Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Two bears have leading roles in the web based comic "Achewood". Name the bear that is well respected, is usually seen wearing his dressing gown and is a children's book author?

Answer: Cornelius Bear

"Achewood" is a web based comic strip.

"Cornelius" is also called "Mr Bear" and lives in Achewood Court.
"Teodor Orezacu" is the second bear, a Belarus teddy bear, in the comic.
"Butterbear" is a half bear, half butterfly creature from "The Wuzzles".
"Vincent" appears in "Over the Hedge" (Dreamworks, 2000).
2. "Wocka, Wocka, Wocka" is the signature line of which bear?

Answer: Fozzie Bear

"Fozzie Bear" is featured on "The Muppet Show" and delivers terrible jokes. These are usually followed by the aforementioned "signature line".
His mother, Emily, is one of his biggest critics, as are Statler and Waldorf.
3. The "Care Bears" originated from greeting cards.

Answer: True

The "Care Bears" are a creation of "American Greetings", and they first appeared in 1981.

In 1983, they were turned into a range of teddy bears and were given their own television show and, in 1985, began a series of movies.
4. Which of the following bears became the cover star of "The Beano" comic strip in 1948?

Answer: Biffo The Bear

Launched in 1938 "The Beano", was aimed at, predominantly, young children. Its most notable character introduction was "Dennis the Menace".

Biffo's approach to life is like that of a child with a style of humour to match.
The "Rupert Bear stories were created by Mary Tourtel.

"Bobo" is a teddy bear that belongs to Mr Burns from "The Simpsons".
"Baloo" is a sloth bear from Rudyard Kipling's "The Jungle Book".
5. Which of the following bears had a series of adventures in the "Magic Forest", an Australian children's television programme?

Answer: Humphrey B Bear

'Humphrey ' B Bear was originally called 'Bear Bear'. He wears a waist-coat, a hat and a large bow-tie. Gasp, horror ... he doesn't wear trousers.

"Basil the Bear" appears on "Sesame Park", which is a Canadian version of "Sesame Street".

"Bobo The Bear" (not Mr Burns' teddy bear) appears on "The Muppet Show Tonight".
"Buttons The Bear" appears on the Canadian Comedy series "Puppets Who Kill".

As a footnote, the Disney studios created a bear called "Humphrey Bear" who lives in Brownstone National Park and is a constant pain to "Donald Duck".
6. Walter (Walt) Kelly, in his comic strip "Pogo", created a bear that is described as a "flamboyant circus operator", which one of the following bears is he?

Answer: P.T. Bridgeport

Walter Kelly uses the bear as a satirical tool in his strip and named after PT Barnum, the circus operator. Barnum was also a resident of Kelly's hometown.

"Curtis-E-Bear" is a mascot for a road rage class in an episode of "The Simpsons" entitled "Screaming Yellow Honkers". "Bongo" is a circus bear who appeared in the Disney Studio's "Fun and Fancy Free" (1947). "Shako" is a killer polar bear from the comic strip "2000 AD".
7. Which character in Disney's 1973 animated feature, "Robin Hood", is portrayed as a bear?

Answer: Little John

Little John was voiced by Phil Harris, a noted singer, songwriter and jazz musician. Robin Hood is portrayed as a fox, Friar Tuck as a badger and Alan-a-Dale as a rooster.
8. One of the stage directions in William Shakespeare's play "A Winter's Tale" is "Exit, pursued by a bear".

Answer: True

The stage direction is used as a tool to portray the death of Antigonus.
A sheet would be drawn across the stage and the action seen in relief (shadow). This, then, raised the question - was a "real" bear used? Still a moot point but it is worth remembering that "bear-baiting" was not uncommon in Shakespeare's day.
9. "Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires" is a long running public service campaign in the USA. Who is the bear that is the face of this campaign?

Answer: Smokey Bear

Technically, there is no "the" in Smokey's name. Jack Rollins and Steve Nelson incorporated the extra word in 1952, when they released their song "Smokey The Bear".
10. Which bear insists that he is "Smarter than the average bear"?

Answer: Yogi Bear

"Yogi Bear" speaks in rhymes. He loves "pic-a-nic" baskets, has a girlfriend called "Cindy" and a best mate named "Boo-Boo". Baseballer Yogi Berra is considered the inspiration for his name.

My apologies to fans of bears such as "Rupert Bear", "Sooty", "Paddington Bear" and a whole host of others...perhaps there may be a sequel.

Thank you to all who have played this quiz and I would welcome your thoughts.
