On an Orangutangent Trivia Quiz

I was in the 'O' aisle the other day at the supermarket, but got a wee bit sidetracked. Instead of getting the orangutan I really wanted, my trolley got filled with all sorts of other things - see if you can work out what I purchased.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Music: What term is the singular form of opera?

Answer: Opus

An opus is a composition or set of compositions. Beethoven has 138 opus numbers attributed to his authorship; however, as many of them consist of numerous pieces, it was actually many more than this number.
2. Literature: What 2013 book by Daphne Fairbairn is sub-titled "Extraordinary Differences between the Sexes in the Animal Kingdom"?

Answer: Odd Couples

This interesting book tells of the differences between the sexes in the animal world, and how they use their peculiar characteristics to achieve maximum reproductive success.
3. Hobbies: What flowering plant has cymbidium and dendrobium varieties?

Answer: Orchid

Orchids are found across the world, occurring as epiphytes in tropical forests. They have a wide range of size and colour palates. The name orchid is derived from the Greek word "orkhis", coined by a Greek botanist who thought that the fleshy tubers resembled the male anatomy, and they are often associated with fertility and virility.

The picture is of vanilla beans, obtained primarily from orchids of the genus Vanilla. The word vanilla is translated simply as "little pod".
4. People: Who worked on the Manhattan Project, and is known as the "Father of the Atomic Bomb"?

Answer: Oppenheimer

The majority of the effort that went into the development of the atomic bomb took place in Los Alamos, New Mexico, undertaken in the fear that Hitler's scientists had been working on nuclear technology and would not hesitate to use it. Work on the project began in 1942 and elements that contributed to the success of the program were also being worked on across the U.S.

The 'Trinity' test, the first detonation of an atomic weapon, took place on July 16, 1945 and the 'Little Boy' and 'Fat Man' bombs were dropped on the Japanese less than a month later.
5. Sports: What test of full-body fitness pits the agility of a person against various hazards?

Answer: Obstacle

The word obstacle derives from the Latin, to hinder; against, or to block. In an obstacle race, obstacles present challenges that must be overcome to move forward. Obstacles can also be man-made, in the case of road blocks; or natural, as in the picture of the tree here.
6. World: What thing links these three places? Luxor, Istanbul, La Porte?

Answer: Obelisk

Originally, obelisks were erected in pairs at the entrances of ancient Egyptian temples. Their construction is usually of a tall four-sided tapering shaft of stone with a pyramidal top. Cleopatra's Needles, one in England and one in the USA, are examples of obelisks- though have nothing to do with Cleopatra!
7. Science: What volcanic glass is also a DC Comics character?

Answer: Obsidian

Created by chemical reaction due to volcanic eruption, obsidian is a natural glass that occurs wherever silica and volcanic activity meet. While it's naturally occurring, it is relatively soft on the Mohs scale, at 5. As it has sharp edges, it was used by Stone Age people as blades or arrowheads.
8. Geography: Which of the following is a river that runs through Bright, Victoria, Australia?

Answer: Ovens

The Ovens River, over 190 km in length, starts near Harrietville (Bright) and flows through Victoria to New South Wales. The Ovens River flows into Lake Mulwala on its way to joining the Murray River. Many fish can be caught in the Ovens, including golden perch, Murray cod and Murray spiny crayfish.

The other names are Australian rivers, but none of them is in Victoria. The pizza OVEN was a hint for you.
9. General: What poisonous plant is also the common name of a moth?

Answer: Oleander

While the oleander is an attractive and hardy shrub that comes in varieties from white to crimson, all parts of it are toxic. The oleander moth (caterpillar) is named because of its habit of eating the leaves of the oleander tree. It is a bright orange caterpillar with tufts of long black hairs, and though it is a native of the Caribbean region, it is also a common sight in Florida and southern Georgia.
10. Brain Teaser: Find the hidden O word that describes the picture as well. Of the many things I like to eat on the hoof, falafel is not one.

Answer: Offal

While considered inedible by many, internal animal parts such as the stomach, heart, liver, and tongue, pound-for-pound most are more nutrient-dense than muscle meat. They are also likely to be high in minerals, including iron, magnesium, selenium and zinc, and important fat-soluble vitamins.

I hope you used your brain to work out the puzzle!! Of the many things I like to eat on the hoOF, FALafel is not one.
