Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which quite interesting TV show, hosted by Stephen Fry, has a segment called "General Ignorance"?

Answer: Q.I.

Q.I. (Quite Interesting) is a British TV quiz show. "General Ignorance" is the final round in the show. The title "General Ignorance" addresses misconceptions, mistakes and misunderstandings in 'common knowledge'. It is therefore known not as 'General Knowledge', but as 'General Ignorance'.

The questions are deliberately misleading, and the obvious answers are incorrect. Incorrect answers are penalised and it is possible for panelists to win with a negative score. This segment has spawned "The Book of General Ignorance", written by series-creator John Lloyd and head-researcher John Mitchinson.
2. What is the name of the main deliberative, policy-making and representative organ of the United Nations?

Answer: The General Assembly

The General Assembly, established in 1945, comprises all members of the United Nations. It provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations.
It also plays a significant role in the process of standard-setting and the codification of international law. The General Assembly meets regularly from September to December each year, and thereafter as required.
3. Who was the silent film star of the 1926 movie "The General"?

Answer: Buster Keaton

"The General" is a 1926 American silent comedy film released by United Artists. The film was inspired by the Great Locomotive Chase, which happened in 1862. Buster Keaton plays Johnny Gray, a Southern railroad engineer who loves his train engine, "The General", almost as much as he loves Annabelle Lee.

When "The General" is stolen, Johnny Gray uses every means possible to catch up to the train, and rescue his darling Annabelle. Buster Keaton performs all his own stunts, his deadpan expression conveying much emotion by combining his expressive body language, dexterity, and comic timing.
4. Which G.P.O. was established in 1660 by Royal Charter during the reign of Charles II?

Answer: General Post Office

The General Post Office was established to oversee delivery of items from sender to receiver. The G.P.O. was dissolved in 1969, changing from a Royal Charter to a statutory corporation.
The Canadian Association of General Practitioners in Oncology is a Canadian Association of medical practitioners, known as CAGPO, formed much later than 1660.
General Printing Office is fictitious. The Government Printing Office is the official printer for the government.
General Public Officials is also fictitious.
5. What is a general ledger?

Answer: A complete record of a company's financial transactions

A general ledger is a complete record of financial transactions over the life of a company. The ledger holds account information that is needed to prepare financial statements, and includes accounts for assets, liabilities, owners' equity, revenues and expenses.
6. Under general anaesthesia, the patient is in a state of carefully controlled unconsciousness.

Answer: True

Different types of anaesthesia may be used individually or in combination as appropriate. Local anaesthesia, regional anaesthesia and sedation are all used. General anaesthesia produces a drug-induced state where the patient will not respond to any stimuli, including pain.
7. In 2009, following a government-backed reorganization, General Motors shed several brands. Which of these vehicles was phased out before the reorganization?

Answer: Oldsmobile

Olds Motor Vehicle Co. was founded by Ransom E. Olds in 1897. General Motors purchased the company in 1908. When it was phased out in 2004, Oldsmobile was the oldest surviving American automobile marque, and one of the oldest in the world, after Daimler, Peugeot and Tatra.
Saturn, Pontiac and Hummer were all phased out in 2010, following the reorganization.
8. A 1969 Dodge Charger owned by Bo and Luke, named "General Lee" appeared in which U.S. TV series?

Answer: The Dukes of Hazzard

The car appeared in every episode but one. The car's name is a reference to American Civil War general Robert E. Lee. It bears a Confederate flag (a rectangular variant of the square battle flag of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia) on its roof, and also has a horn which plays the first twelve notes of the song "Dixie".
9. "The General" (1998) is an Irish crime film directed by John Boorman about Dublin crime boss Martin Cahill, played by Brendan Gleeson. Where was it filmed?

Answer: Various locations around Dublin

Based on a true story about Martin Cahill, who pulled off several daring thefts in the early 1980s, "The General" was nominated for and won several awards, including Best Director at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival and the Grand Prix of the Belgian Syndicate of Cinema Critics.
Even though he was a villain, Cahill inspired grudging admiration even from the police. He was shot dead in 1994 by the Irish Republican Army after getting involved in politics, the one thing in Ireland more dangerous than crime.
