It was June 9, 1999, when Valentine of the Mets was thrown out of the game for arguing a call involving Mets catcher Mike Piazza in the 12th inning. Valentine hurriedly changed and came back in street clothes, a moustache and wearing glasses. As a result he was suspended by Major League Baseball for two days and fined for his antics. The Blue Jays won the game in the 14th with a walk-off single by Dan Plesac.

79. Dodger Maury Wills was the first speedster in the 20th Century to steal 100 bases in a season. Who was the first person who broke Wills' record?

Answer: Lou Brock

Except for McGee, all the others stole 100+ bases in a season and won multiple stolen base crowns. Wills stole 104 in 1962 with the Dodgers, then Brock stole 118 in 1974 with the Cardinals. Henderson came along in 1982 with 130 of his own with the Athletics. Coleman stole 100+ three times in the 1980s. Answer: Colorado Rockies

It was the 1993 season on opening day April 9. The Rockies hosted the Montreal Expos for the Rockies' inaugural game. The Rockies ended the season with a 67-95 record and earned them a sixth place finish in the NL West, 37 games behind the division-winning Atlanta Braves.

81. In an absurd record, who was the first American League pitcher to hit three consecutive batters in a game?

From Quiz Dave's Baseball, Ghost Pepper Style 6

Answer: Earl Hamilton

Hamilton was a St. Louis Brown in his second season of baseball in 1912. On September 10th, he hit three Detroit Tigers in a row by the names of George Moriarty, Baldy Louden, and Donie Bush. The Browns lost the game 9-1. Hamilton hit only nine batters in the entire season while going 11-14. Earl retired in 1924 as a Phillie along with his 70 career hit batsmen after 14 seasons.

82. Who was the first player in history to hit 30 triples in a season?

From Quiz Dave's Baseball, Ghost Pepper Style 5

Answer: Dave Orr

Orr was a New York Metropolitan of the American Association in 1886. The first baseman banged out 31 triples and led the league in hits during the season but New York still finished in seventh place of eight teams. Reitz tied Orr's record in 1894 with the Baltimore Orioles of the National League. John Owen "Chief" Wilson set a new season record with 36 triples in 1912 with Pittsburgh. The Pirate outfielder was the only player to hit 30 triples in a season during the entire 20th Century.

Answer: Bill Dinneen

Klem worked a record 18 World Series from 1908-1940. Klem and Tom Connolly were the first umpires inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1953. Dinneen was a pitcher from 1898-1909. He was on the winning side with the Boston Americans in the first-ever World Series in 1903. Bill went 3-1 in the series. He retired in 1909 and worked his first World Series in 1911. He would work eight World Series overall including four in the 1920s. Ironically as it turned out, Connolly, Dinneen, and Klem would all miss the 1919 Black Sox Scandal World Series.

84. Who was the first baseball player in history to commit suicide?

From Quiz Dave's Baseball, Ghost Pepper Style 2

Answer: Frank Ringo

Ringo began his career in 1883 with the Philadelphia Quakers of the National League. Bouncing from team to team, he played for five teams in only four seasons while never batting over .250 with his career average of .192. On April 12, 1889 he was found dead and it was ruled a suicide after taking lethal doses of morphine. Frank was only 28 years old.

85. How many total batting Triple Crowns and pitching Triple Crowns were accomplished in the 1950s?

From Quiz The Abacus of Baseball

Answer: 1

There were no pitching Triple Crowns in the 1950s after fans witnessed five in the 1930s and two in the 1940s. New York Yankee Mickey Mantle was the only player to walk away with a Triple Crown in the 1950s. His bat showed the force in 1956 by batting .353 with 52 home runs and forcing 130 RBIs. More amazingly in Mantle's statistics is that he was a switch-hitter. The "Commerce Comet" was inducted into the Hall of Fame after 18 seasons with the Yankees in 1974. He died in 1995 at the age of 63.

86. In which season did baseball play its last best-of-nine game World Series?

From Quiz Oblivious Baseball

Answer: 1921

There were only four best-of-nine game World Series. They were the first World Series in 1903, then 1919-1921. Ironically, 1921 was the first ever appearance that the Yankees made in a World Series. With all the changes in baseball after the Black Sox Scandal of 1919, Judge Landis, who was appointed as the new commissioner in 1920, mandated in 1922 that all World Series would be in a best-of-seven game format.

87. Which 1990s Major League team had the worst fan attendance for the entire decade?

From Quiz Dave's Dungeon of Baseball 3

Answer: Montréal Expos

The Expos were a better-than-average team in the 1990s but just never had the fan support. In 1999 to top off the decade, the franchise had a Major League leading low attendance of 773,277. For the decade they covered only 13,008,000 seats with fans in them. The Expos never saw a postseason game in the 1990s. The franchise moved to Washington to become the Nationals and immediately drew almost three million fans in their first season, even finishing with a 81-81 record.

88. Tripleheader games began in the 1880s when three games were played against the same team in one day. In which season was the last and final tripleheader game ever played?

From Quiz Dave's Dungeon of Baseball 2

Answer: 1920

There was only one tripleheader game ever played in the 20th Century. The game occurred on October 2, 1920, with the Pittsburgh Pirates hosting the Cincinnati Reds with two days left in the season. The tripleheader was played due to rain-outs. The teams were playing for finishing position money only at that point. The Reds finished in third place 10.5 games behind the National League pennant-winning Brooklyn Robins, while Pittsburgh finished in fourth place trailing the Robins by 14 games. The Reds won two of the three games. Due to player collective bargaining rules established after the 1920 season, it was stated that there will never be another tripleheader game played. Ever since the 1920 season, seasons have been extended and played to avoid all tripleheader games.

89. The great Yankee Lou Gehrig was the first player in history to have his number retired in 1939. Which National Leaguer was honored for being the first in his league to have his number retired?

From Quiz CPR Baseball

Answer: Willard Hershberger

The Cincinnati Reds retired the catcher's number 5 after he spent all three seasons of his career with them from 1938-1940. He was killed under mysterious circumstances in August 1940, then the Reds retired his number in honor of him. In 1942 it was finally deemed by police and investigators that Hershberger had committed suicide. The Reds then re-activated the number 5. Johnny Bench wore the number during his storied career with the 'Big Red Machine'.

90. The National League started their endeavors in the 1870s with eight teams. By the end of its second season, how many of those eight inaugural teams were still playing in the league?

From Quiz Dave's Diamond Hardball

Answer: 3

The eight initial teams (in order of their 1876 inaugural season finish) were the Chicago White Stockings, Hartford Dark Blues, St. Louis Browns, Boston Red Stockings, Louisville Grays, New York Mutuals, Philadelphia Athletics, and Cincinnati Reds. New York and Philadelphia folded by the end of the first season in 1876. Hartford, Louisville, and St. Louis shutdown at the end of the second season leaving the league with the three initial teams. In 1878, the Indianapolis Blues, Providence Grays, and the Milwaukee Grays joined the league and that season was played with only six teams.
