Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
In the US, north-south interstates that end in five are major routes that cross the country. Most of these go completely from the Mexican border or Pacific Coast or Gulf Coast to the Canadian border or the Great Lakes. Of the three exceptions: I-25 starts about 40 miles from the Mexican border in Las Cruces, NM, and goes north, ending in Buffalo, WY, at the intersection with I-90; I-45 stays completely in Texas, the only such major interstate to do such, connecting Dallas with Houston/Galveston; and I-85 starts at an intersection with I-65 in Montgomery, AL, and goes northeast to intersect with I-95 in Petersburg, VA.
This quiz was about I-95. It runs from Miami, FL, to the Canadian border in Houlton, ME. It mostly parallels the Atlantic Coast. It serves as the principal highway link between the cities of the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. It's one of the oldest routes in the Interstate Highway System. It joined pre-existing sections of toll roads. Until 2018, I-95 wasn't competely connected because of the cancellation of the Somerset Freeway. In September, 2018, an interchange was completed between the Pennsylvania Turnpike and I-95, which allowed I-95 to be rerouted creating a continuous Interstate route from Maine to Florida.
I-95 is the longest north-south Interstate, at 1,924 miles, and the sixth-longest overall. It passes through more states than any other Interstate (15) as well as the District of Columbia (DC). With the smaller size of eastern states, I-95 only traverses more than 100 miles thorough eight states. In New York and Delaware, it only goes 23.5 miles through each state; in New Hampshire it only has a little more than 16 miles. But the record for shortest I-95 milage is DC, with only 0.11 miles; the Wilson Bridge carries I-95 from Virginia to Maryland, crossing through the southern tip of DC mid-span.
