Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Detective Brown starts her investigation into Dr Black's death in the dining room. Mrs White is sat at the table, clutching a soup SNOOP.

Answer: spoon

Snoop is another word for investigate. It usually refers to a secretive investigation rather than official investigations carried out by the police.

Unsurprisingly, a soup spoon is a spoon specially designed for eating soup! They are often round and slightly deeper than the spoon you'd use to eat your cereal.

In North America, the board game 'Cluedo' is called 'Clue' and the murder victim is called Mr Boddy.
2. Mrs Peacock is lounging in the lounge. She is sitting next to a large, ruby coloured SAVE containing a beautiful bouquet of flowers.

Answer: vase

Ruby is both a shade of red and the name for a precious stone made of red corundum. Sapphires are also made of corundum, but tend to be blue.

The ruby vase has an ugly crack down one side, and the flowers it is holding are beginning to wilt because all the water has leaked out. Perhaps this was the murder weapon?
3. The hallway of the mansion was gloomy, lit only by a single LANCED flickering in a holder on the hall table.

Answer: candle

Candles were the main way that houses were lit before electric lights became widely available in the early 20th century.

If something is 'lanced' then it has been pierced with a sharp object.

The dark hallway could have been an ideal place for the unknown murderer to attack Dr Black, but his body was actually found at the bottom of the cellar stairs. In 'Cluedo' the cellar is the room in the centre of the board that contains the envelope holding the solution to the mystery.
4. There is nobody in the study, but Detective Brown sees a bright red LIFE lying open on the desk. It looks like someone has stolen the papers that were inside it.

Answer: file

The word 'file' has several meanings. When used as a noun it can be a folder or box that contains papers, or a tool used to smooth something down - like your fingernails. As a verb it can mean walking one behind another in a line.
5. Detective Brown moves on to the library, where she finds Reverend Green reading a book that he found on the FLESH behind him.

Answer: shelf

Shelves are flat surfaces on which items like books can be placed. They can either be wall-mounted or part of a piece of furniture such as a bookcase. Libraries are always full of bookshelves!

Reverend Green is so interested in his book that he hasn't even realised that a murder has taken place in the mansion!
6. In the billiard room Detective Brown sees a very big BLEAT, but decides that it couldn't possibly be the murder weapon.

Answer: table

A bleat is a sound made by an animal such as a sheep or a goat.

Billiards refers to several games that are all played by using a long stick, or 'cue', to move balls around a large table. Well known examples include pool and snooker.
7. Dr Black's conservatory is full of exotic plants, including an ONAGER tree covered in colourful fruit.

Answer: orange

An onager is a member of the horse family. They look a lot like donkeys and are native to the Middle East and central Asia.

Orange trees grow best in warm climates with lots of sunshine but they can be grown indoors in colder countries.
8. The ballroom is empty, but a pair of red high-heeled HOSES has been left lying beside the dance floor.

Answer: shoes

Ballrooms are often one of the grandest rooms in a mansion, with plenty of open space for a large dance floor. Balls are formal parties where dancing is the main entertainment, and were particularly popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. If you tried to play football in a ballroom you would be very unpopular!

Perhaps the shoes are a clue to the murderer's identity?
9. As Detective Brown enters the kitchen she finds Miss Scarlett desperately scrubbing her hands in the kitchen SKIN.

Answer: sink

The skin is the largest organ of the human body and is responsible for protecting the body from damage or infection, as well as controlling body temperature.

'Everything but the kitchen sink' is a saying that means 'as much as possible'. The kitchen sink represents something impossible to move, probably because it is heavy and has lots of pipes attached!
10. Having toured the whole house, Detective Brown has discovered that the murderer's surname must be CLATTERS. Can you pick him or her out from the list of suspects?

Answer: (Miss) Scarlett

Two of the suspects in 'Cluedo' are given slightly different names in 'Clue'. Miss Scarlett is spelled with only one 't' and Reverend Green is called Mr Green in some versions.

To clatter means to make a loud, rattling noise. Scarlet is shade of bright red, often with a hint of orange.
