Hale was an editor for Godey's Lady's Book. She spent forty years writing to congressmen, lobbying presidents and writing countless editorals for the creation of an official day of thanks. Incidentally she also wrote the song "Mary Had A Little Lamb". Dr. Walker was a civilian surgeon assisting both Union and Confederate soldiers.

She was the only woman and civilian to be awarded the Medal of Honor on the field of battle during the Civil War. Greenhow was a spy for the Confederacy.
