Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Do Steve and Dustin manage to find a way up the elevator shaft beneath Starcourt?

Answer: No

Steve, Robin, Dustin, and Erica hurtle down the elevator shaft that contains the room in the Starcourt loading dock until they finally reach the bottom and, though they argue at great length, Dustin points out it might be possible for them to climb out the top. As it turns out, it's not; there's no ladder when they check there though; the only options are to stay put or try something else.

Joyce and Hopper, meanwhile, arrive at the Hess Farm searching Starcourt-purchased properties, and this one happens to have a Lynx Delivery truck outside. They let themselves in, searching the near-empty home to find a couple of signs of recent activity-- a cup of coffee, an ashtray-- and they notice that any working lights seem to be pulsing in their sockets. A loud rumble from below seems to be causing something to happen.
2. At Hess' Farm, Joyce and Hopper find Russian operatives working in the basement. How many do they take hostage?

Answer: One

Joyce and Hopper lift away the murphy bed in the bedroom to find a staircase leading down towards the mechanical thrumming, and with flashlights in hand, they descend. What they don't know is that the man they've been searching for, on his motorcycle, is arriving at the farmstead.

They come upon two Russian men in the basement, neither of whom seem to speak any English, but it's too late to interrogate them since the armed fighter has arrived. Hopper manages to hold a gun to the man's head but the two break into a fight, both of them firing wildly through the room. Hopper ends up greatly at a disadvantage in the fistfight, but they're quickly able to take a hostage and flee, trapping the shooter in the basement long enough to get away in Hopper's vehicle.
3. What happens to Hopper's truck?

Answer: It explodes

Jonathan awakens to the sound of a ringing phone before 6am and it turns out to be Nancy who, calling from the hospital, lets him know what happened with Mrs. Driscoll the previous night. Though she's sedated and the doctors are running tests, she called because something's amiss. Nancy asks to speak to his brother, but he hasn't come home; she's worried he might not be safe.

Hopper and Nancy, meanwhile, only make it so far before the police vehicle breaks down. Cuffing their hostage, Alexei, to a tree, Joyce tries to understand the situation while Hopper works on the truck. He asks her to try turning on the truck, but Alexei hears something wrong under the hood and begs them to stop. They don't, and that's why the truck explodes; Joyce and Hopper make it far enough away just in time.
4. As El discovers, Hopper's plan is to go where?

Answer: Illinois

Joyce, Hopper, and Alexei head out on foot and Hopper reveals that his plan is to get them out to a friend in Illinois who can help them out, as he knows Russian and can communicate with the hostage. El, watching via her powers, realizes that he's heading through he woods with Joyce en route to Illinois, though she doesn't know why. Mike goes off about this-- when Hopper was around, he wouldn't stop breathing down his neck, but now that they need him most, he's off hiking. Since Dustin is missing as well, it's clear something is wrong.

Mike, Lucas, and Will reason that maybe El knows how to beat the Mind Flayer; it won't be enough just to stop Billy. When they hear a knock on the basement door, Mike opens it to find Nancy and Jonathan there. They can work together to solve the case.
5. What's actually inside the green vials in the elevator beneath Starcourt?

Answer: Acid

In the bottom of the Starcourt elevator shaft, Dustin tries to use his walkie-talkie to communicate the Code Red issue. With the mall opening, he feels like there might be someone listening. The truth is that no one is, but someone's coming. Robin hears the sound of a motor on the other side of the elevator door and, to evade capture, the four situate themselves on the roof. Before long, the Russians come in and collect the supplies but before the door can close again, Steve sticks one of the vials of green liquid between the threshold, giving them enough time to slide out before it shatters open.

They discover two things, the first being that the vials contain a strong acid and the second being that a long hallway is laid out before them.

There's nothing to do but walk onward.
6. Alexei escapes Hopper in the woods for a short time, leading him and Joyce to which of these spots?

Answer: A 7-Eleven

At Mike and Nancy's house, Nancy goes over what she knows about Mrs. Driscoll and the events of the previous night and the kids are able to link what happened in the hospital to the time they were attacked by Billy at the pool. Extrapolating on this, El realizes that Heather Holloway might also be one of the flayed people, like Mrs. Driscoll, in Hawkins. Further to this, Nancy realizes that her former boss, Tom, might be directly affected as well, and she, Jonathan, and the kids rush off to the Holloway household.

In the woods, the Russian soldier locates Hopper's vehicle and starts his trek through the woods in pursuit of the missing operative. He's a bit behind them on the trail; Alexei, running away, manages to get them to stumble upon a 7-Eleven on the forest's edge. From there, Hopper commandeers a convertible and they head onward to Illinois.
7. In the Holloway residence, Nancy and Jonathan (and the kids) find which of these eaten in the kitchen?

Answer: Chemical cleaners

The group beneath Starcourt walks the massive tunnel beneath the building, a straight line from their starting point with no sign of deviation or stopping. As they theorize the use for the tunnel, Steve and Dustin realize that it might be connected to the Upside Down in some way. If the Russians know about it, then it could all be part of everything that's already been happening in Hawkins the past few years. Fortunately, someone comes through on the walkie-talkie...it just happens to be the Russian code from earlier, but if they're close enough to receive it, then they know they can communicate with the surface.

Arriving at the Holloway residence, the seven searching for answers ring the doorbell to find no answer. Fortunately, El can use her powers to smash the door in. What they find is a freezing cold home and the smell of chemicals; the family seems to have eaten all they could find in the home, and if they were human it would've killed them. In the dining room they find scenes of a struggle and blood on the carpet. In the garage, they find rope and tape. The flaying is taking place somewhere specific, and maybe they can stop it from there. Their key to that may very well be Mrs. Driscoll provided she can take them.

In the woods, the Russian soldier finds the 7-Eleven and forces answers from the clerk.
8. The lab beneath Starcourt, as it turns out, is being used by Russians to do which of these?

Answer: Open a portal

Hopper and Joyce arrive in Illinois to speak to Hopper's friend, Murray Bauman, who arrives at his front door with a shotgun in hand, urging the Russian hostage to provide his full name. At the very least, at least he can speak Russian. Murray lets them in, but only after performing a thorough search on all three of them. It also takes Joyce blowing up at him to calm down the use of invasive electrical devices.

Underground, Steve, Robin, Dustin, and Erica finally reach the chambers in the tunnel system containing Russian operatives and Erica spies the comms room on the first floor. The four try to stay low as they sneak through the busy rooms and they manage to get where they believe they need to be, but a Russian soldier is already in the room. Robin manages to speak in somewhat simple Russian to throw the man off, but when he reaches for his firearm, Steve uses a more aggressive approach, knocking the guy out. They nab his keycard...but there's something else. Up a flight of stairs, they find their way to an observation room filled with pulsing light. Inside, green vials of acid are being loaded into a rotating machine, and scientists are using it to create a new portal to the Upside Down.
9. When Nancy and Jonathan return to Mrs. Driscoll's room, do they find her there?

Answer: No

In the hospital, Nancy, Jonathan, and the kids stop in to visit Mrs. Driscoll's room but they're stopped by a nurse. Since they can only have two visitors at a time, Nancy and Jonathan go alone, taking their time in the elevator to apologize to one another. The kids stay in the lobby with Lucas distracting Max and Will and Mike also trying to make amends with El.

Upstairs in the hospital, something seems amiss. As Nancy and Jonathan near Mrs. Driscoll's room they find signs of a struggle, and she appears to be missing from her bed. It's there that they're greeting by Tom Holloway and Bruce, from the paper, and they're forced to run, coming across the bodies of the hospital staff on the lower levels. They lock themselves into one of the operating rooms, but Bruce breaks in without trouble.
10. Tom and Bruce are both killed, but what happens to their bodies?

Answer: They dissolve into goo

When Bruce gains access to the operating room he easily lifts both Nancy and Jonathan off their feet and tosses them around. Before Bruce can smash Jonathan with a metal stool, she manages to stab Bruce in the back with a pair of scissors and run, grabbing a fire extinguisher to defend herself.

Tom finds Jonathan on the ground in the operating room and keeps him occupied, beating him up before grabbing the scissors from the floor. He is, fortunately, stopped in his tracks when Nancy, fighting Bruce in the other room, slams the fire extinguisher into the latter's head, stunning both of the flayed men. It allows Nancy to beat Bruce down and Jonathan to plunge the scissors into Tom's neck, killing both.

The power flickers in the hospital when this happens, however, and Will, in the lobby finds that something is very wrong. The kids don't know that, upstairs, both Tom and Bruce's bodies are melting into gooey masses that sludge their way across the floor, converge, and create an inhuman creature.
