1. Three of these were born in 1947. Which one of the four is younger than the others?

Answer: Sting

Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner CBE was born in Wallsend, North Tyneside in October 1951, making him more than four years younger than the other four. Known simply as Sting, he was the lead singer and bassist with The Police. He won his first Grammy in 1981. The oldest of this foursome is Pauline Matthews, aka Kiki Dee, who was born in Bradford on March 6, 1947.

Her only #1 single in both the UK and US came in partnership with the man born just 19 days after her, Elton John. Born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on the outskirts of London, 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart' was also Elton John's first UK #1 despite numerous earlier near misses.

The third alternative, Queen guitarist Brian May, born in July 1947, also comes from the London suburbs.

Answer: Nina Simone

Eunice Kathleen Waymon was born in North Carolina in February 1933, which means that Nina Simone is more than five years older than the other three. Known as 'The High Priestess of Soul', she can also be classified as a jazz, R&B, gospel, folk or blues singer.

She died in 2003 aged 70. The youngest of this quartet is Raymond Edward Cochran, born in Albert Lea MN in October 1938. Eddie Cochran is an important figure in the early days of rock despite his death at the age of just 21, in a car crash where he was a passenger in a taxi. Soul singer Benjamin Earl King was born just five days before Cochran, in Harlem, New York City.

He was a 60s star both as a solo artist and as a member of The Drifters. Phil Everly, born in Chicago in January 1939 was the younger of the Everly Brothers by almost two years.

The youngster here is Sheryl Crow, born in Kennett MO in February 1962, making her more more than three and a half years younger than the alternatives. She won her first Grammies, for 'Best New Artist', 'Best Record' and 'Best Pop Female Vocalist' in 1994.

The oldest of this foursome is Prince Rogers Nelson, born in Minneapolis in June 1958. Kate Bush was born in Kent in July, and Madonna Louise Ciccone in Bay City MI in August.

Robert Nesta Marley was born in Saint Ann, Jamaica in February 1945, so he is more than five years senior to the other three. Still considered 'Mr Reggae', Marley died of cancer in Miami in 1981 aged just 36. He had been flying back to Jamaica from a European tour but did not make it. Singer and drummer Karen Carpenter, died even younger than Marley -- aged 32.

Mel C is the oldest of this quartet, born in Merseyside in January 1975.

Her solo sales exceed those of the other Spice Girls combined. She has co-written more UK #1 singles than any other female writer, and trails only Lennon and McCartney amongst all co-writers in that category. Singer Charles Aznevour was born a month later in Paris, France. All four had long careers and lived well into their 80s.

She was also the only one of the four still alive at the turn of the 20th Century. Jerome John Garcia, vocalist and lead guitarist of cult band The Grateful Dead, was born in San Francisco CA in August 1942.

He died in 1995 aged 53. Jimi Hendrix, one of the greatest of all guitarists, was born in Seattle WA in November 1942. He died aged just 27 in London in 1970.
