it was unfair to be that way. He almost admits to her that he loves her, but they're interrupted by Dustin, communicating through Lucas' walkie talkie. Though Dustin tries to get all the info he needs out (and ask for a ride from Nancy), his walkie finally loses the rest of its battery, leaving him and the others stranded at Starcourt.

When Dustin returns to the theatre he asks Erica for batteries (which she doesn't have) but realizes there's a bigger problem-- Robin and Steve got out of their seats. They end up in the lobby, getting drinks from the water fountain and marvelling at the lights on the ceiling before experiencing some severe motion sickness.

Answer: Fireworks

Hopper's stolen convertible makes it to the fairground where he and Joyce believe the kids have headed to celebrate the Fourth of July. He tells Murray to stay with Alexei and, in the meantime, heads along with Joyce. They pass right by Mayor Kline who, having assumed the Russians found and killed Hopper, phones them from his car to make good on his end of the deal.

In the grocery store El uses her powers once again, this time in an attempt to locate Dustin, and when she lets the others know he's hiding in the movie theatre, they're a little unsure if that could be right (considering the circumstances). The kids take the fireworks from the store and load up the car before heading out. What they neglect to notice is the movement in El's bloodstain, back in the first aid aisle.

In the movie theatre bathroom, Steve and Robin finally throw up enough to stop the room from spinning but they find they're still slightly under the effects of the serum given to them. Robin asks Steve if he's ever been in love and he admits that he was in love with Nancy in first semester of senior year. He's found someone better though, and that's when he lets her know that he seems to have fallen for her, she stops him. She lets him know, with complete honesty, that she's a lesbian; he just doesn't know enough about her. She likes him, but she's not in love with him. Fortunately, the two of them are able to crack jokes until Dustin and Erica find them on the bathroom floor.

At the grocery story, Billy finds El's blood on the ground and informs the flayed.

Answer: The gravitron

While waiting for Joyce and Hopper to find the kids, Murray gets the information he needs from Alexei as to how they turn off the machines needed to open the gate. It's a dangerous process and one where, if they don't do it correctly, could cause immense damage and turn people to dust. Alexei looks forward to becoming an American citizen and joining in the fun when it's all said and done.

Alexei and Murray head into the fairgrounds to pick up some tickets, play the games, and ride the rides. Neither of them notice Joyce and Hopper locating the Wheelers. Karen lets Joyce know that they haven't seen the kids in a while, but that's just how summer goes. They all get stuck on the gravitron during the conversation, Joyce and Hopper holding hands as it spins.

At Starcourt, the movie comes to an end and the gang leaves the theatre amongst the crowds departing the mall. It doesn't help all too much, however, since the Russians are searching the crowd. They sneak past the barricades and head to the lower level.

Answer: Alexei

Alexei, trying his hand at a darts game, ends up winning a massive Woody Woodpecker plush toy and makes his way back to Murray, busy grabbing corn dogs from a vendor. Neither notices the Russian soldier until it's too late, and Alexei can only watch as a gun is fired into his stomach, masked by the sounds of the festivities. Murray sits him down between the stalls and goes looking for Joyce and Hopper, but by the time he finds them, the assassin finds them too. They rush across the grounds with Hopper sending Joyce to get the car; he heads into an amusement ride to lose the pursuers, fighting several of them there.

By the time Joyce and Murray return to Alexei, he's passed away. Fortunately, by the time Hopper reunites with them, he's recovered one of the Russians' walkie talkies, and with that, they discover that the kids have been found at Starcourt.

Answer: A car

The Russians follow Steve, Robin, Dustin, and Erica into the lower level of Starcourt Mall, searching the lobby there for any signs of the kids. Unfortunately for them, while they hide behind a food court countertop, the Russians find them and converge on their location. The men, however, are stopped when a raffle vehicle starts making noise beside them, a clear distraction tactic from El on the upper floor. She uses her powers to toss the car at the men, saving the others from the group.

As the kids all reunite on the lower level, the make hasty introductions and pull all their findings together-- the Russians, the codes, the lab, the superpowers, the code red-- and realize they've all been coming to the same conclusions. El, however, collapses to the sound of an awful droning noise. Complaining about her leg, the others remove her bandages to find something moving inside.
