Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Father Gascoigne is a unique case of a boss. He is alternatively encountered as a friendly Old Hunter summon. Which boss can Gascoigne help the player take down?

Answer: Cleric Beast

This was the first time in all of From Software's history that they just straight up gave the player a boss to help them fight another boss. The summonable Gascoigne is the exact same as the first phase of his boss fight. He has the exact same stats, fights in the exact same way, and even makes the same sound effects as when fought as a boss.

As such, clearly, if the player is struggling with Cleric Beast, summoning Father Gascoigne can give them a massive leg up.
2. As a boss fight, where is Father Gascoigne encountered within Central Yharnam?

Answer: Tomb of Oedon

The Tomb of Oedon is the dead end of Central Yharnam, right before the Cathedral Ward. There are a couple of ways the player can reach it: they can go low through the sewers and emerge upward via a ladder. They could also go through the main town of Central Yharnam itself, taking a more direct approach.
3. In the introductory cutscene prior to his boss fight, Father Gascoigne is seen cutting someone, or something, up with his Hunter's Axe before he notices the player's presence. What is Gascoigne butchering here?

Answer: His wife

It will take a keen eye to realize this, but it does turn out Gascoigne is carving up the now corpse of his unnamed wife.

Earlier in Central Yharnam, the player can actually find Gascoigne's home. Inside of it is his daughter, identified as the Young Girl, who is by herself. She will mention that Gascoigne and her mother, his wife, had left the home to travel to the Tomb of Oedon.

After defeating Gascoigne, the player can walk to the spot he was cutting something up in. When they do, they will identify a corpse which is very clearly human. As well, atop a mausoleum in the tomb, a Red Brooch can be found which belonged to Gascoigne's wife. The Brooch is covered in blood, a sign of a deadly struggle which caused it to be torn off.

Finally, Gascoigne is very obviously not mentally well in this cutscene. He has been afflicted with the scourge of beasts, which essentially has driven him into a feral, violent rage. As such, Gascoigne clearly went mad and murdered his wife in the Tomb of Oedon.
4. The player can gain a bit of an edge fighting Father Gascoigne if they pick up a Key Item ahead of time. What item can be used in this fight?

Answer: Tiny Music Box

The Bells mentioned are all related to multiplayer play. None of them are usable in the middle of a boss fight.

When used, the Tiny Music Box will immediately cause Father Gascoigne to enter his second phase. Not just that, but during second phase, up to three times, using this item will stagger him greatly and leave him wide open to a heavy hit from the player.

As such, if struggling, the player should pick this item up. It is acquired from talking to Gascoigne's daughter, the Young Girl.
5. Some fans of this game may be surprised to learn that the Cleric Beast boss fight is completely optional. Is Father Gascoigne an optional boss?

Answer: No

Gascoigne is the game's very first mandatory boss. He is mandatory in the sense that the player cannot progress the game without first defeating him, whereas they can progress all they'd like up to beating the entire game without needing to slay Cleric Beast.
6. When Father Gascoigne reaches his second phase, he goes from being an intimidating, aggressive hunter, into a vicious, man-eating beast. In this transformation, however, he actually inherits two new weaknesses. What is one of them?

Answer: Fire

All beasts in this game, with one exception, are weak to Fire. Gascoigne essentially goes from being a human into being a beast, explaining why he gains this new weakness. Additionally, literally every beast in this game is weak to Serrated, and that includes second phase Gascoigne.

In his human form, Gascoigne is weak to Arcane. When becoming a beast, this turns into a resistance. Players are almost definitely not going to have a way of wielding Arcane though, so this will most likely get overlooked completely.
7. Father Gascoigne wields a Hunter's Axe and a Hunter's Blunderbuss in his human form. He is able to 'cheat' using these tools, however. How does he cheat?

Answer: Using one hand to wield a two handed weapon

If the player themselves transforms the Hunter's Axe, they are forced to then use it with two hands, and they cannot simultaneously have their Firearm out. Gascoigne is able to ignore this limitation, as he can transform the Hunter's Axe and wield it using only one hand, enabling the other to still fire the Hunter's Blunderbuss.

He will begin to transform his Hunter's Axe once the player has done roughly 25% of his health bar in damage. Maintaining access to his Blunderbuss can definitely throw players off.

It's worth noting that he can "cheat" as a helpful summon to the player, as well as during his boss fight.
8. In his human form, Gascoigne fights without much grace, and the player can use nearby tombstones, trees and even a railing on a staircase to interrupt or block his attacks. When Gascoigne turns into a beast, do these methods still work?

Answer: No

Gascoigne fights like a real player during his first phase. So he is subject to the same physics the player is playing by. This means he cannot pass through structures or knock them over with his weapons. The player can use tombstones to take cover from his gunfire, and they can essentially "trick" him into errantly running into or attacking the environment uselessly.

As a beast, however, Gascoigne no longer plays by the same rules. His attacks will now destroy tombstones, he can just bowl them over by dashing through them, and he can simply jump over obstacles as well. As such, come second phase, the player will need to learn to properly square up with him, and they won't be able to use the environment to their advantage anymore.
9. Not long after defeating Gascoigne, the player will return to his boss room and they may be suddenly attacked by a hunter who was once Gascoigne's closest hunting partner. Who is this?

Answer: Old Hunter Henryk

Henryk wields the Saw Cleaver and a Hunter's Pistol. He is encountered as part of Eileen the Crow's questline. If, hypothetically, the player kills Eileen the very first time they meet her, Henryk will not appear at all.

Henryk can actually later become a friendly Old Hunter summon to the player, but only after they kill him here.
10. The player is required to kill Father Gascoigne. They will also find that his wife perished as well. Gascoigne incidentally has a daughter. Is it possible to save her life?

Answer: No

No matter what, Gascoigne's daughter will die in some manner. There are three different ways this can happen, and all of them are frankly pretty horrible.

The first is that the player never ever speaks to her ever again after killing Gascoigne. This will result in the Young Girl leaving her home on her own volition to try and find her parents, only to end up being killed by a Maneater Boar in the Central Yharnam Sewers.

The second is that the player returns to speak to her, where they have the option to tell her to go to Iosefka's Clinic, claiming it to be a safe haven. This is actually an even worse outcome than if the player never talked to her at all. Here, Iosefka will perform unspecified human experimentation on the girl and turn her into a Celestial Emissary. The player will later find her wandering the outskirts of the clinic from behind, where she will attack them and prompt the player to kill her themselves.

The third outcome is that the player gives the Young Girl the Red Brooch, proving that her parents are dead. In this outcome however, she will later be replaced by what turns out to be Gascoigne's other, elder daughter. The elder daughter will inform the player that the Young Girl has gone missing. This is a similar outcome to the first outcome, but with a deranged twist. The player will find a Red Ribbon belonging to the Young Girl on the Maneater Boar in the Central Yharnam Sewers, implying that she met the same fate here as the first outcome. If the player then brings the ribbon to the elder daughter, reloads the area and returns, they will actually hear the elder daughter seemingly thrilled to have received the ribbon, despite the fact that doing so meant the death of her younger sister.

If you would rather avoid the unpleasantries tied to all of these outcomes, simply ignoring the Young Girl and Gascoigne's home entirely is perfectly viable. This entire sequence is completely optional.
