Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It's a band on the hand or could be a magic wand. It could be used with -brick, -coast, -digger and -smith. It describes a horde of Mongols, a legendary colored fleece, and a generous severance agreement (a color of parachute). What color word applies to all these and many more?

Answer: Gold

Gold or Golden is acceptable.
Gold has always been the source of legends and tales of wonder and woe. At one time salt was prized just as highly. Gold is a yellowish metallic element that may be found free or within a few minerals. It is used in jewelry, dentures and coins. The color gold can be made synthetically in many ways

Gold also has many uses in scientific and medical fields. In the film "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" it is found in the form of dust. Imagine if a big wind came up in the desert and flung your bag of gold dust far and wide into the sand. I believe I would scream.

The color gold has always been associated with royalty and power. Not only is gold rare, but it is extremely dense and heavy. Supposedly only 'royal water' (nitro hydrochloric acid) can destroy gold. It is insoluble in nitric acid alone (where we get the term 'acid test').
2. This word goes with smith, head (for a type of snake), a term for a law enforcement person, and is commonly found in coinage. What is this colorful word?

Answer: Copper

Some countries call their police 'coppers' because they were the ones who captured the bad guys, orig. from Latin 'capere', and old French 'caper'. A copperhead can refer to a poisonous snake, or to a person in the northern states who was a southern sympathizer during the Civil War period.

Copper is much more abundant in the earth than gold, and is a reddish metallic element that is ductile and malleable. It is one of the best conductors of electricity and heat. Some cookware is copper-plated on the bottom to allow foods to be cooked faster. Coins and pipes are also made from copper. It is also used in the arts and in jewelry.
3. It's a reef, a snake, a sea, a gemstone, a polyp and more. What word describes this versatile color?

Answer: Coral

The color coral ranges from a light peach to a bright vermilion. The Great Barrier Reef of eastern Australia is the longest known coral reef at 1400 miles; it is composed of more than 2900 individual reefs, and they host thousands of species and varieties of sea life, both flora and fauna. Coral is not always coral colored.

In fact, it comes in a great variety of styles and colors, shapes and sizes. As a color, coral is outstanding and vibrant in its darker tones, the lighter ones being more apt to go well with other pastels.
4. It's a hot drink in the winter, a powder for confections, and warm cozy color for a room. What is it?

Answer: Cocoa

There's nothing like a steaming cup of hot cocoa when you come in from the cold. Cocoa is made from the cacao tree's fruits, roasted and usually sweetened. It fills you with warmth and a lingering sweet taste. You can put marshmallows in it or whipped cream on top, or mix it with coffee for a new taste sensation. Cocoa grows within 20 degrees north to south of the equator.

As a color, cocoa is a warm calming light to darker brown, sometimes with reddish tints. It goes well with more exotic colors and tends to 'bring them down to earth'.

The cacao tree is native to the Americas. Evidence at an archaeological site at Puerto Escondido in Honduras indicates that cocoa products were first consumed between 1400 and 1500 BC. The cocoa bean was used as a common currency throughout the Americas and before the Spanish conquest. Almost 70% of the world crop is now grown in West Africa.
5. It's an important letter in the title of a book, it's the color of ribbons in an old song, it's sometimes a girl's name, it's a bird's description, and best of all in another book it was a Pimpernel. What shade is this?

Answer: Scarlet

"Scarlet Ribbons" for her hair was a very pretty old song. For Miss Hester Prynne, it was not exactly delightful to wear the scarlet letter A (for adulteress) in her Puritan community in the novel "The Scarlet Letter".

Scarlet is usually a standout among the red shades. The Scarlet Tanager is a very pretty bird. But scarlet also came into use in English as a reference to a woman of inferior breeding.
6. It's a duck; it's a bluish-green to a greenish blue. Its complimentary color is considered coral. What do we call it?

Answer: Teal

The teal is a beautifully colored duck with bright teal coloring around its eyes. The color teal is made by mixing green and blue, and perhaps a bit of black for darkness or dark grey for a moodier color.

Teal is and was favored by many sports teams: San Jose Sharks, Worcester Sharks, Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Pistons, Charlotte Hornets and many others.
7. This is a specific shade of light to dark pink, and named for what it first described. Which?

Answer: Ashes of Roses

This is a delicate color, lighter than mauve and not as strong as pink. It's a subtle and complimentary color to almost any shade of skin. Ashes goes well with white or black, even grey, and some pastels, but can look washed out by a primary or secondary color.
8. In progressive rock, this is a king. In the lyrics of a song it goes with clover, and it's the color of Alabama University's Tide. Which?

Answer: Crimson

"Crimson and Clover" was written by Tommy Shandell and drummer Peter Lucia in 1968. It has been covered by many artists. King Crimson released "In the Court of the Crimson King" in 1969. It was released again in the '80s and '90s.

Crimson is a warm, bright, medium red, often associated with royalty.
9. Technically black is the absence of all color, while white is the presence of all color. Therefore what they create together is not really a color, but a shade, which we call what?

Answer: Grey

Grey (or gray) comes in as many shades as there are mixtures of black and white. Battleship grey is a dark, formidable color; Dapple grey is a background of grey with darker and/or lighter spots or splotches on it, etc. Grey can be light and airy or strong, almost black and forbidding. Grey matches almost any other color as it's a neutral shade.

It can even have a bit of color added to it.
10. This tends to be a strong dark black with some reflective power. It is also a wood. What do we call it?

Answer: Ebony

There are almost as many shades of black as there are of white. White lightens any color to any degree, so it is a bit more versatile. Ebony is also a strong dark, dense and expensive wood, used for furniture, jewelry, ornamental objects and other things.

The piano was once affectionately called ebony and ivory, but that was back in the days when it was actually made from these materials. Such a piece would now cost a small fortune. Ebony is rare, finely textured and dense enough to sink in water. The wood is very smooth when polished and has many uses in the musical instruments' industry. Ebony is also the name of a magazine. The song "Ebony and Ivory" was released by Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney in 1982, and reached the distinction of being on many top 100 lists. Others thought it was too saccharine, and it also appears on the worst songs and duets lists in many places.
