Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. '19' is the debut album of British singer Adele and was released in 2008, but can you remember why she named it '19'?

Answer: It was her age at the time she started recording it

Adele named the album '19' after her age at the time of production, as she did similarly with '21', released in early 2011. Some of the more well-known songs on the recording include 'Chasing Pavements', 'Make You Feel My Love' and 'Hometown Glory'. A highly successful album, it has sold millions of copies for Adele and has also topped the UK album charts. Other than a cover of 'Make You Feel My Love' from Bob Dylan, Adele had writing impetus within all of her album songs in '19'.

2. "Three blind mice / Three blind mice." In the nursery rhyme, the visually challenged rodents "all ran after the farmer's wife," but what did she do to them?

Answer: "Cut off their tails with a carving knife"

It isn't clear whether chasing followed cutting or vice versa, but the relationship was not a friendly one. Indeed, the rhyme itself can be used as an attack: it's a popular, if unsportsmanlike, tune for bands to play during professional basketball games, referring to the regulation trio of referees. The referees are not reported to appreciate this.

3. Named after the seven sisters in Greek mythology, the Pleiades are a beautiful star cluster comprised of a certain number of coldly glowing stars. Is it true or is it false that the nine brightest stars in the cluster are named after the seven sisters and their parents in Greek mythology?

Answer: True

The stars' names are: Sterope, Merope, Electra, Maia, Taygeta, Celaeno, and Alcyone, along with father Atlas and mother Pleione. It is the cluster most obvious to the naked eye, and one of the nearest to earth. In the 18th century, they were hypothesised not to be so close together by chance, which ended up being correct, and have been considered as part of the Taurus constellation. The hot blue stars dominate the cluster, giving the cold glow noted within the question subtext.

4. Twentynine - the number makes me think of many things. Okay not really but for argument's sake go with me on this. Of the four choices below, which one is NOT related to the number 29?

Answer: Academy Award nominations earned by Walt Disney

Walt Disney earned 59 Academy Award nominations during the course of his career. The others are all true. We need a leap year every four years because the year is actually 365.25 days long and without it we would lose a day every four years. Copper's atomic number, 29, telling us how many protons it has. Saturn's actual orbit period is 10,759.22 days or 29.4571 years.

5. In the 1999 film "The 13th Warrior", Antonio Banderas starred as an Arab witness to the original events of the "Beowulf" story. What was the title of the Michael Crichton book on which the movie was based?

Answer: Eaters of the Dead

In Crichton's 1976 novel Grendel is really a cannibalistic clan of Neanderthals (called the Wendol) that existentially threaten a Viking settlement. On the advice of a soothsayer, twelve Viking warriors travel far south to seek a thirteenth who is not a Viking. The man they find is Ahmad ibn Fadlan (Banderas in the movie), an exiled courtier who must learn how to be useful in a fight. The movie wasn't very successful critically or financially, but CellarDoor liked it.

6. By what nickname is the number eleven known in the game of bingo?

Answer: Legs

Nicknames for numbers may add an element of fun to bingo tournaments but some do have some meaning behind them. For example: 26 is Bed and Breakfast because the traditional cost for overnight lodgings with breakfast used to be two shillings and sixpence or 2 and 6. Others, however are named because they rhyme well - number five, man alive. Of the other numbers mentioned above Two Fat ladies = 88, Doctor's Orders is 9, named after a laxative and Steps is 39, named after John Buchan's novel "The 39 Steps".

7. "The Number 23" is a 2007 psychological thriller directed by Joel Schumacher. Who played the lead role of Walter Sparrow?

Answer: Jim Carrey

This was Carrey's first lead role in a suspense thriller and his second film with director Schumacher, the first being "Batman Forever" (1995). A series of events lead Sparrow (Carrey) to become obsessed with the number 23 and develops the belief that all events are somehow connected to the number or permutations of it. The film was only moderately successful at the box office and Carrey was nominated for a Golden Raspberry for Worst Actor for his performance.

8. In which of these British TV series, aired between 1967 and 1968, did an agent given the name "Number Six" by his captors endure torture, punishment and trickery in order to obtain his "information", often led by frequently changing chief administrator "Number Two"?

Answer: The Prisoner

Each episode began with 'Number Six' (played by Patrick McGoohan) resigning from his place of work and subsequently being captured and placed in an artificial village, from which the antagonists appear to collect up several people they wish to extract information from.

The question as to who 'Number One' is remains prevalent throughout the story: and each show features a different strategy, rarely successful, employed to extract information from 'Number Six', which have ranged from hallucinogenic drugs, physical beatings, and even the placing of a female who would betray him. 'Number Two' is in charge of getting the required information, whatever it is, and changes regularly, although a couple of them do feature in multiple episodes. Question submitted by malik24

10. The total of the first four prime numbers adds up to the seventh prime number. Which number is this?

Answer: 17

2+3+5+7=17. 17 is actually a pretty special prime number. It forms a twin prime with 19. A twin prime is any prime number that differs from another prime number by only 2. It is also the sixth Mersenne prime exponent, an Eisenstein prime, the third Fermat prime, and the only positive Genocchi number that is prime.
