Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the "Dark Souls" trilogy, the player parries enemies typically with a shield, sometimes bare handed, very rarely but possibly with a melee weapon too. In "Bloodborne", only one tool can parry enemies. Which of the following can achieve this?

Answer: Guns

Most guns can parry enemies. The only guns which cannot are the Cannon, Church Cannon and Gatling Gun. In order to parry an enemy, the player must wait for the enemy to wind up their attack, and they must fire the gun at the very moment the attack is about to be used. For example, when Father Gascoigne lunges at the player and tries to slash at them, the proper moment to parry this is when he is right in the player's face, with his arm in the beginning motion of being swung.

This is difficult to learn initially and, generally, is the largest skill curve the game offers. However, parrying is also extremely rewarding, as players can follow up successful parries with major damage or outright killing whatever they just parried.
2. Hypothetical situation: you are fighting Micolash, Host of the Nightmare. He casts A Call Beyond; a terrifying spell, but you have survived this before, so you aren't initially too worried. You try to dodge it, but right at the tail end of your dodge, the spell hits you anyway. Surprisingly, you are immediately one-shot, despite having survived this exact attack before. Why did it suddenly deal more damage than usual?

Answer: You took counter damage

Similarly to how the player is meant to parry enemies, they will take extra "counter" damage if they are struck by any attack which comes right at the start or end of an action they take. The added amount is 1.5x, so counter damage can be pretty serious. A Call Beyond is terrifyingly powerful, especially off the hands of a diabolical mage like Micolash. Taking counter damage from it is basically an almost guaranteed death. If you're not confident in your ability to dodge devastating attacks like A Call Beyond, the correct choice might be to simply heal to completely full health and just eat the attack, as to not risk taking counter damage errantly trying to evade it.

In any case, this mechanic serves to deter players from "panic rolling" or, just mashing the dodge button aimlessly to evade attacks.
3. Hypothetical situation: You are at full health, but have run out of healing items. An enemy just hit you. Is there anyway at all, whatsoever, to heal the damage off?

Answer: Yes

This game exclusively boasts what is called the "Rally" mechanic. When taking direct damage from anything, for five seconds or until taking the very next hit, it is possible to heal the damage off by attacking an enemy. If it can take damage and the player damages it, doing so will heal the player. If done aggressively and efficiently enough, the player can actually use Rally to heal off every drop of damage that they just took, to reset the position they were in before.

In the hypothetical situation given, even if you run out of manual healing items, it is still possible to return to full health if you are swift enough with the Rally mechanic.

Like parrying, this definitely takes time getting used to. While you are encouraged to play very aggressively with Rally, overdoing it and beginning to play outright recklessly will absolutely lead to taking a death. Rally is incredibly handy, but it does not make the player invincible.
4. Hypothetical situation: You just took a death to Father Gascoigne. He has all your Blood Echoes, so you don't have them for right now. You are also out of Insight, and you have five Blood Vials and Quicksilver Bullets to hand. Your friend offers to come into your world and help you defeat Father Gascoigne. Are you able to summon them here?

Answer: No

In order to summon anyone at all, be it NPC or real player, the host must expend one Insight. If you do not have any Insight, as stated in the question, you cannot summon anyone at all.

Insight is earned in a handful of different ways. The most common is through discovering a boss for the very first time. For example, encountering Gascoigne for the very first time grants one Insight. Then, defeating him or any other boss would give another three Insight.

Another way to earn Insight is by being summoned into another player's world. There are two ways one could earn Insight here. One insight is earned by successfully killing a boss in another player's world. One insight is also earned by defeating an invader of the summoner's world.

The last way to earn Insight is through the acquisition of either the Madman's Knowledge or Great One's Wisdom items. These are consumables which grant one and two Insight, respectively.
5. With the exception of Laurence the First Vicar, every beast boss in this game has the exact same two weaknesses. What weaknesses are these?

Answer: Serrated/Fire

Every beast, including Laurence, is weak to Serrated. Saw-based weapons, such as the Saw Cleaver, Saw Spear, Beasthunter Saif and Beast Claw, will do extra damage to every beast in the entire game.

With the exception of Laurence, all beasts are weak to Fire as well. Fire Paper applied to any melee weapon can take advantage of this, as can Molotov Cocktails. Some weapons, such as the Boom Hammer, can readily take advantage of this as well.

Additionally, beast enemies and bosses consistently resist Arcane, Blood and Blunt. The only minor exception is the Blood-Starved Beast, and only to Blood, as it is entirely neutral against Blood, ironic given the creature's name.

Laurence is the exception against Fire specifically, because he is actively on fire. He is a flaming beast, so to speak.
6. In the context of this game, what is a "Trick Weapon"?

Answer: Main-hand melee weapon

If it can be equipped in the character's right hand and used to attack something with, it is a Trick Weapon in this game. The reason they are called as such is because, by pressing L1, the weapon can seamlessly be adapted from "transformed" into "untransformed" mode, giving the weapon entirely different properties and a revamped moveset.

The Ludwig's Holy Blade, for example, is a simple short sword in untransformed mode. When transforming it, it becomes a beefy greatsword. This is the most simplistic transformation difference, as there are numerous weapons in this game which get far more complex.
7. Oh no, you're out of Quicksilver Bullets! All the enemies near you are dead too, so they can't drop you any more. And now, it's time to fight the boss. Is there a way to get Quicksilver Bullets back without reloading the area?

Answer: Yes

By pressing the up directional button, the player can sacrifice 30% of their health to create five Quicksilver Bullets. These are colloquially labeled "blood bullets" by the community, but they function the exact same as Quicksilver Bullets, only differing in that the player loses the blood bullets if they go back to the Hunter's Dream or take a death.

Clever players can use the Rally mechanic to heal off the self-inflicted damage they commit to in creating blood bullets. While rare, it is possible to damage yourself creating the blood bullets, then go immediately heal the damage taken by beating the tar out of something.
8. Interestingly, Bloodborne technically has some semblance of a day/night cycle. NPCs, and events in the game in general, will change their behavior and mechanics greatly based on whether it is day, night... or something else entirely. Defeating what boss will change the time of day?

Answer: Vicar Amelia

In defeating Vicar Amelia, night will fall, indicating the formal beginning of "the hunt." Structurally, the game very barely changes, but the main impact will be felt interacting with basically any NPC in the game. A myriad of questlines experience dramatic shifts, or outright closures, when night falls. For example, if the player did not at least speak to Eileen the Crow before night falls, she will invade them at the Grand Cathedral much, much later. If they, however, have done Eileen's quest as far as it can be done before nightfall, Eileen's quest can continue to a much more satisfying conclusion later.

In addition to Vicar Amelia, defeating Rom the Vacuous Spider imposes another major shift. This time, the veil which held back the Blood Moon is lifted, exposing the enormous cosmic entity which will hang forevermore over Yharnam.
9. The player will have the chance to pick up four One-Third of an Umbilical Cord items. The player can only do one thing with this item, and it's used to reach one of the game's endings. What is the player meant to have their character do with this item?

Answer: Eat it

Yes, you read that correctly: in order to unlock the game's "secret" boss fight with the Moon Presence and earn one of the game's endings, their character must straight up devour three One-Third of an Umbilical Cords. Four exist in the game, only three have to be picked up.

One is obtained immediately upon defeating the Mergo's Wet Nurse boss. This boss is a mandatory fight, so the player will always come upon at least one One Third of an Umbilical Cord in their playthrough.

One can be obtained off the NPC Arianna. The player must, at the beginning of the game, ensure Arianna is sent to the Cathedral Ward, and not Iosefka's Clinic. Once done, the player must protect Arianna, as her life will potentially be targeted by as many as two other NPCs. They must keep Arianna safe until after defeating Micolash, Host of the Nightmare. After Micolash is slain, the player can return to the Cathedral Ward and kill Arianna to receive a second One Third of an Umbilical Cord.

Another can be obtained by accessing the hidden Old Hunter's Workshop. This is basically a "secret" area hidden away to the side of the Cathedral Ward area. The player will need to embark upon some difficult, lethal parkour to get here. They can then just pick it up once they arrive, as it will be in plain sight.

Finally, if the player goes into the backdoor of Iosefka's Clinic, the fourth and final one can be found here. However, the player must wait until after defeating Rom the Vacuous Spider, where they can encounter "Imposter Iosefka" and kill her to receive One Third of an Umbilical Cord. If the player comes here before killing Rom, it will instead be the regular Iosefka, who will not drop One Third of an Umbilical Cord. Killing her will prevent Imposter Iosefka from ever showing up.
10. How many endings are there in this game?

Answer: Three

When killing Mergo's Wet Nurse, the player can return to the Hunter's Dream. It is here where the ending they receive is finally determined. Gehrman will congratulate the player on a successful hunt, and will offer to mercy kill them, explaining that their job has essentially been completed satisfactorily.

If the player accepts Gehrman's offer, he mercy kills them, and that's that: end credits roll.

If the player refuses Gehrman's offer, he will turn into a boss fight that now must be defeated. When defeated, the player's ending involves them essentially taking over Gehrman's role as a mentor to other, newcoming hunters, for the foreseeable future.

The third, "secret" ending, is slightly more complex. To unlock it, the player must consume three One Third of an Umbilical Cord items BEFORE they defeat Gehrman. If they wait until after, it'll be too late. If they do it before beating Gehrman, the Moon Presence will present itself as the true final boss immediately after Gehrman has been defeated. In this ending, the player essentially turns into the Moon Presence itself and becomes a Great One, to instead inherit the role the Moon Presence took on.
