Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This cat can be found at high altitudes up to 18,000 feet in Tibet, China and in the Himalayas.

Answer: Snow leopard

The snow leopard (Panthera uncia) is well suited for life at high altitudes. It has thick grey/white fur which helps for camouflage in mountainous terrain. The tail is its most distinctive feature. It is long, thick and helps with balance. Their main prey are Himalayan blue sheep, musk deer, ibex, boar and domestic livestock.
2. This cat can be identified by a pattern of irregular patches along its back as well as stripes and spots over its body.

Answer: Clouded leopard

The clouded leopard (Neofilis nebulosa) can be found in tropical rain forests up to 6500 feet as well as swamps and grasslands. It is closely related to the snow leopard and has a diet of deer, wild pigs, monkeys and small rodents.
3. This is the largest living cat.

Answer: Siberian Tiger

The Siberian or Amur Tiger (Panthera tigris) can be found in rocky mountain forests in Russia (especially Siberia), North Korea and Manchuria. They will eat almost any animal they can hunt down including deer, antelope, pigs, bears, moose and fish. In the wild, they can survive 10-15 years.
4. This big cat is the fastest land animal.

Answer: Cheetah

The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) can reach speeds of up to 70 miles per hour over short distances. It can also hunt at speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. Unfortunately, it cannot run at these speeds for more than a minute as it would put too much pressure on its heart. It is the only big cat that does not have retractable claws.
5. This solitary cat was hunted for its fur in Russia and China.

Answer: Pallas cat

The Pallas cat (Octocolobus manui) was named after Peter Simon Pallas a Prussian explorer who discovered it in 1776 on an expedition travelling across Russia.
It is about the size of a domestic cat with flattened facial features. It hunts rodents and small game birds.
6. This cat can be found all over North America. A group of them is known as a clowder or clutter.

Answer: Bobcat

The bobcat (Lynux rufus) is also known as a wildcat and is a relative of the Canadian lynx. It is nocturnal and has a diet consisting of rabbits, rodents, birds and domestic animals including dogs and cats.
7. Unfortunately, this is a critically endangered big cat. It has a pale colored coat which helps it hide in snowy conditions.

Answer: Amur leopard

The Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis) is the most endangered leopard species in the world due to a loss of habitat. Less than 80 of these proud animals exist in the wild. They can be found on the Russia/China border and are well suited for the harsh terrain due to their thick fur which protects them from the cold. Their diet includes deer, wild boar, small mammals and birds.
8. This is the third largest cat species.

Answer: Jaguar

The jaguar (Panthera onca) closely resembles the leopard; however, unlike the leopard, it has spots in its rosettes which are used for camouflage. The black panther is a jaguar with black pigment all over its body, although, upon closer examination, rosette patterns can still be seen.
9. This cat is recognized by tufts of hair on its ears and a short bobbed tail. It also has a mane of fur around its face.

Answer: Siberian lynx

The Siberian or Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) has thick fur which is ideal for its habitat in the cold parts of Russia, Mongolia and China. They have wide webbed paws which work like snowshoes. Their diet consists of rabbits, rodents, deer, fish and birds.
10. Which big cat is sometimes called "The King of the Jungle"?

Answer: Lion

The lion (Panthera leo) is one of the most identified animals around the world. The male lion is easily differentiated from the female lioness by his large shaggy mane. It is the second largest cat after the tiger. It is mainly found in grasslands and forests in Africa where they survive on a diet of buffalo, giraffe, antelope and wildebeest.
