Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
'Red Light, Green Light' is played in both seasons, as the first game, and is similar to 'Grandmother's Footsteps'. A giant doll with motion sensors in its eyes sings a song as the players cross the field, and every time she stops, she turns round and the players have to stay where they are. Otherwise, they will be 'eliminated', which - as the players find out the hard way - means being shot dead. Protagonist Seong Gi-hun survives after Ali Abdul, a Pakistani immigrant, pulls him over the line. When he plays it again in the second season, he repeatedly orders players not to move and saves lives that way, though not all.
'Dalgona' is the second game in the first season, in which players must choose a star, circle, triangle or umbrella, and cut it perfectly out of a piece of dalgona, Korean sugar candy. If they fail or the shape breaks, they will be eliminated. Gi-hun discovers by accident that moisture makes cutting the sugar easier and manages to cut out an umbrella after licking his candy. Another player, Mi-nyeo, uses a lighter she smuggled in to soften the candy and cut out her star.
'Tug of War' is the third game in the first season. Gangster Deok-su deliberately picks a team of strong men due to having insider information from a doctor collaborating with the guards; Gi-hun, meanwhile, finds himself on a team with three women and an old man, Oh Il-nam. Il-nam comes up with a strategy for the team to win, which includes placing themselves on either side of the rope, putting Ali - the biggest - at the back and having Gi-hun at the front. When Il-nam's plan fails, Sang-woo, an acquaintance of Gi-hun, tells them to take three steps forward, then pull. It works, but at the cost of the other team's lives as they are pulled to their deaths.
'Glass Stepping Stones' is the fifth game to be played in the first season and is one of the most brutal. The players must cross a bridge made of glass panels, some of which are tempered, some of which are ordinary glass. It is almost impossible to tell which is which, and several players fall to their deaths after stepping on a normal glass panel. Gi-hun, Sang-woo and the North Korean defector Sae-byeok are the sole survivors, although Sang-woo later kills Sae-byeok in her sleep.
'Gonggi' and 'Jegi' are games played during the Six-Legged Pentathlon in the second season, where groups of five have to play certain games within a time limit, with each member being assigned a different game. Gonggi is a game traditionally played by girls with colourful bits of plastic balanced on their hands. Geum-ja, an older woman, played it with bullets during the Korean War. Dae-ho, a fake war veteran, plays it on Gi-hun's team. 'Jegi' is a game similar to the American hackey sack, and is played by Gi-hun - who just about manages to keep the 'jegi' up with Frontman In-Ho's help - and Hyun-ju, a trans woman, on their respective teams. They pass all five games; other teams are not so lucky.
'Mingle' is the third game in the second season, and forces players to make cruel and difficult decisions. They have to stand on a carousel and whenever it stops, get into groups of a given number and hide in a room. Some players just make it into a room by the skin of their teeth, while others - such as the shy Young-mi - do not make it in time and are shot. In the final round, everyone has to pair up and Gi-hun's friend Jung-bae pairs up with In-ho, who snaps the neck of a man in the room they need to occupy.
'Hide and Seek' is the fourth game, at the start of the third season, where the players are divided into red and blue teams depending on which colour gumball they get. Blue players are the hiders and are given a grace period in order to hide; they are also given different-shaped keys to unlock the doors of the giant playhouse and escape before they are found. However, the only way to unlock the final door is with all three different-shaped keys at once (a circle, a square AND a triangle). The red players - one of whom is Gi-hun - are the seekers and are given knives to kill hiders. If they do not kill anyone, they will be eliminated. This is the first game where it is made explicit that players will be killing others. Gi-hun himself kills Dae-ho.
'Jump Rope' is the fifth game in the third season and is played on a bridge with the female doll from 'Red Light Green Light' at one end and a male doll at the other. They turn a mechanical jump rope and players have to cross the bridge while jumping over the jump rope and avoiding being knocked off to their deaths. One player blocks the other side in an attempt to win the game, and is only stopped when Gi-hun pushes him off. Jun-hee, a young woman who has recently given birth, entrusts Gi-hun with her baby and jumps to her death, as she has injured her ankle and is unable to go any further. Several men survive the game, but all remaining female contestants die.
'Squid Game' is the final game, played at the end of the first and third seasons. One player has to get from one end of the 'squid' drawn on the ground while the other stops them. In the first season, Gi-hun beats Sang-woo and Sang-woo kills himself so Gi-hun can win and make sure Sang-woo's mother is looked after. In the third season, 'Sky Squid Game' is a variant played on high platforms, where players must sacrifice three players and get from one platform to another via a collapsible bridge. Although Gi-hun and Myung-gi, the father of Jun-hee's baby, make it to the last platform at the expense of the other players, Myung-gi falls to his death and Gi-hun willingly sacrifices himself so the baby - who has been made a player in her mother's place - can win the game.
Croquet, 'Distance', mahjong, 'Osmosis' and 'Witch Hunt' are all games from 'Alice in Borderland', a Japanese series with similarities to 'Squid Game', although the games are far more complex and have a card theme, and many of the characters are based on the cast of 'Alice in Wonderland'. For example, Ryohei Arisu, the main character, is based on Alice.
