Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During the opening scenes of the game, who is not present at the table in Peach's Castle?

Answer: Mario

Running near-identically to the opening scene of "New Super Mario Bros. U", the beginning of "New Super Luigi U" sees Luigi, Yellow Toad, and Blue Toad (or Toadette) enjoying a party at Peach's Castle before it's rudely interrupted by Bowser and his gang of Koopalings.

While Mario would normally be present for such a scene, he's represented in this version of the game by an unworn red hat. His whereabouts aren't explained at any point in this title.
2. The fourth player slot, in this game, is occupied by which newer "Mario" series character?

Answer: Nabbit

Nabbit did appear in "New Super Mario Bros. U", but not in a playable role. But with Mario out of the picture for this game, he fills the slot of the fourth possible player (alongside Luigi, Yellow Toad, and Blue Toad/Toadette). Nabbit is considered the easiest of the characters to use due to his general handling and jumping ability.

While Nabbit can't be harmed by foes on any course, he's also blocked from using most enhancements picked up in the game.
3. Most levels in this game have a time limit of how long?

Answer: 100s

Although most of the levels in "New Super Mario Bros. U" gave quite ample time to finish lengthy and complex levels, "New Super Luigi U" does nothing of the sort, instead opting for short, sweet, and quick levels in which you'll need to maneuver with the second brother within only 100 seconds.

This total increases in a small handful of levels, notably castles, where entering a boss chamber will top you up an additional 100 seconds. Otherwise, that's pretty much it!
4. Besides simply not being Mario, Luigi's control scheme is slightly different. Which of these is true?

Answer: Luigi's jump can be sustained for longer

If you got used to the Mario control scheme in "New Super Mario Bros. U", you'll find that things are just so slightly off. All the buttons will do the same things, but Luigi has a bit more slipperiness to his movements and you may find that you'll have to compensate for that as you go through the levels. To Luigi's benefit, all jumps are just a bit higher and can be maintained for a bit longer as his leg kicks (in the air) will bring him just a bit further with his leaps.
5. None of the game's levels contain a Checkpoint Flag.

Answer: True

Perhaps a testament to how short they are, not a single stage in "New Super Luigi U" features a Checkpoint Flag, a way marker designed to allow Mario to resume progress from a mid-way point in nearly any given level in the previous game. This means that every level Luigi encounters in this game must be completed all in one go, and failure always means returning to the start and beginning at scratch.
6. How many Koopalings will Luigi face off against in this game?

Answer: Seven

Although the game contains nine Worlds, seven of those contain Koopaling endbosses (Lemmy, Morton, Larry, Wendy, Iggy, Roy, and Ludwig) before Luigi faces off against Bowser himself at the end of World 8 (and visits the boss-less Superstar Road at the end of the game).

He'll also encounter fights against Bowser Jr. a handful of times, Kamek (who swoops in several times), and Boom Boom, who waits in many of the mid-World fortress levels.
7. Which of these is NOT a World visited by the player in this game?

Answer: Donut Plains

The Worlds visited in this game are identical to those encountered in "New Super Mario Bros. U", even if the levels within them are completely (or at least mostly) different. The odd one out from this set of four, however, is Donut Plains, which appears in the classic SNES "Mario" title "Super Mario World" (it's the second location there).

Instead, players start this game in the Acorn Plains, named as such because of the plentiful Super Acorns you can collect there.
8. Throughout the game, players can find hidden 8-Bit Luigis. Where can these be found?

Answer: In each level

A classic image, whether as Mario or Luigi, the 8-bit version of the character is iconic in its own right, and to celebrate Luigi, each level of the game contains one hidden 8-Bit Luigi, often somewhere completely inconspicuous, though sometimes in a bold way.

The catch is that none of these 8-Bit Luigis hold any significance in the game beyond being a simple easter egg. There are a total of eighty-three in the game-- one per level but two in the final one-- representing the year of Luigi's debut, 1983.
9. When saved, Princess Peach will reward Luigi with which of these?

Answer: A kiss

The final battle in the game (save for an extra World if you collect enough Star Coins) pits Luigi against both Bowser Jr., in a Koopa Clown Car, and Bowser himself, but only after a bit of Magikoopa magic makes Bowser into a colossal foe. Just like in the end of "New Super Mario Bros. U", Peach sits in the tallest tower of her castle, imprisoned, while the player makes attempts to ride up in the Koopa Clown Car and send it barreling into the boss three times.

After the fight ends, Peach will give Luigi a kiss while the enemies-- of the Koopalings, Bowser Jr., and Bowser, will escape (or try) in the airship.
10. The Luigi Block will only appear after you've defeated Bowser.

Answer: True

Although it's called the Luigi Block, this red item actually bears Mario's signature letter and shade. This said, it's still a unique item to find, only ever appearing in levels once you finish the game (or at least the fight against Bowser at the end of World 8). Hitting the block allows you to change the physics in "New Super Luigi U", reverting them to the same settings as in "New Super Mario Bros. U" (ie. replacing Luigi's jump and friction with Mario's).

The block will appear at the very start of any given level and you can go with what you're comfortable with in any revisits.
