Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In terms of progressing the game eventually to its completion, is Old Yharnam a mandatory or optional area?

Answer: Optional

Nothing about any aspect of Old Yharnam is even remotely mandatory, nor even particularly influential at that. Having said that, unless speedrunning the game, it is recommended for players to come to this area anyway. It contains useful loot, a very helpful boss fight, interaction with an NPC and more!
2. Before the player can get far, they'll hear a voice from an elevated position speaking to them. This voice belongs to a man who is very adversarial, intent on gunning the player down from a position of safety with a Gatling Gun. What is the name of the man who opposes the player here?

Answer: Djura

Officially known as Djura the Retired Hunter, Djura's goal is to oversee Old Yharnam and, strangely, he wants to ensure that the player cannot harm or hunt any of the beasts lingering within Old Yharnam. To that end, he will attempt to gun the player down before they get very far, peppering them with bullets they'll need to take cover from and cautiously proceed through the area trying to avoid.

Djura can be rendered friendly, but the player will need to enter Old Yharnam an entirely different way, a way which involves them first slaying the Darkbeast Paarl boss fight.
3. Not too deep into Old Yharnam, the player can pick up a weapon. What weapon is it?

Answer: Rifle Spear

The Rifle Spear is, as the name suggests, a long, lanky spear with a rifle fastened to the underbelly of the spear. Uniquely, this weapon can be two-handed with the gun attachment accessible, making it one of few weapons the player can transform while maintaining the capability of parrying.

Infamously, this weapon was nerfed repeatedly in 2015. On launch, it was the most broken thing in the entire game by a million miles. The underbarrelled rifle was simply ridiculous, outputting absurd damage while being capable of landing a parry that could be followed up by more absurd damage via a visceral. The damage output of the rifle was nerfed severely, rendering its utility as a parry tool and nothing more.
4. Old Yharnam is the first area in which it is possible for players to be invaded by other players. What triggers the Bell-Bearing Maiden's appearance?

Answer: Summoning a friend

There are only two areas in all of "Bloodborne" where the Bell-Bearing Maiden will appear without the need for a prior trigger; Nightmare Frontier, and Nightmare of Mensis. Everywhere else, if the player summons a real friend or themselves attempts to invade another player, the Bell-Bearing Maiden will spawn. While the Bell-Bearing Maiden is alive, she will attempt summon an invader into the player's world.

If the Bell-Bearing Maiden is slain, the player's world will no longer be open to getting invaded. The Bell-Bearing Maiden ordinarily spawns in the most annoying, out of the way spots however, so doing this is usually easier said than done.
5. As they progress, a player may find that nearby beast enemies appear petrified of them if they have a certain item. Wielding what item will make (most) beast enemies afraid of the player here?

Answer: Torch

If wielding either the Torch or the Hunter's Torch, most beast enemies will cower as the player approaches, making them easy pickings as they will not fight back. Some enemies will be able to randomly ignore the torch and attack anyway though, so the player should be wary of this.
6. The Powder Keg Badge can be obtained in Old Yharnam. With it, what is one piece of equipment the player may newly buy from the Messenger's Shop?

Answer: Rifle Spear

The Rifle Spear, which could be picked up for free, can also be purchased if the player kills Djura and receives the Powder Keg Badge. Engaging with Djura's dialogue as a friendly and assuring him that the player will not hunt anything in Old Yharnam is another way to do this, as he will simply give the Powder Keg Badge over for free in this case.
7. A very odd item presents itself to the player inside of an abandoned, ruined chapel building. This item is strictly used in the Chalice Dungeons. What item is it?

Answer: Ritual Blood

Ritual Blood is a component needed for the player to conduct Chalice Rituals to unlock certain Chalice Dungeons. The Ritual Blood acquired here is of the level 1 out of 5 kind, fitting since the player can't possibly have even accessed any Chalice Dungeons just yet.
8. A Tempering Blood Gemstone is found in Old Yharnam, and this is most likely going to be the player's first Blood Gemstone of their entire playthrough. Blood Gemstones enhance weapons in various ways. As this is a "Tempering" version, in what way will it enhance a weapon it is attached to?

Answer: Added Physical Damage

Tempering Gemstones are the most simplistic that there are, offering a simple, flat damage bonus that literally any weapon in the game can make use of since they're all physical. Physical is all-encompassing; it includes Blood, Blunt and Thrust damage. Juxtaposed to a Damp Gemstone for example, which only enhances Blood damage, Tempering is a lot more accommodating. Tempering is unsurprisingly viewed as the hands down best type in the entire game.
9. Towards the tail end of Old Yharnam, an Old Hunter NPC may be summoned for assistance. Who is it?

Answer: Old Hunter Alfred

Alfred is only summonable here if the player exhausted his dialogue at Cathedral Ward. If they have, he can prove an effective summon for the boss up ahead, as he is quite tanky and comes with two Blood Vials and one Antidote he can use on himself.
10. Who is the boss of Old Yharnam?

Answer: Blood-Starved Beast

The Blood-Starved Beast, overall, represents a noticeable difficulty spike for this stage of the game. This is the first enemy in all of "Bloodborne" to feature three separate phases, making this fight out to be fairly long winded. As well, Blood-Starved Beast can easily poison the player, largely making Antidotes essential for counteracting this.
