Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Okay, so this is maybe a little before my time, but a 1948 issue of Life magazine contained a cigarette ad featuring popular actor Ronald Reagan! Anybody here seen that one? Which brand was he endorsing?

Answer: Chesterfield

Actually, although Reagan posed for more than one tobacco ad, he was a non-smoker. He could have told his children to "Do as I do, not as I say!"
2. Smokers were supposed to be willing to "walk a mile for" which brand?

Answer: Camel

Of course, the smoker of too many Camels might be too winded to walk the whole mile!
3. What did "every Parliament give you" in their jingle?

Answer: Extra margin

The "recessed" filter had a quarter-inch (about 6 mm) cardboard collar to prevent contact with the lips.
4. Which brand boasted about its Micronite filter?

Answer: Kent

The ads showed the filter split open to show how much unappetizing residue had been absorbed! Kent later replaced that filter after it was found to be less effective than others. The ads had already been pulled - the sight of that repulsive residue made smokers think of how much their lungs were still exposed to, and quite a few stopped smoking completely.
5. Which brand had "Filter, flavor, flip-top box"?

Answer: Marlboro

The box was supposed to keep its contents uncrushed. The cigarettes it held were shorter than those packed in the soft package. Consumers weren't all that happy with the box, so later ads changed the words to "pack OR box."
6. Which brand used a penguin to promote its product?

Answer: Kool

Menthol-scented cigarettes were supposed to be more refreshing and, well, cooler.
7. Reaching back a little again here ... What brand changed its package color during World War II?

Answer: Lucky Strike

"Lucky Strike Goes to War!" the ads proclaimed, showing the previously green pack exchanged for a white one.
8. What did LSMFT stand for?

Answer: Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco

Nothing like secret inside knowledge to make the buyer choose a product, maybe?
9. What would Tareyton smokers do?

Answer: Rather fight than switch

The ads showed a black-eyed but beaming person smoking a Tareyton, of course!
10. Which brand's cigarette congratulated its smokers with "You've Come a Long Way, Baby"?

Answer: Virginia Slims

Right. A long way, but just not in the right direction. In 2004, lung cancer killed more women each year than breast cancer. If most cases of breast cancer could be prevented by giving up a habit like smoking, how many women would do it?

Please take care of yourselves, Quizzylanders. I love you all!
