Roonil Wazlib Trivia Quiz

The title comes from an Author Challenge. Since it can only refer to the wrock band or to Ron Weasley, I opted for a Ron quiz (if you want the other one, write it yourself). All the questions are about "The Half-Blood Prince".

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Obviously, "Roonil Wazlib" is rather different from the normal spelling of Ron's name. Why?

Answer: He wrote it with one of Fred and George's Spell-Checking quills, and the charm wore off

The first appearance of our friend Roonil is in a DADA essay, where the quill also makes "belligerent" start with "B-U-M", and "augury" with "O-R-G". The backfired spell idea is based on the incident in "The Chamber of Secrets", where Ron tries to hex Malfoy, but his malfunctioning wand has him burping slugs for hours.

As for the Hagrid one... Well, Hagrid does like his ale. There is no evidence of Lavender Brown being dyslexic.
2. "Once again, you show all the sensitivity of a blunt axe". Who told Ron that at the opening feast at Hogwarts? Hint: Note the implement in question.

Answer: Nearly Headless Nick

This does have a bit of a Hermione ring to it, and quite possibly Ginny might have expressed herself in a similar vein. However, it happens after Nick says he would die rather than betray Harry's trust. Ron points out that Nick is already dead, which is true, but not something Nick likes to touch on. And having been executed by 45 hacks with a blunt axe, Nick's choice of words is perhaps understandable.
3. In the first Potions lesson with Slughorn, the class is making the Draught of Living Death. It's supposed to be a clear pink. How does Ron's turn out?

Answer: A tarlike substance, looking like liquid licorice

The purple one is Hermione's, and it is quite acceptable for a first try. Harry, following the Half-Blood Prince's instructions, gets it just right, while Ron's is less succesful. Quite likely somebody in the class made a muddy brown potion, too. The Draught is a very powerful sleeping potion, which sends you into a deep sleep that makes you seem dead.
4. When Ron tried out for Keeper on the Quidditch team, he saved five out of five penalties. Cormac McLaggen saved four, but he claimed there was cheating involved with Ron. What did McLaggen say happened?

Answer: One of the penalties was shot by Ginny, and she gave Ron an easy save

Harry dismisses Cormac's protest, saying that Ginny's shot was the one Ron almost missed. The interference allegation would have been true, but at the time, only the perpetrator, one Miss Granger, knew about it. And while Ron is not always the model of rectitude, bullying and bribing is not his style. Especially not bribing, since he's never owned anything that could serve as a bribe
5. During a visit to Hogsmeade, Hermione catches Ron staring at who or what?

Answer: Madam Rosmerta

Ron thinks Rosmerta is very pretty (she is, too), even though she is more than old enough to be his mother. Hermione, as usual, is correct in her suspicions. Rosmerta is the landlady at the Three Broomsticks, and in the course of the story she is put under the Imperius curse, with near-disastrous results for both Katie Bell and Ron.
6. Ron gets into a shouting match with another Gryffindor of his (close) aquaintance, and ends up firing a spell at her, before Harry can calm him down a bit. Who is it? Hint: Kissing is involved.

Answer: Ginny

It happens right after Quidditch practice, when Harry and Ron come across Ginny and Dean Thomas in a corridor, engaging in vigorous kissing. What with Ron's old-fashioned ideas of propriety, and him and Ginny both having hot tempers, things get out of hand. McGonagall, as Head of the house, is a Gryffindor, but she is hardly the type to go about kissing people in corridors.
7. Returning to Hogwarts after Christmas, Ron is greeted by Lavender Brown, who gleefully calls out what?

Answer: Won-Won!

This is one of several examples of exaggerated displays of affection between them. Another one is the "My Sweetheart" necklace that Lavender gives Ron for Christmas, and there are more incidents, too. Lavender appears genuinely keen on Ron, whereas he seems only to want a girlfriend. Or maybe he hasn't figured out yet that he really wants Hermione. Or it could just be the mysterious nature of teenagers and their hormones. Your opinion is as good as mine.
8. Ron gets poisoned and has to stay in the hospital wing for some time. As he is leaving, he receives a green onion-like thing from Luna Lovegood. What is it?

Answer: A Gurdyroot

Harry is leaving the hospital wing at the same time, and Luna's business is to give him a message from Dumbledore. She is carrying a number of strange plants, for her own reasons (no doubt peculiar ones). She tells Ron to keep the Gurdyroot, as she has plenty already. It's supposed to be good for keeping away Gulping Plimpies, whatever they might be.
9. Ron told Harry and Hermione that he wanted to break up with Lavender, but whenever he hinted about it, she only held on tighter. According to Ron, it was like going out with what or who?

Answer: The Giant Squid

At this point, it's fairly obvious that neither Ron nor Lavender really has any faith in the future of their relationship. The Giant Squid lives in the lake in the grounds, and does not seem to be dangerous. We never get to meet a hag in any of the stories, although in "The Prisoner of Azkaban", Harry thinks he sees one during his time in the Leaky Cauldron and Diagon Alley just before the start of the school year.
10. After Dumbledore's funeral, Ron wanted to hit his brother Percy. Why?

Answer: Because it would make him feel better

Although Hermione once, and famously, punched Draco Malfoy, she is more her usual cool self here, despite the very sad circumstances. Thus, she would never encourage Ron to hit his brother, even though Percy may well have deserved it. Percy was attending the funeral, but at the time, he was still at odds with his family.
