Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My husband grew up in England until his family moved to the United States when he was 16. The town he grew up in is in the northeast part of England. It is a major seaport town that was heavily bombed during World War II. Its full name is Kingston upon ____. What is his hometown?

Answer: Hull

Next to London, Kingston upon Hull suffered the worst bombings during World War II, with over 90% of its buildings damaged or destroyed. Interestingly, Darral's dad played in the bombed-out buildings as a kid. Darral played in the new construction in the same areas as a kid.
2. Darral's sport of choice both growing up and well into adulthood saw him first as a hooker and then a winger. He scored tries and participated in scrums. What sport is this?

Answer: Rugby

Rugby has two forms: Rugby League and Rugby Union. Darral has played both but here in the U.S. Rugby Union is dominant. Differences include League is 13 a side, you don't have to release the ball when tackled, and you have a scrum if the ball goes out of play. Union has 15 a side, you need to release the ball when tackled, and a line-out is done if a ball goes out of play. And of course, both forms use no protective pads!
3. Darral has a lot of the typical English traits, including his sense of humor and sarcasm. Those that don't have a good sense of humor often take him too seriously. So if I want to be a bit snooty (to try and fit into another English trait) I could say "I really fell in love with his _____ personality".

Answer: Droll

Webster's definition of droll is "having a humorous, whimsical, or odd quality" and lists it as a synonym to humor.
4. Darral's family moves from England to next door to our family in the States (yep, the boy next door). Our first date in 1986 is a blockbuster movie that has supporting characters that include Iceman, Goose and Jester. What movie is it?

Answer: Top Gun

Tom Cruise plays the leading man, Maverick. Kelly McGillis plays Charlie, Val Kilmer plays Iceman, Anthony Edwards plays Goose and Michael Ironside plays Jester. Other interesting character callsigns from the movie include Viper, Cougar, Wolfman and Slider.
5. After finishing college and getting set in jobs, we finally tie the knot in October of this year. That same year saw the first World Trade Center bombing, "Beavis and Butt-Head" debut on MTV and NAFTA passes legislation in the U.S., Mexico and Canada. What year was it?

Answer: 1993

Other happenings in 1993 include Jurassic Park is the top grossing film. Brandon Lee dies of an accidental gunshot on his last movie set. The Waco compound is stormed by the FBI.
6. Darral is so persnickety on his choice of soft drink that he will forego any if an establishment doesn't carry it. His choice of drink was founded by an Atlanta pharmacist, John Pemberton, where it was originally sold at Jacobs' Pharmacy for 5 cents a glass. What soft drink is it?

Answer: Coca Cola

Coke debuted in 1886. John Pemberton's bookkeeper, Frank Robinson, not only named the new drink but wrote out the signature name in his own handwriting. That handwritten script is still the one used by Coca Cola today.
7. According to Darral's relatives still in England he sounds all-American. However, it's amazing how many English terms we have picked up. For example, we all use the term "Have a skeg." What does that mean in American?

Answer: Take a look.

Other words we have crossed over have been jumper for sweater, bin for trashcan, and bloody for just about any good adjective.
8. Variety is not the spice of life for Darral. Besides his one soft drink, he also has one cereal, and one cereal only, for breakfast everyday. It is Frosted Flakes (Frosties in England). What company makes Frosted Flakes?

Answer: Kellogg's

Tony the Tiger is the official mascot and "They're Gr-r-reat!" is the official trademark. Corn flakes and sugar are the two main ingredients. Kellogg's has come up with a reduced-sugar version but Darral will have nothing to do with it!
9. With Darral being the stay-at-home dad, the kids are used to seeing him clean the house. One day when I went to use the vacuum our then 2 year old son was very defensive. "That is Dad's vacuum! What are you going to do with it?" The vacuum comes in many different styles. Which of the following is NOT a vacuum style?

Answer: Front Loader

A front loader refers to a washing machine, not a vacuum.

The upright is the oldest version of the vacuum. A manual crank version was patented in 1868 but it was hard-to-use because the operator had to crank it at the same time it was being pushed across the floor.
10. Darral likes all of the following movie series. All of them originated from popular book series except for one. Which movie series was originally made for the big screen only?

Answer: Freddy Krueger

The Harry Potter series was written by J.K. Rowling. "Jurassic Park" was written by Michael Crichton. The James Bond series was written by Ian Fleming. Freddy Krueger was created by Wes Craven.
