Blood-Starved Beast Trivia Quiz

Answer: Old Yharnam

At the tail end of Old Yharnam, inside a ruined Church of the Good Chalice, is where Blood-Starved Beast is encountered. In terms of completing the entire game, this fight is entirely optional. However, as with other 'optional' fights like Cleric Beast, this fight tends to be a cornerstone of most casual playthroughs.

As such, some less experienced players may not even realize that it is not mandatory.

Answer: Three

From the start of the fight, the beast is active and angry, but is somewhat sluggish and moves at a brisk pace. Once reaching about 70% of its health, it will emit a shrill cry and become far more aggressive. In second phase, its attacks can poison the player as well. When reaching about 40% of its health, it will roar loudly again and become even more aggressive and angry. It will now seep a poison aura, and can poison the player just by standing near them and not even having to hit them to do it.

This fight ends up playing out like an endurance fight thanks to its three phases. It is not uncommon whatsoever for newer players to get stuck on this boss for a short while.

Answer: Antidote

There are three Antidotes here, to be exact. Antidotes remove poison immediately when consumed. It was a pretty clear foreshadowing done by From Software to give the player easy access to some Antidotes; they're going to be needing them shortly.

Answer: Old Hunter Alfred

Alfred's dialogue must be exhausted at Cathedral Ward, and the player must not have slain the Vicar Amelia boss, for him to be available for aid here. Alfred wields the Kirkhammer and Hunter's Blunderbuss. While very rare, it is possible for him to parry and subsequently land a visceral attack against the Blood-Starved Beast.

In any case, he is remarkably tanky, and will survive for a long time. Typically, he will either outlive the player if they die to Blood-Starved Beast, or he will still be alive himself when the beast falls.

Answer: Yes

Literally every single attack this creature uses can be parried, and some of its moves are quite easy to parry at that. It even has a grab attack which can be parried, and grab attacks usually cannot be parried. As such, a player with a steady hand is in a prime position to succeed during this fight.

Answer: Pthumeru

Technically, this is not the single only way to access Pthumeru, but it is easily the most straightforward way. The only other way would be to get to basically the end of the game, kill Ebrietas, Daughter of the Cosmos, and then you would literally have to either punch in random codes or go online and Google a code to a very specific dungeon that itself has the Pthumeru Chalice. What's ironic about this is that this could very easily lead to another encounter with an even more difficult Blood-Starved Beast, as this boss can appear in Chalice Dungeons.

The player could either simply kill Blood-Starved Beast and access Pthumeru in about fifteen minutes, or they would have to go to basically the end of the game, kill a much harder boss, then either use a third party search engine or just hope they get lucky.

Needless to say, Blood-Starved Beast is the logical choice if one wants to reach the Pthumeru Chalice Dungeons.

Answer: Pungent Blood Cocktail

When a Pungent Blood Cocktail is thrown, Blood-Starved Beast will immediately halt whatever it is doing, turn to face the location the cocktail landed, and will beeline it right for the location. If the location is close enough, Blood-Starved Beast will begin to randomly attack the position.

Each use of a Pungent Blood Cocktail will distract the beast for several seconds, enough time to easily land at least one good hit against it for free.

Any formal boss encounter with this beast will see this item stop working once it reaches its third phase. However, any non-formal boss encounter, such as the DLC version, will continue to respond to Pungent Blood Cocktails forever.

Answer: Hunter's Nightmare

The player does really have to go out of their way to find Blood-Starved Beast, as it resides deep inside of a dark, secluded cave that is to the farthest side possible in the Hunter's Nightmare. As well, Blood-Starved Beast is not alone this time, as it is joined by an NPC Hunter using the Gatling Gun and several standard beast enemies as well.

However, Blood-Starved Beast can very, very easily be cheesed in this setting. The beast lays to the corner of a small room inside this cave, laying in wait to try and ambush the player. It is just beneath a small ledge in doing so, and the player can stand atop this ledge and simply throw and shoot things at the beast from a position of complete safety; none of the beast's attacks can hit them, and the beast is not 'smart' enough to realize what the player is doing, and will thus aimlessly attack the wall beneath them until it dies.

Answer: Poison

Visually, when it is struck, the Blood-Starved Beast will spew a clear, viscous looking liquid instead of red blood. This effect is purely visual until the beast ends up low on health, where the player can and likely will get themselves poisoned staying close to the beast.

Answer: Ailing Loran Chalice

The Blood-Starved Beast found within Ailing Loran is actually by very far the strongest iteration of the beast. It has by far the most HP (27,258), even eclipsing its New Game Plus Old Yharnam (22,758) version. In fact, the beast here is stronger than most DLC bosses statistically, which will no doubt make for a lengthy fight.

The player will definitely want to bring plenty of Antidotes with them before confronting the Blood-Starved Beast at the Ailing Loran Chalice Dungeon.
