Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Billy, escaping from the old mill, is pulled into the Upside Down when he tries to do which of these?

Answer: Call 911

After he's dragged deep into the old mill, Billy manages to break away and race away from whatever pulled him inside. He hops back into his car and flees to the nearest telephone booth, blocking himself in and dialling 911. His call, however, is interrupted when he's transported into a vision of the Upside Down. Looking down the foggy street, he sees a mob of people lumbering through the shadows, and one of them appears to be his exact double.

Eleven, waiting at home, calls the Wheeler residence looking for Mike. Mike has to make up a lie about his Nana-- one that both Hopper and Mrs. Wheeler complicate-- to ensure they don't meet up for the day. Hopper's thrilled his plan is working.
2. Hopper's talk with Mike succeeds in keeping him away from El. What excuse does Mike give to avoid seeing her?

Answer: His nana is sick

Eleven calls Mike and tries to convince him to come over but it's clear that he's making up lies to avoid getting together. She doesn't know that Hopper's already spoken to the boy, scaring him into staying away.

While El sits confused on the other end of the line, Hopper drives into town ecstatic that his threats worked. He confides in Joyce that his plan worked and invites her out to dinner. Their planning is cut short when he's sent to town hall to deal with the protesters waiting there. As he leaves, Joyce finds that a number of the store's fridge magnets appear to have lost their magnetism, just like the ones at home.

At work, Nancy continues thinking on her lead about the rats. She asks the editor of the paper if another girl can take over for her for the day, lying along the way. She grabs Jonathan and they head out to investigate.
3. Who does Dustin ask to help him translate the Russian radio signal?

Answer: Steve

Dustin, finally back in town, heads to the Starcourt Mall to reunite with Steve and tell him all the news about his summer. He lets Steve know that the others ditched him, but they won't be able to revel in any of the glory because when he tried to get in touch with Suzie, he intercepted a secret Russian communication. They can be true American heroes, they just need to translate the messages.

El visits Max at her place for advice and, once everything is laid out, it becomes apparent that even if friends don't lie, boyfriends lie all the time. Max wagers that Mike and Lucas are home playing Atari. In reality, Mike is venting to Lucas about Hopper and his predicament while mike prepares 'Dungeons & Dragons'. Max recommends giving Mike a taste of his own medicine; Lucas suggests that Mike simply stay the course since he'll win her back.
4. Robin can speak Russian.

Answer: False

At the community pool, the middle-aged women of Hawkins wait for Billy to show up for his shift. Karen sees Billy head back into the machine room and she follows behind, hoping to apologize for not showing up at the motel. What she finds is that Billy is severely unwell. He has a vision of harming her but he snaps to it and tells her to stay away. When he takes his seat at the lifeguard station, he bakes in the hot sun and struggles with photosensitivity.

At Scoops Ahoy, Steve and Dustin listen to the Russian recording and argue over the music on the tape. Robin complains to the two of them that they're not only too loud, but getting in her way in the back room, but she insists they let her in on their little game if only because she believes she can help-- she knows four languages and has genius ears, after all. At the very least it will ease her boredom.
5. Mrs. Driscoll informs Nancy and Jonathan that the rats have been eating which of these odd things from her cellar?

Answer: Fertilizer

Nancy and Jonathan arrive at the Driscoll household to speak to the woman who sent in the report regarding the rats. She brings them down into her cellar to show them what she's found, and what it turns out to be is a mess of fertilizer, most of which has been torn into by rat teeth. The bags were full before; Mrs. Driscoll bought them only a week earlier and hadn't used them. She believes the rats could be rabid. She nearly forgets to mention that she caught one of the rats; they hear it clamouring around in a nearby cage, covered from the light.

At town hall, Hopper listens to the protests outside while waiting for the mayor. When he's finally brought in, it becomes apparent the people are simply angry with the mall; the mayor has very little concern. Mayor Kline is going to throw the voters a massive Independence Day part, so he's okay with kicking them off the front lawn in the meantime. They'll forget all about it by then.
6. Joyce reaches out to Mr. Clarke to learn about which of these?

Answer: Electromagnets

Max takes El to the Starcourt Mall for the first time, helping her try to forget the problems with the sensory overload of the building. Though El is initially nervous to go in-- too many people, Max urges her to try everything. At the same time, the boys search through the mall looking for something to get El as an apology gift.

Joyce, reading books about electromagnetic properties that she pulled from the library, leaves work early and travels across town to meet with Mr. Clarke, the boys' science teacher, at his house.
7. Billy discovers that which of these causes him immense pain?

Answer: Sunlight

At Mrs. Driscoll's house, Jonathan photographs the apparently-rabid rat while Nancy calls animal control searching for any word of rabid rats. Nancy turns her attention, instead, to calling local farms and she gets a lead. Neither of them are around when the rat explodes in its cage. Any remains of it slide and crawl out of its containment as if it has a mind of its own.

Billy, in his vision of the Upside Down, speaks to his doppelgänger and asks what it wants. Its response: To build what he sees. Billy doesn't understand, but he awakens at his lifeguard station to find that he's been horribly burnt by the sunlight. He rushes into the showers and doubles over in pain while his colleague, Heather comes in to check on him. He imagines her asking that he take her to the creature, and that's when he lunges.
8. Which of these occurs outside Starcourt Mall?

Answer: El dumps Mike.

El take a shot at trying on a ton of clothes to determine her personal style while the boys understand just how expensive it is to shop for gifts. Amazingly, none of them cross paths while they go about their activities. At Scoops Ahoy, Robin is able to translate the first sentence of the code. Steve is barely able to pay attention; he's just surprised to see El out and about.

The girls finally find the boys when they leave, just as Mike and the others are about to hop on their bikes and go. It prompts an argument, naturally, after Mike tries to scold El for being out in public. She's affirmed in feeling like she's being treated like garbage, and it comes as no surprise when she dumps him before getting on the bus.
9. It's determined that the secret code message Dustin discovered was likely recorded where?

Answer: Hawkins

Hopper starts to arrest protesters and load them into his vehicle and wraps up his work just in time to prepare for his dinner with Joyce. He ends up at the restaurant just in time, ordering drinks before she even arrives. The catch is that Joyce never shows up; he spends the night staring at the front door.

Joyce ends up spending most of her night at Mr. Clarke's learning about electromagnetism. The teacher creates an electromagnetic field using his metal train set to demonstrate how a reduced current reduces the magnetism of an object. The problem is that it doesn't explain Joyce's issues; he chalks those up to her kids knocking into the magnets in the middle of the night at home and coincidence at work. She might, he says, be finding patterns that don't exist. If it's not that, a large AC transformer could exist, but it would be wildly expensive and require too much electricity.

At the Starcourt Mall, Steve, Dustin, and Robin translate a message from the recording: "The week is long. The silver cat feeds when blue meets yellow in the west." It's nonsense to them, and they realize it must simply be a code. On their way out of the mall, Steve comes to realize that he recognizes the music from the tape-- it's from a carnival ride in the mall. It was recorded in Hawkins.
10. Billy ends up bringing Heather to the old mill. Why?

Answer: To offer her to his doppelgänger

Hopper eventually realizes he's being stood up. Drunk by the time he leaves, he stumbles out of the restaurant, accidentally bumping into a man at the bar. He doesn't notice the glare being given back to him as he departs.

Billy, meanwhile, drives back out to the old mill and opens his trunk to let Heather out. Tied up, he carries her into the building and down into the cellar, telling her to remain quiet and she will be fine. As she looks over into the darkness, an awful creature lurches from the darkness. She screams in horror while Billy watches on unaffected.
