Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Visited by Odysseus in Homer's "Odyssey", which Greek identity was the king of Aiolia / Aeolia, a mythical floating island?

Answer: Aiolos / Aeolus

Aiolos / Aeolus was the divine keeper of the winds, as well as being the King of Aiolia / Aeolia. He kept the storm winds locked away on the island, releasing them as commanded by the upper gods.

Boreas, Zephyros, Notos and Euros were Anemoi, gods of the four winds. Each was associated with a season and a particular wind - Boreas (North / winter), Zephyros (West / spring breezes), Notus (South / summer rain storms), Euros (East / autumn).
2. Jean Baptiste Point du Sable was the founder of which city, famous for a "great" fire in 1871?

Answer: Chicago

Each of the cities mentioned suffered a "great" fire. London in 1212 and 1666, Boston in 1872, and Rome in 64AD. Chicago's "great" fire was in 1871; it burned for several days and killed around 300 people.

Jean Baptiste Point du Sable is considered the founder of Chicago, also known as the "Windy City" and was the first permanent non-indigenous settler to the area that later became known as Chicago. Point du Sable settled in the area in the 1780s and has had many local sites named in his honour.
3. Fremantle, Western Australia, is subject to a particular medical professional each afternoon in the summer months. Which practitioner can help you to feel better when you're unwell? Hint: it may help to ask "Who?".

Answer: Doctor

The Fremantle Doctor is a cooling breeze that blows up most afternoons in summer cooling down the city of Perth and most of the south-west coast of Western Australia. The cooling breeze is definitely a respite for those suffering through a long, hot summer, making everyone feel better (just like a doctor!). Unfortunately, the cooling effects of the Fremantle Doctor are reversed in the evening and overnight when the Easterly winds blow over the hot land. Residents can almost tell how hot it will be on a particular day based on the strength of the two opposing winds the day before and overnight.

Did the hint throw you off or help you? Dr Who is sometimes known as "the Doctor".
4. Wikipedia has over 40 articles on places named "Santa Ana". Which country does NOT have a Santa Ana locality?

Answer: Australia

Santa Anas exist in many places throughout the Americas, as well as Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Cape Verde, the Philippines and Spain. There is no Santa Ana in Australia, however a quick internet search brings up an Australian swim school in Santa Ana, California!

There are three Santa Ana towns in Argentina, one town in Colombia and several municipalities in the Philippines.

There are no town, municipalities or cities in Australia with the name of Santa Ana.

The Santa Ana wind is a cooling, dry breeze that affects Southern and Northern Baja California.
5. Which Irish hydrographer, Royal Navy officer, author and cipher creator chartered and explored Southern Anatolia?

Answer: Francis Beaufort

Francis Beaufort has left a lasting legacy, with a sea, island and wind force scale named after him. He created the Beaufort cipher, a substitution cipher most famously used in the Hagelin M-209 cipher machine. Beaufort was born in Ireland and grew up in both Ireland and Wales. His first ship command was the HMS Woolwich, in which he was partly sent to do hydrographic surveys. He then spent time charting and exploring southern Anatolia, before publishing his book, Karamania, in 1817.

Sir Francis Drake, Vitus Bering and William Bligh are also well-known sea captains, with Bering also having the distinction of having an island and water body named after him.
6. Which artist co-wrote a song in 1973 for his Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album, then adapted the lyrics in 1997 to farewell "England's Rose"?

Answer: Elton John

Elton John and his long-term collaboration partner, Bernie Taupin, wrote "Candle in the Wind" in memory of Marilyn Monroe, with the idea of someone being "cut short in the prime of their life" being the premise behind the lyrics.

The 1997 version was dedicated to Diana, Princess of Wales, after her death in a car accident. Proceeds from the sale of the song were forwarded to Diana's charities and the single is considered the second highest selling single of all time, after "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby - according to the Guinness Book of Records.
7. Which sport enlists the aid of ropes, lines and knots to propel a craft across the surface of water, ice or land? Hint: this is a generic term which covers many specific sports

Answer: Sailing

Sailing covers sports such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, iceboating and land yachting (among others). A craft adapted to skate across a surface is fitted with a sail (or sails), which catch the wind. Lines are attached to a sail to enable a sailor to control its angle so it can catch the desired amount of wind, which assists to propel the craft in a particular direction.

Ropes are considered the "raw material" to make a line, and knots are used to tie off a line, as well as refer to the speed of the wind propelling the craft.
8. Which flying object was invented in China and was used by Benjamin Franklin to prove that lightning was caused by electricity?

Answer: Kite

Kites were originally made from silk and bamboo, the perfect light-weight materials for making a flying "machine". Kites were eventually made from paper before eventually being made from cheaper light-weight materials, such as nylon, carbon fiber and Kevlar. Kites prefer a windy day to enable them to fly. No wind results in a boring day with a kite!

In 1752, Benjamin Franklin took his kite outside in a thunderstorm and proved that there was a direct link between lightning and electricity.
9. There was a movie released in 1939 starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh. It was based on a novel by which American author?

F Scott Fitzgerald wrote several works on which movies were based, "The Great Gatsby" possibly being the most famous. "2001: A Space Odyssey" was based on the writing of Arthur C Clarke, and Howard Pyle was responsible for inspiring many offshoots of "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood".
