Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Player 456, a compulsive gambler with a diabetic mother

Answer: Seong Gi-hun

Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) is the protagonist of 'Squid Game' and, by the end of the series, its winner. He is divorced and lives with his elderly mother, has an awkward relationship with his daughter and works as a chauffeur, but regularly spends both his and his mother's money betting on horses. He is also in debt to a gang of loan sharks, who threaten to take his organs if he does not pay up. It is for this reason that he signs up for the games after being beaten at Ddakji by the Recruiter.

Gi-hun leaves the game the first time around, but rejoins when his mother becomes seriously ill due to diabetes complications, and is unable to pay for treatment because he cancelled her insurance policy. He rejoins to pay for her treatment, and survives mainly through dumb luck or with the help of others; in 'Red Light Green Light', he is unable to move due to a dead player falling on him, and in 'Dalgona', he accidentally discovers that the candy can be softened when his sweat falls on it. Il-nam also throws the game of marbles, and Gi-hun is one of the last people to cross the deadly bridge.

When Gi-hun and Sang-woo are the final two, Gi-hun beats him in 'Squid Game', but gives up and asks for the games to stop. After Sang-woo's death, he goes home and discovers his mother is dead. A year later, he is living rough and discovers the truth about Il-nam, who is alive. His ex-wife has moved to the US with his daughter and he plans to visit them, but stops when he realises the games are still going on, and that he is being tracked, and decides to stay and fight back against the organisers.
2. Player 218, a successful businessman who has been embezzling money

Answer: Cho Sang-woo

Cho Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo) is an acquaintance of Gi-hun from the Ssangmun-dong district of Seoul, and a graduate of Seoul National University. He and Gi-hun played 'Squid Game' as kids. He is intelligent and successful, and his mother owns a fish stall, but he has also embezzled money from his clients and has put his mother's business up as security. When he and Gi-hun encounter each other in the games, he tells Gi-hun to hide behind people and helps him get through 'Red Light Green Light'. He is later revealed to be one of the most ruthless contestants, along with Deok-su.

Cho returns to the games after discovering that he is wanted by the police. He tries to commit suicide by smoke inhalation, but is stopped by a visit from the recruiters. He strikes up a friendship with Ali Abdul, but betrays him in the marble game by stealing his marbles and swapping them for stones, sending him on a wild goose chase and quitting the game since technically, he won. In the tug-of-war, he comes up with a plan to throw the other team off balance by taking three steps forward and then pulling. On the bridge, he pushes Do Jung-soo to his death and also murders Sae-byeok to stop her and Gi-hun voting to end the games.

When Gi-hun beats Sang-woo, he asks the guard to end the game so both men can live. However, Sang-woo kills himself with his steak knife and dies in Gi-hun's arms. Before he dies, he asks Gi-hun to look after his mother (which Gi-hun does).
3. Player 199, a Pakistani immigrant who accidentally injured his boss

Answer: Ali Abdul

Ali Abdul (Anupam Tripathi) is a Pakistani factory worker, implied to be an illegal immigrant, and has missing fingers. He is shown to be very strong; for example, he grabs Gi-hun by the collar in 'Red Light Green Light', saving his life. He befriends Sang-woo after Sang-woo gives him money to get home, calling him 'hyung' (Korean for 'brother'). After he quits the games, he gets into an argument with his boss over unpaid wages and accidentally shoves him into a machine, maiming his hand, before running off with his wages. He tells his wife to go to Pakistan with their daughter and rejoins the games.

Ali acts as the team's anchor in the tug-of-war game due to his strength. However, the marbles game is where he comes undone; Sang-woo takes advantage of their friendship to persuade Ali into playing a second game, accusing him of cheating. He swaps Ali's marbles for stones and sends him on a false errand. By the time Ali realises he has been tricked, it is too late and he is shot dead by the Pink Soldiers.
4. Player 212, an obnoxious woman who claims to be a single mother

Answer: Han Mi-nyeo

Han Mi-nyeo (Kim Joo-ryoung) claims to be a single mother, although it's not confirmed how true this is. She is very loud and has a tendency to suck up to people while putting others down, initially joining Deok-su's group. She helps him get through 'Dalgona' by sneaking a lighter into the games, which she uses to melt the candy, and is part of the group who push in the rations queue and get a second helping. The two also have sex in a toilet. Earlier, she distracts the Pink Soldiers by pretending to be constipated while Sae-byeok investigates the air ducts.

Mi-nyeo's alliance with Deok-su does not last. Thanks to having Byeong-gi on his team, Deok-su knows that the next game is tug-of-war and makes a point of seeking out strong men, and turns Mi-nyeo down. She joins Gi-hun's team instead. In the marbles game, nobody wants to partner with her and Deok-su shoves her to the ground when she begs him, humiliating her and causing her to swear revenge. However, this saves her life as she is escorted back to the dorms by the Pink Soldiers and sits the round out.

In the bridge game, when Deok-su blocks the bridge, Mi-nyeo grabs hold of him and refuses to let go. She leans backwards and falls through a glass panel, killing them both.
5. Player 017, a glazier

Answer: Do Jung-soo

Do Jung-soo (Lee Sang-hee) is a minor character who becomes more prominent in the deadly bridge game. He worked as a glazier for thirty years, but was fired from his job for drunk driving. He is able to tell which panels are ordinary glass and which are tempered glass because of the light refraction, but the Front Man turns the lights off to make it harder to see the glass after the VIPs complain. When Jung-soo is asked why he didn't mention it earlier, he says it is because he did not trust the other players besides Sae-byeok, Gi-hun, and Sang-woo, the other three left.

With the lights out, Jung-soo suggests tapping the panels to see what sound they make, but the group runs out of things to throw at them. Sang-woo becomes impatient as time is running out and pushes Jung-soo off the bridge to his death. When a shocked Gi-hun challenges him, Sang-woo argues that he knew which panels were safe but was happy to let others die, and that he was holding them up.
6. Player 101, a vicious gangster and pimp

Answer: Jang Deok-su

Jang Deok-su (Heo Sung-tae) is a violent thug and one of the most dangerous characters in the game. He amasses a group of followers, one of whom - Player 278 - becomes his marbles player and another, Mi-nyeo, becomes his lover, albeit not for long. Deok-su is first shown beating up Sae-byeok and it is implied that he was her pimp. When he leaves the games for the first time, he is revealed to be in debt to both his bosses and Filipino gangsters, and is grassed up to the latter by a minion, who he murders in revenge. He then jumps off a bridge and swims to safety when the Filipinos chase him.

Deok-su's group pushes into the queue for rations and gets themselves second helpings, and when Player 271 argues with him and breaks his bottle, Deok-su beats him to death in a rage. He instigates a riot at night - which the organisers were hoping for - and kicks off by murdering Player 198 after she accuses him of hogging food. He makes an alliance with Byeong-gi, allowing him to join his team in return for information about the games, which is what enables him to pick an all-male team for the tug-of-war. In the marbles game, he beats Player 278 through sheer luck, as Player 278's marble hits a stone and knocks Deok-su's marble into a hole.

Deok-su plans to start another riot on the fourth night, but Gi-hun warns him that with the final not far off, his allies may be planning to eliminate him because he is a threat and one of the strongest players, and he backs down. In the bridge game, Deok-su reveals his cowardly nature when he refuses to move and blocks the bridge, even pushing another player off. He is only stopped when Mi-nyeo grabs him and pulls him backwards, eliminating them both from the game.
7. Player 001, an old man dying of cancer

Answer: Oh Il-nam

Oh Il-nam (Oh Yeong-su) is the oldest player in the game, and is suffering from dementia (or so it seems) and has terminal cancer. Unlike the others, he does not join the game because he is in debt; his reason is to relive the joy of being alive. He strikes up a friendship with Gi-hun and calls them 'gganbu', which roughly means 'old and close friends'. In the tug-of-war, he comes up with a plan that saves the team and enables them to win, despite them having three women and an old man in the line-up. During the brawl started by Deok-su, he climbs up the bunk beds and pleads with the players to stop. This takes on new significance later.

Il-nam partners with Gi-hun in the marbles game and Gi-hun takes advantage of his senility to trick him into losing games; however, Il-nam reveals that he is aware that Gi-hun is taking advantage of him, and that he is letting him win on purpose. He remembers his name just before he is taken away by the Pink Soldiers. Although we hear a gunshot, we do not see his death.

After the games, Gi-hun receives a card with 'Gganbu' and an address, which is Il-nam's apartment. Il-nam is revealed to be alive, albeit dying, and he reveals to Gi-hun that he is the host and creator of the games (he is the wearer of the owl mask). He created the games as amusement for himself and his friends, because he is a misanthrope who hates the poor and believes humans are all selfish. However, his friendship with Gi-hun is genuine.

Il-nam has one last bet with Gi-hun over whether or not people will help a homeless man by midnight. Il-nam thinks he has won when a passerby seemingly walks past without helping, but he is proven wrong when an ambulance picks the man up. However, by the time this happens, he is dead. Hwang In-ho, the Front Man, closes his eyes after Gi-hun leaves.
8. Player 111, a doctor involved in an organ harvesting ring

Answer: Byeong-gi

Byeong-gi (Yu Seong-ju) is a doctor who was struck off for malpractice and has a deal with a group of Pink Soldiers involved in an organ harvesting ring. They deliberately keep some players alive so they can harvest their organs and sell them on the black market, and have enlisted Byeong-gi because of his medical knowledge. In return, they feed him information about the games (literally, as they place notes with hints in his food) so that he can stay alive to help them. He joins Deok-su's group, offering to tell him what the games are in return for an alliance.

The Front Man becomes suspicious when Deok-su makes a point of picking a team of big, strong men for the tug-of-war, implying he knows what the game is, and stops providing information. Byeong-gi becomes increasingly stressed due to lack of sleep, lack of food and not having decent equipment, and inadvertently saves Jun-ho when he yells at the Pink Soldiers to shut up when they grow suspicious of his questioning. During one dissection, he snaps and attacks a pair of Pink Soldiers with a crowbar, killing one of them, before running off to the playground.

The Front Man arrives at the playground with other Pink Soldiers, and kills both Byeong-gi and the Pink Soldiers involved in the ring for cheating and making the game unfair. He has their bodies hung up on display on the staircase the following day, as a warning to the other players.
9. Player 067, a defector from North Korea

Answer: Kang Sae-byeok

Kang Sae-byeok (Jung Ho-syeon) is a defector from North Korea and a petty criminal, whose younger brother Cheol lives in a children's home. She is implied to have been prostituted out by Deok-su. When Gi-hun bumps into her, she steals his winnings, and he confronts her about it when he recognises her in the game. Deok-su beats her up, but she gets revenge by standing behind him in 'Red Light Green Light' and threatens to push him.

When Sae-byeok leaves the games for the first time, she visits Cheol, who asks her when their mother is coming, and threatens a broker over trying to get her mother out of North Korea; her mother did try to escape, but was caught in China and arrested. Her father was shot while trying to escape and her other brothers died of disease. She sneaks into the vents with Mi-nyeo's help to look for clues about the games, and discovers that the second game involves boiled sugar. In the marbles game, she partners with Ji-yeong and is devastated when she sacrifices herself to get Sae-byeok to the next round. Despite getting off to a bad start with Gi-hun, the two end up becoming allies.

Sae-byeok is seriously injured when the bridge explodes after she, Gi-hun and Sang-woo have crossed it, and a piece of glass is embedded in her abdomen. When the three finalists are given a steak dinner, she barely touches it and although she cleans her wound, it is implied to have become infected, as she becomes increasingly delirious. Gi-hun runs to get help, but while his back is turned, Sang-woo kills her; ostensibly to put her out of her misery, but also because she and Gi-hun would have voted to end the games, and he wants to continue. After the games, Gi-hun ensures that Cheol is looked after; he goes to live with Sang-woo's mother.
10. Player 240, a young woman who was abused by her father

Answer: Ji-yeong

Ji-yeong (Lee Yoo-mi) mainly features in the tug-of-war and marbles games. She is one of the members of Gi-hun's team, is very aloof, and is shown to have a dislike of religious people, as she gets annoyed with Player 244 for his constant praying. It is later revealed that she was sexually and physically abused by her father, who was a religious fundamentalist and would pray for forgiveness after abusing her and her mother. He killed her mother, and Ji-yeong killed him in revenge and ended up in prison, as well as inheriting his debts; the recruiters found her when she got out.

Ji-yeong befriends Sae-byeok after partnering her for the marbles game and the two tell each other their stories. Ji-yeong talks about introducing Sae-byeok to South Korean nightlife and going on holiday, but it becomes clear that she isn't planning on surviving the game when she only starts playing at the last minute. She then deliberately throws the game; as she tearfully tells Sae-byeok, Sae-byeok at least has her mother and brother, but Ji-yeong has nobody to live for. Both girls cry before Ji-yeong is executed.
