Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 1980 South African comedy film "The Gods Must Be Crazy", what item mysteriously falls from the sky and was believed to be a present from the gods?

Answer: A glass bottle

Written and directed by South African film director Jamie Uys, "The Gods Must Be Crazy" became a cult classic film around the world. The film, set in the Kalahari region of Botswana, centers on a bushman named Xi who has very little knowledge of the outside world.

In the opening sequence to the film, a Coca-Cola bottle randomly falls from the sky near Xi and his people. They interpret the bottle to be a gift from god (in reality it had been thrown out of an airplane). Believing it may be a curse, Xi takes a pilgrimage to the edge of the world to dispose of the bottle. Along the way, he encounters a biologist looking to complete his dissertation, a recently hired village school teacher, guerrillas who are being pursued by the government, and a safari tour guide. During the film's closing, Xi reaches what is known as "God's Window". Believing that this is the "edge of the world", he takes the cursed bottle and throws it off of a cliff.
2. On March 3, 1876, a bizarre incident spanning several minutes occurred when flakes of red meat began to rain down from the sky. In what US state did this event happen?

Answer: Kentucky

This unusual event has become historically known as the "Kentucky meat shower". It took place near the settlement of Rankin, Kentucky. Historical accounts reveal that this meat shower took place for an estimated ten minutes. Although it has never fully been explained, various theories have evolved regarding the meat shower. One theory that appeared in the medical journal "Medical Record" suggested that the meat was the lungs and cartilage of either a horse or a human infant.

The theory was backed after some of the meat samples were tested and analyzed.

Another theory suggested that the meat was actually vomited by buzzards and landed on the surface below. Oddly enough, nine days later, another strange meat shower took place in London, England with vegetables and red "corpuscles" falling to the surface with very little explanation as to why it occurred.
3. In 2010, the community of Beebe, Arkansas made national and international headlines after over 3000 red-winged species of what bird died over the community?

Answer: Blackbird

The industrial and rail city of Beebe, Arkansas saw multiple incidents in December (2010), January (2011), and March (2011) of dead animals take place in the community. The first incident involved the washing up of over 83000 dead drum fish that were believed to have contracted a disease. Shortly after, on New Year's Eve, it is estimated that between 3000-5000 red-winged blackbirds fell from the sky (most being dead). This incident is believed to have been caused from "blunt trauma" due to the setting off of fireworks.
4. In early 2018, flying fox bats in Australia began dying and falling from the sky due to what extreme weather phenomena?

Answer: Heatwaves

Extreme temperatures in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres played havoc on the Earth's systems in early 2018. In North America, cooler temperatures hit the southern United States (particularly Florida). In Australia, these extreme temperatures affected the local wildlife. With temperatures of over 115 degrees Fahrenheit, the sweltering heat became unbearable for many flying fox bats.

In a January 10, 2018 Time Magazine article by Eli Meixler, it was estimated that over 100000 flying fox bats died. Essentially, they were unable to regulate their body temperatures and internally "boiled" to death.
5. One of the earliest known accounts of strange things falling from the sky comes from The Bible. In which book from the Old Testament were the Israelites subject to a shower of falling stones?

Answer: Joshua

During the defeat of the five armies of Israel by Joshua and his leadership, it was written that during their escape they were killed by a downpour of stones from the sky. In Joshua 10:11, "the Lord cast down great stones from heaven upon them until Azekah, and they died." Some interpretations of the Bible account that these stones were most likely "hailstones".
6. In 8th Century BCE, what famous written work by Homer described the falling of "blood" from the skies?

Answer: Iliad

"Blood rain" is a phenomenon in which it was believed that blood fell from the sky in the form of rain droplets. The earliest written account of this came from Homer's "Iliad", specifically Book 11 which stated that Zeus caused rain:

"...and down from on high from out of heaven he sent dew-drops dank with blood, for that he was about to send forth to Hades many a valiant head."
7. In 1872, Scottish chemist Robert Angus Smith coined what term representing high levels of hydrogen ions found in rain and precipitation?

Answer: acid rain

While not an unusual phenomenon, acid rain came about due to the Industrial Revolution. In particular, emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides increased, mixing in with the atmosphere. First noted in 1852, Robert Angus Smith used the term acid rain to demonstrate the effects of pollution in Manchester, England and rainfall in the region. By 1872, he officially coined the term "acid rain".

The effects of acid rain include death of insects, poor soil quality, damage to buildings and structures, and adverse health effects on humans.
8. In a 2009 article written in "Popular Mechanics", what metallic objects were suggested to have fallen out of the sky in the village of Meschera, Soviet Union on June 16, 1940?

Answer: Coins

The article "Weird Stories of Objects Falling From the Sky-Explained", by Joe Hasler, outlined various strange objects to have landed on the earth from up above, one of those being a "shower of 16th Century coins" on June 16, 1940 in Meschera, Soviet Union. It is believed that a buried chest of these coins had been exposed and lifted during a storm due to extreme soil erosion.
9. What 1999 drama film starring Tom Cruise and Jeremy Blackman features an epic scene in which frogs suddenly begin to fall from the sky?

Answer: Magnolia

"Magnolia" centers on the perspective that chance plays a large role in our lives. One scene focuses on the idea that there are multiple consequences for every action. During the sequence, after money has been stolen from a safe, the thief has second thoughts, but cannot return the money. Frogs begin to fall from the sky with many consequences taking place.

As the character Jimmy (Philip Baker Hall) is about to shoot himself, the frogs cause him to shoot his TV set instead. As a result, his house is engulfed in flames.

The character Rose (Melinda Dillon) crashes her car into an apartment and ultimately reconciles with her daughter. The character Earl (Jason Robards) dies while another named Frank (Tom Cruise) just watches the frogs. Linda (Julianne Moore) happens to crash in front of an emergency room to be easily helped.

The final consequence involves the character Donnie (William H. Macy) who is ultimately smashes his teeth after falling from a pole, but is brought to safety by Jimmy.
10. Scientists were baffled after hundreds of what creature from the family Annelida fell from the sky in Norway in April 2015?

Answer: Earthworms

Thousands of earthworms fell from the sky in Southern Norway according to the Norwegian news source "The Local" in April 2015. Biology teacher Karstein Erstad discovered the worms while skiing in the mountains. He said that he saw thousands of the worms just laying in the snow.

While he believed they were dead, it turned out that they were still alive. Popular theories regarding the event have suggested that the worms may have been picked up by a "violent" air pocket and then released several miles from their original location.

Another theory suggested that they earthworms may have been picked up by a "waterspout" and then carried several miles and dispersed at the mountain location.
