Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bowser tosses the player(s) out of Peach's Castle at the start of the game. Who is not amongst this group?

Answer: Peach

While having a quiet party with Mario, Luigi, Yellow Toad, and Toadette, Peach is beset upon by the typical 'worst nightmare' scenario as Bowser and his Koopalings make an aggressive attack on the castle. The game begins with the player characters being scooped up and tossed across the Mushroom Kingdom, landing in the Acorn Plains, while the castle is left under siege and unprotected.
The Koopalings, meanwhile, scatter across the lands, leaving Mario and others with no choice but to fight their way back to where they started.
2. Most of the different worlds visited in this game are themed around which of the following?

Answer: Foods

Taking a page from the book of "Super Mario World" to a degree, the eight worlds that the player passes through in "New Super Mario Bros. U" all relate to edible things in some way, even if those don't always translate to the contents of the levels themselves. Mario and co. will pass through Acorn Plains, Layer-Cake Desert, Sparkling Waters, Frosted Glacier, Soda Jungle, Rock-Candy Mines, Meringue Clouds, and Peach's Castle before taking their victory lap in Superstar Road if they collect enough Star Coins.
3. The Super Acorn transforms Mario into what animal?

Answer: Flying Squirrel

Most new side-scroller "Mario" games feature at least one major power-up, and this one smacks Mario right in the face as soon as he hits the aptly-named Acorn Plains since he and the group are flung directly into a big Super Acorn Tree from the word jump.

When the player picks up this power-up, they'll transform into a creature with a wingsuit, allowing them to jump into the air and glide in any direction. Additionally, pressing the right trigger will allow them to swoop up into the air a short distance if they're gliding.
4. Which of these is not a colour of Baby Yoshi seen in the game?

Answer: Green

Although Yoshis are alluded to early on in the game's opening cutscenes, the player won't start encountering these helpful dinosaurs until Acorn Plains' third level, Yoshi Hill, where the traditional green Yoshi will emerge from his egg to become a key part of the game.

He's not alone though; Mario will encounter Baby Yoshis throughout the map that will follow you into levels searching for food. There are three Baby Yoshis-- magenta, blue, and gold-- and each has a special power if you feed them enough.
5. You can collect a P-Acorn by catching which of these characters in key levels?

Answer: Nabbit

A new character introduced in this game, Nabbit makes a debut once Mario reaches the end of World 2-1, 'Stone-Eye Zone', as he's found stealing items from the nearby Toad House. Nabbit will take his riches and plunk himself down in an earlier level of the game, and the aim will be for Mario to retrieve the loot by catching up to Nabbit and grabbing him, ending the trial.

In every case (and there are seven in the game), Mario will be rewarded with the rare P-Acorn.
6. Most Worlds in the game contain a Fortress level. Who of these can be fought at the end of each?

Answer: Boom Boom

Bringing back a classic "Mario" platformer staple, each world contains a Fortress about halfway through the map that forces Mario to contend with some horrible machinations of some sort on the way to a mid-boss battle. Boom Boom makes his return in these venues, appearing in the final room wherein Mario must hop onto him (usually) three times to bring the fight to an end.

The catch is that, in most Worlds, but not all, Kamek will swoop in and transform him or the room in some way to make things more difficult for Mario.
7. How many Koopalings will Mario fight in this adventure?

Answer: Seven

Making their return from both "Super Mario World" and "New Super Mario Bros. Wii", the Koopalings (Iggy, Morton, Lemmy, Ludwig, Roy, Wendy, and Larry) appear as final bosses, positioning themselves in the final chambers of their respective castles at the end of each major world (except the last, reserved for Bowser, himself. Each of these foes needs to take three hits to be defeated, but often, Mario will have to contend with new attacks, environmental hazards, and magic abilities that may make this a more difficult challenge.
8. A year after the release of "New Super Mario Bros. U", Nintendo released an expansion game starring which famous character?

Answer: Luigi

In 2013, Nintendo celebrated 'The Year of Luigi', signifying the thirtieth anniversary of the character's debut by releasing content dedicated to Mario's very own brother. What this meant was the release of "New Super Luigi U", an expansion to "New Super Mario Bros. U" with the same control scheme and the same base Worlds, but with all new levels from start to finish. Additionally, in this game, Mario was not a playable character.

Instead, you could be Luigi, the Toads, or Nabbit.
9. The final match against Bowser will involve striking him, generally, with which of these?

Answer: Koopa Clown Car

After a final fiery lead-up to the final battle, Mario will get to face off against Bowser in the traditional bridge ending, allowing him to send the Koopa King into his pit by severing the platform he stands on. Bowser Jr. and Kamek, however, will swoop in to ensure that the battle isn't over there though. Instead, Mario will face off against a magically-enhanced (read: oversized) Bowser and an eager Bowser Jr. on the castle ramparts, leading to a fight where Mario will need to use the Koopa Clown Car to smash down on Bowser three times.

When all is said and done, Peach and her castle will be saved and Bowser will take off with the Koopalings while the heroes watch on.
10. Collecting all of the Star Coins in the game will unlock stages in what ninth World?

Answer: Superstar Road

After Mario defeats Bowser in the believed-to-be-final level of the game, he'll receive access to the hidden last World, Superstar Road. There are nine levels here in total, but each one is accessed when you obtain all Star Coins from the preceding worlds, so getting all of the Star Coins in the Acorn Plains (including those in its secret level) will unlock the first level on the road.

The ninth and final level here, 'Follow That Shell!', is unlocked with the Star Coins in Superstar Road to close it out.
