Go-Go's Trivia Questions

1. Which Go-Go solely wrote the lyrics for the song "Surfing and Spying" on the B-side of the single "Our Lips Are Sealed"?

From Quiz
The Go-Go's 10

Answer: Charlotte Caffey

Charlotte solely wrote the two words "Surf! Spy!" for the song "Surfing and Spying." Of the 12 original songs on the album "Beauty and the Beat" and its three singles, Charlotte solely wrote three and co-wrote six; therefore, Charlotte contributed the most by composing 49% of the lyrics on the album. In 1981, The Go-Go's only released the instrumental "Surfing and Spying" on the B-side of the single "Our Lips Are Sealed" and not on the album "Beauty and the Beat." Thirteen years later in 1994, however, The Go-Go's did include this B-side surf song on their retrospective album "Return to the Valley of The Go-Go's."

2. Which Go-Go solely wrote the lyrics to the song "This Old Feeling" on the album "Vacation"?

From Quiz The Go-Go's 9

Answer: Jane Wiedlin

Jane solely wrote "This Old Feeling" and it's one of three songs Jane solely wrote on the album. Love is "This Old Feeling" and Jane was so committed to this "new" feeling, she wrote "I love you" nine times in the lyrics. Jane solely wrote eight songs for The Go-Go's and in the lyrics of five, she uses "love" 13 times; in the lyrics of six, she expresses her "heart" 17 times and in the lyrics of four, Jane couples "love" with "heart" 25 times. Jane also coupled with a Valentine (Kathy) on the lyrics of five songs: "Beneath the Blue Sky," "Daisy Chain," "The Way You Dance," "The Whole World Lost Its Head" and "Worlds Away."

3. Which Go-Go solely wrote the lyrics to the song "Living at the Canterbury" on the retrospective album "Return to the Valley of The Go-Go's"?

From Quiz The Go-Go's 8

Answer: Jane Wiedlin

Jane solely wrote "Living at the Canterbury" during The Go-Go's early years as a punk-rock band. Of the 13 never-released songs on the album and its two singles, Jane solely wrote two and co-wrote six, perhaps while living at the Canterbury apartments; therefore, Jane contributed the most by composing 37% of the "new" lyrics on the retrospective album. In the lyrics, Jane reminisces living at the Canterbury as in a dormitory with roaches; however, "We can do what we want...We can say what we please...We can be who we want...Being poor's okay by me."

4. Which Go-Go solely wrote the lyrics to the song "Kissing Asphalt" on the album "God Bless The Go-Go's"?

From Quiz The Go-Go's 7

Answer: Charlotte Caffey

Charlotte solely wrote "Kissing Asphalt" and she is the only Go-Go to have solely written a song on the album. Of The Go-Go's 15 songs on the album "God Bless The Go-Go's" and its two singles, Charlotte solely wrote one and co-wrote ten; therefore, Charlotte contributed the most by composing 30% of the lyrics on the album. In addition to Charlotte's one sole-writing credit, Charlotte teamed with Anna Waronker on the song "I Think I Need Sleep" to be the only Go-Go with lyrical credit on two songs. The ten outside writers on "God Bless The Go-Go's" contributed the second most by composing 26% of the lyrics on the album: Billie Joe Armstrong, Bill Bartell, Heatherton, Susanna Hoffs, Steve Plunkett, Craig Ross, Jill Sobule, Peter Stuart, Jim Vallance and Anna Waronker.

5. Which Go-Go solely wrote the lyrics to the song "He's So Strange" on the album "Vacation"?

From Quiz The Go-Go's 6

Answer: Jane Wiedlin

Jane solely wrote "He's So Strange" and it's one of her three sole-writing credits on The Go-Go's second album "Vacation." According to a review of the album "Vacation" on the Music Musings & Such blog, "But nearly every song on Vacation is eager to demonstrate some new skill. 'He's So Strange,' for instance, might be just another I-don't-know-what-boys-like anthem except for the cutting guitar line that razors across the last verse...it slices the song with urgent aggression. You're left feeling that Carlisle doesn't think this strange boy is worth another second of her thoughts, and that decision is exhilarating...for her, for us" (Liddicott, 2022).

6. Which Go-Go solely wrote the lyrics to the song "Girl of 100 Lists" on the album "Vacation"?

From Quiz The Go-Go's 5

Answer: Jane Wiedlin

Jane solely wrote "Girl of 100 Lists." Of The Go-Go's 13 original songs on the album "Vacation" and its three singles, Jane solely wrote three and co-wrote six; therefore, Jane contributed the most by composing 45% of the lyrics on the album. One item Jane can check off her list is having written the most personal names in the lyrics of a Go-Go's song, for "Girl of 100 Lists" contains four with "Danny," "Jim," "Ricky" and "Terry." Continuing with names, Jane, Kathy and Jill Sobule wrote the most monikers in a song with five, for "Daisy Chain" on the album "God Bless The Go-Go's" contains "Babe" (Belinda), "Char" (Charlotte), "KV" (Kathy) and "sweet Jane." Gina is metaphorically referred to in the lyrics as "been brought down by a broken heart" because she needed open-heart surgery to repair a golf ball-sized hole in her heart in 1984.

23. Who wrote the lyrics for the song "Johnny Are You Queer?" on the album "Return to the Valley of The Go-Go's"?

From Quiz The Go-Go's 10

Answer: Bobby and Larson Paine

The Go-Go's cover the song "Johnny Are You Queer?"; however, Bobby and Larson Paine wrote the lyrics and Josie Cotton originally released the song as a single in 1981. Fear, beer, queer, premier...this notorious song has a prickly history. In 1978, Philo Cramer and John Clancy of the punk band Fear co-wrote "Fetch Me One More Beer" and recorded it with 12 other songs on a demo tape at Paradise Studios in Burbank, California. While managing The Go-Go's, the Paine brothers heard the song, rewrote the lyrics and changed the title to "Johnny Are You Queer?" According to Josie Cotton's interview with Magnet Magazine, "After they rewrote 'Johnny Are You Queer?' the Paine brothers had the Go-Go's perform it in their live show. It became the band's big song, erupting in total anarchy at the end of the night" (Hedley, 2006). After The Go-Go's made the song popular, Fear challenged the Paines to a coin toss for the publishing rights and the Paines won. After a dispute to tour the UK with the bands Madness and The Specials in 1980, The Go-Go's severed their relationship with the Paines and the Paines forbade The Go-Go's to perform the song. Larson Paine's girlfriend, Josie Cotton, records "Johnny Are You Queer?" as a demo, and the song reaches number eight on Canada RPM Top Singles chart and number 38 on Billboard Club Play Singles during 1981 and 1982. Two years before Josie's single, however, the premiere recording of "Johnny Are You Queer?" is The Go-Go's at the Mabuhay Gardens in San Francisco on 1 Aug 1979, and The Go-Go's released this first-ever recording on their retrospective album "Return to the Valley of The Go-Go's" in 1994.
