Oprah was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi on January 29 1954. The town is one of the oldest remaining settlements on the Natchez Trail. It derives its name from the Polish general, Tadeusz Koscuisko who bravely took part in the Revolutionary War. Oprah spent the first six years of her life living here in poverty with her grandmother in a house without indoor plumbing.

It has been reported that Oprah didn't receive her first pair of shoes until she was six years old.
