1. Ancient Greece was made up of city-states. Which of the following were city-states of ancient Greece?

Answer: All of these.

Trading centres arose when villages joined together; these areas became city-states. City-states each had their own type of government. Some were ruled by elected groups of men. Other city-states had kings in charge. Athens, Sparta and Corinth were among the most powerful city-states of ancient Greece.
2. What best describes a citizen of Athens?

Answer: A grown man who was not a slave and lived in Athens..

In Athens, men who were not slaves were citizens. They could vote for or against new laws and could speak at the Assembly.
3. What was the Assembly?

Answer: An open air meeting where citizens could vote.

Citizens who spoke at the Assembly were timed with a water clock. When the last drop had dripped from the jar, they had to sit down and be quiet.
4. The Greek army was very fierce, especially the Spartans. Who paid for their weapons and armour?

Answer: The soldiers bought their own.

A wealthy soldier would be able to equip himself with good armour, a sword and a spear. A poor soldier had to make do with whatever he could find, this could be just an animal skin and a wooden club.
5. The biggest Greek warships had three rows of oarsmen. What were these ships called?

Answer: Triremes

A trireme had 170 oarsmen and was equipped with a ram at the front to make holes in enemy ships. Each ship had a flute player and the oarsmen would pull in time to the music.

7. Why did the Greeks build temples?

Answer: As homes for their gods.

The temples were built using the finest materials so that the gods would be pleased. One of the most famous Greek temples was built using white marble.
8. Who went to the gym every day?

Answer: Boys - it was a school.

Only Greek boys went to school, girls were not allowed. 'Gym' is short for 'gymnasium'. Men also went to the gym, but women did not.
9. Why did Greek farmers beat their trees?

Answer: To harvest ripe olives.

Farmers would spread sheets under the olive trees and then beat the branches. This was much easier than climbing up to pick them one by one.
10. What did the Greeks use tortoises for?

Answer: To make musical instruments.

An empty tortoise shell was used to make an instrument rather like a small harp, called a lyre. Roman soldiers used their shields to make a "tortoise" formation to protect themselves.
