The Connecticut College of Commerce was established in 1929, and held that name until 1935, when it was renamed the Junior College of Commerce. In 1951, the name was changed to Quinnipiac College, and in 2000 it was changed again to Quinnipiac University. It is a private university.

Quinnipiac was named for the early Indian settlers who made there homes in and around the New Haven harbor area. It was a name given by the Algonquin tribes who lived along the river for centuries before the Europeans arrived. The tribes were experienced in planting corn, hunting with spears, and fishing. Also harvested was an abundant amount of oysters on the Quinnipiac, as evidenced by mounds of oyster shells they left along the banks.
