Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. LB&SCR E2 class tank engine---Number 1---Blue

Answer: Thomas

The star of the show, Thomas, is an LB&SCR E2 class tank engine who arrived on the island of Sodor in 1915. It is said that a wartime mistake led to his arrival - he was slated to go to southern England, and instead ended up on the island - and his driver and fireman decided to stay there! After proving himself capable, Thomas was given charge of his own line, the Ffarquhar Branch Line; he is pictured as being kind; however, he loves to tease the other engines.
2. Furness Railway K2 mixed-traffic engine---Number 2---Blue

Answer: Edward

Edward is the oldest engine on the North Western Railway; in fact, he helped to build it! Even though the younger engines tease him about his age, and point out that he is a bit clunky and obsolete, Edward always proves that his wisdom and perseverance help things go a bit more smoothly. He runs his own branch line with BoCo, a mixed traffic diesel engine.
3. L&YR Class 28 engine---Number 5---Red

Answer: James

James is a mixed traffic engine, and was black when he was purchased by the Fat Controller to work on the island of Sodor. He was repainted red after an accident, and was also fitted with better brakes and a new tender for hauling coal. After that, he tended to be a bit vain and didn't want to pull trucks - only coaches! He has found that sometimes he needs the help of other engines to whom he hasn't been very kind.
4. 0-4-0 saddle tank engine---Number 6---Green

Answer: Percy

Percy was purchased by the Fat Controller to work on Sodor when some of the other engines went on strike to protest about the extra work they had to do. Percy loves to tease, and sometimes seems to be prone to accidents, especially when one of his jokes backfires! One of Thomas's best friends, Percy's stories teach that it is important to learn from one's mistakes.
5. GER C53 steam tram---Number 7----Brown

Answer: Toby

Toby, one of Thomas's best friends, came to work at the quarry on Thomas's line after his tramway in East Anglia closed in 1951. Built in London in 1914, he is one of the oldest trains, but is wise in spite of the perceived weakness due to his age. He is experienced enough to run the line when Thomas has to be away, and has the help of his own coaches, Henrietta and Victoria, as well as a luggage van named Elsie.
6. GNR G3 Stirling Single---Tender---Dark Green

Answer: Emily

While Emily can be a bit bossy, she is also kind and considerate. One of the newest members of the fleet, she made some mistakes - like taking Annie and Clarabel, Thomas's coaches, without his permission - but, after saving Thomas and Oliver from an accident at the cross-points, proved herself worthy of having her own coaches.

By the way, Emily speaks with a Scottish accent and pulls a tender.
7. Pannier tank engine "Montague"---Number 8---Green

Answer: Duck

Duck's real name is "Montague"; he earned Duck as a nickname because it is said that he waddles! Duck worked at Paddington for Great Western Railway before he moved to Sodor, and tends to think that the "Great Western way" is the best way. He is a very hard worker, and earned his own branch line between Tidmouth and Arlesburgh.
8. Tank engine---Number 37---Faded cherry red and lavender

Answer: Rosie

Rosie works as either a mixed traffic or shunting engine, which means that she either works hauling passengers and freight or helps sorts items into complete trains. Rosie really likes Thomas, and is described as being a friendly and respectful tomboy.
9. Japanese steam engine---Number 51---Black with red wheels

Answer: Hiro

Hiro, also known as the "Master of the Railway", came to Sodor after leaving Japan, where he was considered to be one of the strongest engines on the railway. On Sodor it was difficult to find parts to keep Hiro working. Even though he was eventually restored there, Hiro returned to his homeland because he was homesick.

He was still on loan to the Fat Controller, and has since come back to Sodor to help with the summer holiday traffic.
10. Type 4B Wickham Trolley---Track inspection vehicle---Red

Answer: Winston

Sir Topham Hatt, also known as the Fat Controller, drives Winston when he inspects the train tracks. He is a terrible driver, and Winston must always be on the lookout to make sure that Sir Topham Hatt's driving does not interfere with the tasks that the engines are completing.

A loyal companion, Winston also makes sure that the Fat Controller's poor driving skills are not noticed by others.
