Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which glam metal band released the albums, "Night Songs" and "Long Cold Winter" in the 1980s?

Answer: Cinderella

"Night Songs" (1986) was the debut album from Philadelphia band Cinderella and reached number three on the Billboard 200 chart in USA as well as producing the hit single, "Nobody's Fool" (1986).
Their follow up album, "Long Cold Winter" (1988) didn't chart as high in USA but still went top ten, as well as bringing the band success in the album charts of many European countries. Hit singles released from this album included "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)" and "Coming Home" (both 1988).
2. In 1913, there were 21 Humpty Dumpties in UK, mainly in the East Anglia area. Although they had reached the end of the line by 1920, they were very popular, but what were they?

Answer: Trains

The Great Eastern Railway Class T19 train had been produced since 1886 and 110 versions of this locomotive, an improvement on the earlier T14, were built, one of which served as the funeral train for Prince Albert Victor, the son of the Prince and Princess of Wales (later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra). In 1902, work began on upgrading many T19s by fitting them with a higher, wider cab, a smaller tender and moving the steam dome to the front of the first boiler hoop, making the train front heavy. For this reason, they were known as Humpty Dumpties and although they were very useful as the engine for long distance passenger trains, they were so front heavy that they were unable to be considered for the fitting of super heaters, the next innovation in steam locomotion, so were withdrawn from use, the last one taken out of service in 1920.
3. Hansel and Gretel are well known in fairy tales, but Gretel was also the name of an Australian yacht entered in the 1962 America's Cup, while Hansel is a famous name from which other sport?

Answer: Horse Racing

"Gretel" may have been unsuccessful when competing in the 1962 America's Cup, losing four out the five races against "Weatherly" of the New York Yacht Club, but Hansel was very successful, winning two out the three races that make up the Triple Crown in 1991.
His Triple Crown attempt may have got off to a bad start, finishing tenth despite being the favourite in the Kentucky Derby, but in the Preakness Stakes, Hansel was a clear winner, finishing seven lengths ahead of the field.
Things were closer in the Belmont Stakes, but "Hansel" beat "Strike The Gold" by a head to claim two thirds of the Crown.
4. Which Chicago-based DJ had his first number one on the Billboard Dance Club charts in USA in 2002 with "Love's Gonna Save The Day"?

Answer: Georgie Porgie

"Love's Gonna Save The Day" was Georgie Porgie's response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks in USA and since then he has also had number one hits on the Billboard Dance Club charts with tracks such as "Sunshine" (2005), "I Believe" (2007) and "Can You Feel That Sound" (2008) as well as hitting number one on the charts in fifteen other countries.
He has also worked with some of music's biggest names, remixing tracks such as "Billie Jean" for Michael Jackson in 1993 and "2 Become 1" with the Spice Girls in 2007.
5. Cynanchum viminale is a leafless plant, native to West Africa, commonly known by which fairy tale name?

Answer: Rapunzel

The Rapunzel plant, also known as the "caustic creeper" is a shrub which contains a milky fluid which causes burns when in contact with human skin, although this doesn't stop the plant being harvested for its many medicinal uses. These include this fluid, when diluted, being used to treat warts, wounds and burns as well as made into ear drops to treat earache.
Further uses for the plant include a root infusion to treat tuberculosis in Mozambique and a malaria treatment in Madagascar, made by boiling the stems.
6. In 2019, the name of minor planet 225088 was changed to Gonggong. By what name was the planet known prior to 2019?

Answer: Snow White

Snow White was discovered in 2009 by astronomers at the Palomar Observatory in California and was so named as it was assumed the planet was white in colour due it being an ice planet, however further studies discovered it was in fact red and in 2019 an online poll was held to decide on a new name.
Of the choices, Gonggong, Holle and Vili, Gonggong was the winner, and is the name of an ancient Chinese water god with a red-haired human head and the body of a serpent, responsible for causing chaos and catastrophe before being exiled.
7. Jack and Jill have been on the South Downs at Clayton, near Brighton, England since 1852. What are Jack and Jill, who played a major part in a 1974 film starring Michael Caine?

Answer: Windmills

Jack and Jill are a pair of windmills that sit above the village of Clayton in West Sussex. Jill was built first, in 1821 and moved from her site in Brighton to Clayton in 1852, while Jack was built at Clayton in 1866. Of the pair, Jill is still working, and is operated by a local windmill society who open her up to the public and grind occasional batches of wholemeal flour which is available to buy. Jack, meanwhile, hasn't worked since 1907 and most of his machinery has now been removed as he is used as a private residence.

Interestingly, most windmills in UK are given female names, making Jack one of the few with a male name. The mills were central to the plot of the movie, "The Black Windmill" (1974) which starred Michael Caine as a British intelligence officer and Joseph O'Conor as the head of MI6.
8. Of the occupations listed, which would be more likely to use a Sleeping Beauty?

Answer: WWII Commandos

The Sleeping Beauty was a Motorised Submersible Canoe invented by Major Hugh Alleyne Reeves who also invented the Welrod pistol, the sleeve gun, and was a part of the team that designed the silencer for the Sten gun and fluorescent night sights.
The Sleeping Beauty carried a single frogman and was used by British, Australian and New Zealand commandos to carry out reconnaissance of, or attacks against, enemy craft and was armed with both limpet mines and explosives.
9. "Boogie Nights" was a popular 1997 film, starring Mark Wahlberg as porn star Dirk Diggler. Among the many other big names in this movie was Burt Reynolds who played which character?

Answer: Jack Horner

"Boogie Nights" (1997) had stars galore, featuring Julianne Moore, Don Cheadle, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Robert Downey Sr as well as the great Burt Reynolds who was nominated for an Oscar, a BAFTA and a SAG for his portrayal of porn movie maker Horner. He won none of these awards, but did walk away with a Golden Globe at the ceremony that also saw Julianne Moore nominated for best supporting actress for her part as porn starlet Amber Waves.
This would be the only time that Reynolds, who died in 2018, was nominated for an Oscar.
10. In the hit BBC sketch show, "Little Britain" beginning in 2000, who was the leader of the weight loss group, "Fat Fighters"?

Answer: Marjory Dawes

The hilarious and overweight Marjory Dawes, played brilliantly by Matt Lucas, is surely one of the rudest and unsympathetic weight loss counsellors ever, as she insults everyone in her group, whilst overlooking her own diet problems. With her regular group greeting of "Hello fatties", and referring to people as "a fat cow", she does nothing to inspire confidence, but does impart helpful dieting tips such as eating dust as it is "very low in fat" and if you have a craving for cake, "Oh man I love the cake!", you should "cut it in half, then it's only half the calories, and because it's only half the calories, you can have twice as much"
