Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Donald Duck was probably the most recognised duck in movie history. He had a middle name, though. Which of these was it?

Answer: Fauntleroy

Donald Duck's first full movie role was in "The Wise Little Hen" in 1934. In the 1942 short "Donald Gets Drafted", his middle name was revealed. Originally a product of the Disney Studios, Donald Duck movies, shorts and TV programmes have been made in each decade since the 1930s.
2. If you were to order Duck a l'Orange, in a restaurant what kind of cuisine would you most likely be eating?

Answer: French

Humankind has been eating ducks from ancient times and food historians claim that it was common in the Middle East to pair duck flesh with citrus fruits. That Duck a l'Orange originated in France is, perhaps, open to question, however recipes from France dating back to at least 1828 refer to cooking duck with bitter orange.
3. Which of these sports was played by a team called The Anaheim Ducks?

Answer: Ice hockey

The Anaheim Ducks were a professional ice hockey team based in Anaheim, California. The team was founded in 1993 by the Walt Disney Corporation following the success of the animated movie "The Mighty Ducks."
4. What was he thinking of department? In 1986, Tim Robbins co-starred in a movie about an alien duck that traveled from space to earth. What was the name of the movie?

Answer: Howard The Duck

One reviewer on the Internet Movie Data Base (IMDb) summed up the movie in one word: "Ugh". But let's be fair, it did win four awards - four Razzies: Worst New Star; Worst Picture (jointly); Worst Screenplay and Worst Visual Effects.
5. There's an old saying "It's lovely weather for ducks", meaning its raining. In which of these sports would ducks, and rain, be decidedly unwelcome?

Answer: Cricket

In cricket, a 'duck' is a score of zero recorded by a batsman. This may well have come about because in olden days when scores were recorded with chalk on a blackboard, the figure zero looked like a duck's egg. Cricketers don't like to play in the rain: it can be very dangerous.
6. Some trades and professions have attracted derogatory nicknames, such as "shyster" and "hack". What kind of profession would a "quack" traditionally be expected to follow?

Answer: Medicine

My dictionary defines a quack as: "An untrained person who pretends to have medical knowledge." Some say it was short for quacksalver, which came from the Dutch quacken (to chatter) allied to salf (to salve).
"Shyster" was often paired with "lawyer" and "hack" with "journalist".
7. It may have been spelt DUKW, but it was pronounced duck. Just exactly what kind of wartime vehicle was a DUKW?

Answer: Amphibious truck

The DUKW was an amphibious vehicle developed in WW2 from the General Motors 2-1/2 ton cargo truck. It was used to deliver men and weaponry from warships to shore. They were used by the Allied forces in many theatres and came into their own again with the US forces in Korea. They could travel at up to 50 mph on land and 6 mph in the sea.
8. "Donald Where's Your Troosers": Which of these TV dramas featured a pathologist called Donald "Ducky" Mallard?

Answer: NCIS

Dr Donald "Ducky" Mallard was the supposedly Scottish-born pathologist in the stories based around the cases of the Naval Criminal Investigation Service. As another of the characters quipped when asked if NCIS was like CSI: "only if you're dyslexic".
Dr Mallard was played by the veteran British actor David McCallum. You may remember him from "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." (1964 to 1968) and the movies "The Great Escape" (1963).
NB "Donald Where's Your Troosers" was a Scottish comedic song.
9. There have been many ducks in the world of entertainment, "Daffy" and "Donald" to name but two. Which duck, who shared a name with a pioneer of powered flight, had a UK top 10 single in 1982?

Answer: Orville

Orville the Duck was the creation of the ventriloquist Keith Harris and they had a TV show that ran from 1982 to 1990. They had a number 4 UK singles hit with "I Wish I Could Fly, Right Up To The Sky, But I Can't" in 1982.
The pioneer of powered flight referred to was, of course, Orville Wright, who, with his brother, Wilbur, was credited with making a controlled, powered flight in 1903.
10. A duck's quack does not echo.

Answer: False

"A duck's quack doesn't echo" was a frequently repeated proverb, but it was a myth and one that was promulgated for a very long time. To prove that the quack would echo, boffins from the University of Salford in England placed a pet duck, Daisy, into an echo chamber and recorded her quacks.

They established that while the quack did echo, because the original sound was so soft, the echo was hard to hear. They pointed out that to create any echo in nature required a loud sound to start off with. The myth, they believed, sprang up because ducks quacked so softly - and not generally in places which had the reflecting surfaces necessary for echoing. The Salford experiment was widely reported in (serious) media articles. One of the best headlines was probably: "It's Daffy To Believe The Quack Of A Duck Doesn't Echo".
