Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Betty Boop, whose career as a cartoon character started in 1930 and who was known for singing "I Wanna be Loved By You...", appeared in what Oscar winning movie after a 50-year absence from the screen?

Answer: Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988)

Betty Boop, who was originally inspired by the It-Girl actress, Clara Bow, did indeed make an appearance in 1988's "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", which brought together many cartoon characters who hadn't shared the screen before in a wonderful mixture of live action and animation.

2. Which fashion style became popular in the 1920s embracing the liberation of women and featured short, sleek hair and loose-fitted shift dresses?

Answer: Flapper

The flapper - a term for women and style of fashion they wore - rose to prominence in the Jazz Age of the United States and lasted from the mid-1920s to the Great Depression of 1929. It also marked the height of women's suffrage and most women were ready to make social statements.

The fashion for these liberal women often included short bob hair styles worn with cloche hats and shapeless dresses that had lower waistlines and higher hemlines.

3. Who is the better known cousin of the cartoon character Slowpoke Rodriguez?

Answer: Speedy Gonzales

Both characters belong to the popular Looney Tunes franchise. While Speedy Gonzales was dubbed the 'fastest mouse in all Mexico', his cousin, Slowpoke Rodriguez, lived up to his name and was the 'slowest mouse in all Mexico'. Slowpoke is the lesser known cousin having appeared in only two of the Speedy Gonzales cartoons.

6. Billy Thompson, of the British adult comic 'Viz', is the piscatorial goalkeeper for Fulchester United. What is the name of this comic strip?

Answer: Billy the Fish

'Billy the Fish' has been in Viz since 1983. It used to be drawn by artist Chris Donald and written by Simon Thorp, but later Thorp drew and wrote it. Billy was born half man/half fish and is portrayed as a head (with mullet hairstyle!) with a tail and fins, that hovers over the ground at head height (what else?) An animated cartoon was made of the cartoon strip by Channel 4 in 1990. Billy the Kid was an outlaw of the Wild West, Billy Connolly a comedian/actor and Billy Idol a singer.

7. In later Super Mario games, Princess Toadstool became known by which name (also the name of a fuzzy, pitted fruit)?

Answer: Peach

Princess Toadstool, as she was known, appeared in the "Mario" series since the early days on the NES (with "Super Mario Bros."). By the time "Super Mario 64" rolled around in the late 1990s, she shortened her name to 'Peach'. The first instance of this is in the opening sequence of "Super Mario 64" in which she invites Mario to her castle for a cake. Peach tends to get in trouble an awful lot as she gets captured by Mario's foes (Bowser or otherwise). On occasion, players can use her character in-game to drive karts, play tennis, or participate in party games.

8. Which of these fictional sleuths began on television rather than in books?

Answer: J.B. Fletcher

Although several books have been written featuring Jessica Beatrice MacGill Fletcher, she is the creation of Peter S. Fischer, Richard Levinson, and William Link for the American crime drama "Murder, She Wrote" (1984-1996). Schoolteacher-turned-mystery-writer J.B. Fletcher of Cabot Cove, Maine, was played by the incomparable veteran British-American actress Angela Lansbury. "Murder, She Wrote" was one of the most successful and longest-running television shows of all time and a staple of the CBS Sunday night line-up. Four episodes were novelized in the mid-1980s, and a series of spin-off books (credited as "by Jessica Fletcher and...") were published beginning in 1989.

The book series has been successful long past the TV series, and Terrie Farley Moran took over that series in 2021.

A board game was released in 1985, as well as a couple of video games for MacOS and Windows systems in 2009 and 2012.

9. In the radio version, the announcer asked "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?" and concluded the show by saying "The weed of crime bears bitter fruit! Crime does not pay." Name the character after whom the show was named.

Answer: The Shadow

Lamont Cranston had the ability to "cloud men's minds" hypnotically so as to seem invisible. He used this art to detect, solve and prevent crimes. The series was heard on the radio (1937-1954) most famously with Orson Welles voicing The Shadow. "The Shadow" Magazine was first published in 1931. Shadow short-subjects were filmed in the '30s, feature length movies in the '40s and a modern feature with Alec Baldwin starring in 1994.

A television series appeared in 1954 but did not last.

10. What is the longest-running live radio variety program, usually transmitted from St. Paul, Minnesota, to be broadcast in two centuries (20th & 21st)?

Answer: A Prairie Home Companion

'A Prairie Home Companion' began in 1974, went on hiatus from 1987 to 1989, and then returned as a somewhat different program called American Radio Company until 1992, when it completely reverted to the old format and name. Nothing on the air in the USA today compares to this phenomenal show.
