Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where should you go if you wanted to see a quagga?

Answer: A museum or library

The quagga was a species of zebra that went extinct around the 19th century. It made its home in the southern regions of Africa and was easy to distinguish because it was striped only on the front half of its body. Also, the quagga had stripes were dark brown, not black like most other species of zebra.

The quagga had a thicker coat than most zebra and was known to shed it once a year. The field of genetics is attempting to breed back the quagga using genetic material that is available from the pelts of quaggas that have been deceased for decades.

But until they are successful, the only place to see a quagga today is in a book or a museum.
2. When Europeans first saw the quokka, they mistook it for which other kind of animal?

Answer: Rat

The European sailors thought that the quokka was a type of rat when they first saw it on Rottnest Island. The name of the island itself came from the Dutch for "rat nest". Quokkas are numerous on some of the outlying islands of Australia, but anywhere where there are dingos, foxes, or dogs, quokkas have been killed off.

These friendly Australian marsupials show very little fear of humans or introduced species.
3. What is the name of this little marsupial, found only in New Guinea and Australia?

Answer: Quoll

The quoll is a small- to medium-sized marsupial that has nocturnal habits and enjoys basking in the sun while sleeping during the day. The quoll is an omnivore but is known for the large amount of meat it eats. Other than man, the main predator of the quoll is crocodiles and large snakes.

Although, they are usually seen on the ground, the quoll is a very adept climber and is sometimes observed supplementing its diet with fruit and seeds obtained in this matter.
4. What is the term for an animal that is the result of the mating between a zebra and a donkey?

Answer: Zedonk

All of these options are a type of zebroid. They are the result of a zebra stallion mating with a female horse or mule or other equine. This does happen in the wild, but VERY rarely. Most zebroids are the result of deliberate breeding. These hybrids are always infertile and will often display various forms of dwarfism. No two zebroids are exactly alike and are often shown as curiosities by zoos and other animal shows.

There are instances of a male horse mating with a female zebra, but these are extremely rare.
5. The unusual mammal known as a zebra duiker is which type of animal?

Answer: Antelope

The zebra duiker is a small, striped antelope that is found in Liberia and Guinea. They are usually seen in lowland forest areas, but are found in any area where leaves and grass are abundant. Because of their size, the zebra duiker is often dependent on larger mammals to accidentally drop fruit and other edibles treats from trees in the area.
6. The Sherpa people of Nepal call a female yak which of the following things?

Answer: Nak

The yak is one of the most unique mammals on the planet. They live in some of the highest altitudes of any mammal on the planet. There are both wild and domestic yak. Domestic yak are used for wool, milk, meat, and dung. They are also used as draught animals. The Sherpas of Nepal call females of this species "Nak" or sometimes "Dri".
7. There is a superorder of mammals known as Xenarthra which includes sloths, armadillos and anteaters.

Answer: True

This statement is true. Xenarthra are an ancient group of insectivores and/or herbivores of small to medium body size. Today, only one of these mammals, the armadillo, still survives in North America. The others are all found in Central and South America. In the past, the ancestors of these present-day animals were much larger and much more diverse.
8. A zebu is a type of domestic cattle that is found in southern areas of Asia.

Answer: True

The zebu is a species of cattle that has adapted to the suffocating weather found in the tropics. The zebu has a distinctive hump on its back behind the head and is possibly related to the extinct auroch. The zebu is sometimes interbred with other types of domestic cattle in order to breed strong babies. They are used as milk cows, meat cows, and as draft animals.
9. Most zebras live in which part of the world?

Answer: Southern Africa

Zebras are a social mammal that lives in large herds. The herds, combined with their distinctive stripes is thought to be a form of camouflage and protection for predators, both large and small. The huge herds you may see on television, are actually groups of small herds of females, led by an alpha male. Even when in the company of thousands of other zebras, the small family groups stay together.
10. What is the country of origin of the dog breed known as a xoloitzcuintli?

Answer: Mexico

The xoloitzcuintli, also known as a xolo or Mexican Hairless, is a loveable small to midsize breed that is thought to have originated with the Aztecs in Mexico. They are one of the oldest and rarest breeds, and require an experienced owner. The xolo is easy to housetrain and are one of the longest living breeds, and most live until 15-20 years of age.

They need to be protected from cold temperatures and long periods of time in the sun.
