Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. He wrote "Mein Kampf".

Answer: Adolf Hitler

Probably the most notable feature of Hitler's narcissism was self-aggrandizement - his boasting and competitiveness, tied in with pomposity meant to cow his opponents, and make him appear superior.
2. This fictional vixen stole away other women's intendeds, because she could.

Answer: Scarlett O'Hara

Believing herself to be in love with Ashley Wilkes, who rebuffs her because he is betrothed to Melanie Hamilton, she accepts the proposal of Melanie's brother Charles out of spite. When Charles dies in the American Civil War, she is comforted by Rhett Butler, a war mercenary, who is also aware of her fixation on Ashley Wilkes. The war is responsible for the ruination of Tara, Scarlett's home, and she becomes the head of the motley group looking to her for their salvation. This includes Melanie Wilkes, and her child with Ashley. Ashley returns, and Scarlett tries to convince him to run away with her, but he feels an obligation to Melanie. In an attempt to pay the taxes on Tara, she convinces her sister's intended, Frank Kennedy that Suellen has grown tired of waiting for him and has married someone else, thus leaving him free to marry her.

With Frank's accidental death, Rhett Butler proposes and Scarlett accepts. In a marriage of two narcissists, nothing is simple, and ultimately Rhett leaves her.
3. A "humble narcissist", he resigned after being marginalized by the company he cofounded.

Answer: Steve Jobs

As CEO of Apple, in true narcissistic manner, Jobs was determined that Apple would follow a path - HIS path, even if the company was obviously hurting. With no other choice, the company took away responsibilities, marginalizing him within the company hierarchy. With little choice, he resigned in 1985. In 1997, he came back, a changed man. He was still a narcissist, but as other great leaders have found, by being open to others' input, and recognizing earlier mistakes it is easier to move people to your reasoning. A quote from him shows this: "Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is best to admit them quickly, and get on with improving your other innovations."

In his book, "Steve Jobs", published after Jobs' death in 2011, his biographer Walter Isaacson noted he was a "creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing." Another quote from Jobs - "Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren't used to an environment where excellence is expected."

Even in his ultimate death from pancreatic cancer, Jobs was determined to do things HIS way, rather than following the advice of his doctor, who felt surgery was the only positive way to stop it. Instead, for nine months he followed alternative treatments. Although he ultimately did have the surgery, many authorities in the field felt he had decreased his life expectancy, with one expert, Dr. Barrie R. Cassileth of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center bluntly stating he had essentially committed suicide.

In a final quote from Jobs, "Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn't matter to me. Going to bed at night saying we've done something wonderful, that's what matters to me."
4. During his reign, he made sure nobody missed who he was, by erecting four statues of himself in front of a temple.

Answer: Ramses II

It has been suggested that he is the Biblical pharaoh of the Exodus, but no substantive proof has been found. He was a conquering leader, and responsible for many architectural features, including the temple at Abu Simbel, which had four huge statues flanking the entrance.

When Egypt was building the Aswan High Dam on the Nile River, the resulting Lake Nasser would have covered Abu Simbel. In an expensive and intensive project, the temple complex was deconstructed and then reconstructed on a higher plot of land. The dam was completed in 1970.
5. He rigged an Olympic horse race to make sure he won.

Answer: Nero

It has been noted historically that his immature attitudes ruined his parties unless he was the center of attention. As to the Olympics, he was crowned greatest athlete in AD 67 for, among other awards, winning a chariot race in which his opponents drove four horses, but since he'd set the Olympics up, he demanded a team of ten horses.

Historically, it has been said that Nero fiddled while Rome burned. This probably is not accurate, but Rome did burn. Nero blamed it on the rising Christian movement, and is responsible for the most heinous persecutions. Both St. Peter, the first Pope, and St. Paul, the former persecutor of Christians, originally known as Saul, were both martyred under Nero.
6. Because of the murder of his followers, the phrase "They drank the Kool-Aid" came to personify him.

Answer: Jim Jones

Jim Jones' type of narcissism would be noted as "ego syntonic". How he responded to his delusions were consistent with the rest of his personality, which was consistent with narcissistic personality disorder - the desire to be the center of attention, even worshipped, considering himself to be above others.

As Reverend Jim Jones, he founded the People's Temple, open to the oppressed and downtrodden, who did worship him and were willing to do whatever he asked of them. When the "church" was accused of fraud, of being a cult, and of physical abuse of members and children, Jones took his members to a settlement in Guyana, dubbed "Jonestown". Convinced that a visit by a congressional committee was trying to destroy his cult, he ordered 900 followers, primarily women and children to drink Kool-aid mixed with cyanide, or be shot, in one of the largest mass murder/suicides in history.
7. Handsome, charismatic, charming - he was a smooth operator, pathologically speaking...

Answer: Ted Bundy

Narcissists have needs from both internal and external sources. They, of course, love themselves. But they need admiration, approval, attention from external sources. If those sources do not fill these needs, they have no value to the narcissist. It isn't that far to take steps to destroy those that have no value. That was the mindset of Ted Bundy.
8. Unexpectedly, this man was thrust into a role of leadership, at the helm of the ship of state.

Answer: Lyndon Baines Johnson

There are many examples of how LBJ conducted business, including while doing his "business" on the toilet. His brand of narcissism is designated as "grandiose" - he was literally full of himself. Of course, he accepted the adulation of others, but it wasn't his driving force.

He was. A lesser man would have had a difficult time assuming the presidency of the United States following the assassination of John F. Kennedy. LBJ was sure of himself, and confident in his convictions and ability. He was bigger than life.
9. This fictional tyrant headed up a fashion magazine while leaving employees cowering in her wake.

Answer: Miranda Priestly

"Andy Sachs: I don't think I'm like that. I couldn't do what you did to Nigel, Miranda. I couldn't do something like that.
Miranda Priestly: You already did. To Emily.
Andy Sachs: That's not what I... no, that was different. I didn't have a choice.
Miranda Priestly: No, no, you chose. You chose to get ahead. You want this life. Those choices are necessary.
Andy Sachs: But what if this isn't what I want? I mean what if I don't wanna live the way you live?
Miranda Priestly: Oh, don't be ridiculous. Andrea. Everybody wants this. Everybody wants to be us."

This dialogue is from the movie "The Devil Wears Prada". Miranda Priestly is editor of "Runway", a top fashion magazine, and Andrea (Andy) Sachs is her personal assistant, naively coming into the cutthroat world of high fashion.
10. Until the day he died, he insisted the islands of the Caribbean were China.

Answer: Christopher Columbus

Joachim of Fiore, a 12th century Cistercian monk, studied the Book of Revelation of John of Patmos, and prophesied the coming of the Age of the Holy Spirit, in which man would come into direct contact with God. Joachim predicted that a Spaniard would be the one to fulfill the prophecy. Columbus not only believed in the prophecy, but believed himself to be that person.

In 1501, he began referring to himself not as Christopher, but as "Christo Ferens". Although both names mean essentially the same, "Christ-bearer", his new appellation was more basic, more to the point. Around 1500, he wrote a letter which included "God made me the messenger of the new heaven and the new earth of which he spoke in the Apocalypse of St John after having spoken of it through the mouth of Isaiah; and he showed me the spot where to find it."

Although we all learned in school that Columbus was looking for a passage to the Orient, convinced of his own destiny he refused to listen to scholars and mathematicians of his time that he could not have reached China. This, he refuted even to his death. Being convinced only he is correct, and everyone else is wrong is definitely part of a narcissistic personality disorder.
