In the show's first thirty-nine seasons, there were thirty-eight winners with only Sandra Diaz-Twine being a two-time winner (taking the million in "Survivor: Pearl Islands" and "Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains"). This means that of thirty-eight names, only twenty would be invited back for "Winners at War", showing an even split of ten men and ten women. This ended up leaving only four female winners on the cutting room floor-- "The Australian Outback's" Tina Wesson, "Marquesas'" Vecepia Towery, "Amazon's" Jenna Morasca, and "Samoa's" Natalie White-- and fourteen male winners.
Following the show, it was revealed that Tina Wesson (who also appeared on "All-Stars" and "Blood vs. Water"), Tom Westman ("Palau"), and Todd Herzog ("China") were shortlisted for the cast and ultimately not chosen over the twenty who landed on the beaches in Fiji.
More were invited, however. Earl Cole, who won "Fiji", rejected the offer on account of his wife's pregnancy; Aras Baskauskas, who won "Panama" and appeared in "Blood vs. Water", also rejected the invite, as did John Cochran (winner of "Caramoan"). Chris Underwood was also invited to join, but did not accept as he received the invite on his wedding day.
What resulted from "Winners at War" was the second instance in which a past winner won the title of 'Sole Survivor' (by design, of course). In the end, Tony Vlachos took a second prize-- this one being two million dollars. Interestingly, while he didn't receive all of the votes at the final Tribal Council (Natalie Anderson took four of them), he did manage to navigate the game without receiving a single vote. He was the ninth player in "Survivor" history to manage this feat.
