Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There is a famous poem called "Fog". Mark Twain asks "What kind of animal is a frog?".

Answer: amphibian

Carl Sandberg (1878-1967) is a famous American poet and writer. His poem "Fog" goes like this.

"The fog comes on little cat feet.
It sits looking over harbor and city,
On silent haunches and then moves on."

Fog and frog can be connected by poetry and as creations of nature.
2. Mark Twain asks "How does a frog move about?"

Answer: jumps

Mark Twain (1835-1910) is a famous American writer. He wrote a famous short story called "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County". So far, we have learned that a frog jumps.
3. Mark Twain asks "What does a frog use to jump about?"

Answer: big webbed feet

So now we know that a frog jumps on big webbed feet. Samuel Langhorne Clemens used the pen name of Mark Twain. Carl Sandberg says fog moves on little cat feet.
4. Carl Sandberg says the fog can sit. Mark Twain says a frog can do the same thing. Is Mr. Twain right?

Answer: Yes

One way for a frog to rest or to be still is to sit. Frogs have many interesting characteristics such a big, bulging eyes and long, sticky tongues.
5. Carl Sandberg says that the fog sits looking over a harbor and a city. Mark Twain asks, "What would a frog most likely be looking over?"

Answer: a pond

By this time, we have learned that a frog jumps on big webbed feet and sometimes it sits and looks around. A pond is a small inland pool of water. A harbor is a large body of water where ships or boats can anchor.
6. Mark Twain asks, "What is an essential element for frogs?"

Answer: water

Although frogs can stay on land, they are mainly aquatic, living in or close to water. Their cousins, toads, are more suited to land; even hot, dry areas.
7. This item is very familiar to frogs. Mark Twain asks, "What is a lilypad?"

Answer: a water plant

This broad-leaf water plant floats on top of pond water. Frogs use this plant like a small island to sit and rest on.
8. Mark Twain asks, "What color of skin do most people associate with frogs?"

Answer: green

All frogs are not green. They come in many different colors.
9. Some people like to eat frog legs. Mark Twain says that the upper thighs of a frog's legs are called haunches. Is that so?

Answer: Yes

Frogs have big, strong haunches with which to jump and to sit on. Carl Sandberg says fogs have silent haunches, which is a type of literary licence.
10. Mark Twain asks, "What do frogs eat?"

Answer: meat

Frogs are carnivores which means they eat meat such as insects, small snakes, mice, baby turtles, and other smaller frogs. The Mark Twain lesson on this fun critter is done. If Carl Sandberg had not written the poem "Fog", then maybe Mark Twain would have written a poem called "Frog". It might have gone like this.

"A frog jumps on big webbed feet.
It sits looking over lilypad and water,
On both green haunches, and then hops on."

You be the judge of which poem you like better, "Fog" or "Frog".
