One of the more open levels of Acorn Plains, the first World Mario encounters in the game, the 'Rise of the Piranha Plants' level is one of the last he'll encounter there, sitting at one of the branching paths just before Lemmy Koopa's Castle. In this one, Mario remains outdoors in the open fields but will need to navigate his way over and around Piranha Plants of varying sizes. Fortunately, Fire Flowers are also plentiful in these plains, so he can either dodge or face them head-on.
2. Spine-Tingling Spine Coaster
Answer: Grass
While you might encounter a level by the name of Thrilling Spine Coaster in the game's sixth World, the Rock-Candy Mines, the Spine-Tingling Spine Coaster is actually the first of eight secret levels accessed by Star Coins when you visit Superstar Road at the end of the game. To get into this grass-laden course, you need to collect all of the Star Coins in Acorn Plains.
Much of your time isn't spent on solid ground though, since you'll be careening through the course on the back of a big, bony platform headed through a field of Fuzzies.
3. Prickly Goombas!
Answer: Snow
It seems, at least when Mario visits Frosted Glacier, that the Goombas are cold enough to bundle into the worst warm gear to spare themselves the chill. This third-or-fourth-World Level pits Mario against a lot of fire-spawning enemies (Piranha Plants and Fire Bros.) while also plunking Goombas around to get in the way, and a lot of those Goombas are covered in spiky, protective gear unless they get hit by fire. If you're lucky, you may also find Yoshi hiding out, and he can walk all over these guys.
4. Fliprus Lake
Answer: Snow
The secret level of Frosted Glacier, Fliprus Lake is only accessible if you can locate the secret exit of the Swaying Ghost House (a tricky one to find, at that!), and the route will take you to an isolate lake on a distant plateau. Here, Mario's main foes will be River Piranha Plants and Flipruses, walrus creatures with the ability to make and hurl snowballs at you. Completion of this level will unlock a spine coaster that can send you straight into the Rock-Candy Mines, the game's sixth World.
5. Seesaw Bridge
Answer: Jungle
Though some of the platforms in this late level of the Soda Jungle are, in fact, seesaws, some are simply spinning and rotating surfaces that make a precarious trip over poisonous waters all the more treacherous, and Mario will have to dip, duck, and dodge past Wigglers, Piranha Plants, and Koopa throughout to make it to the end. Technically, this level is completely optional as you can complete the nearby Wiggler Stampede level to get to the castle.
6. Wiggler Stampede
Answer: Jungle
If you ever wondered what a level spent on the back of a Wiggler could be like, this one, right at the end of the Soda Jungle, might be your best opportunity. While most smaller Wigglers just get angry when you jump on their back, the biggest ones just plod onward, allowing you to cross vast expanses of poisonous water in the bounciest way possible. Properly timed jumps may actually work to your advantage in getting higher and further as well.
This level leads into the fifth Castle of the game, not unlike Seesaw Bridge.
7. Waddlewing's Nest
Answer: Mountain
Although Waddlewings appear as early as the first stages of Acorn Plains, being enemy representations of the Super Acorn, the level in question refers to the third level of the Rock-Candy Mines, which has a mixture of mountainous and underground environments for Mario to navigate.
This level, besides featuring a number of Waddlewings which swoop around the safer platforms, also includes a handful of Piranha Plants and more than a fair share of Chain Chomps, a rarity to this point in the game.
8. Walking Piranha Plants!
Answer: Mountain
Although this level seems to insist on giving Ice Flowers, most players would probably find great benefit in smuggling some Super Acorns into this mountainous stage due to its dense Piranha Plant population, most of which seem to be able to walk around and extend themselves at will. Additionally, this level's Star Coins require the ability to glide. Found in the Rock-Candy Mines, this level leads the way to Screwtop Tower, the first Fortress not to feature Boom Boom at the end.
9. Seesaw Shrooms
Answer: Sky
Yoshi comes back into play for this second level in the Meringue Clouds set high above the Mushroom Kingdom. Here, it seems like traditional platforming...until you realize that most of the platforms-- a series of narrow mushrooms-- either tilt on a fulcrum or expand and contract depending on their colouring. To make matters worse, halfway through the level you'll start getting rained down on by a Lakitu or two.
10. Lakitu! Lakitu! Lakitu!
Answer: Sky
It's off to a sky level in World 9-7, one of the last ones of the game, unlocked by collecting all the Star Coins in the Meringue Clouds. Lakitu! Lakitu! Lakitu! puts one of its main obstacles in its name since, while navigating constantly-moving blocks throughout the course, Mario will be beset upon by a near-endless stream of Lakitus that will float in and drop Spinies while they're floating around.
The catch is that Mario can take these Lakitus out, take their clouds, and reign from the skies while he can to get by.
