1. Samuel _______ gave his name to the maximum loading line painted on the side of a ship.

Answer: Plimsoll

Samuel Plimsoll (1824-98) was a Member of Parliament with his main achievement being the Merchant Shipping Act of 1876. From this Act came the compulsory painting of a Plimsoll line on a ship which shows the depth to which a vessel may be safely, and legally, loaded.
2. What is the name of the locomotive which holds the world speed record for a steam engine?

Answer: Mallard

The Class A4 loco Mallard operated on the now defunct LNER (London and North East Railway). She was built in 1938 and on 3rd July the same year took the (unbroken) world speed record for a steam engine, reaching 126mph. She is exhibited at the National Railway Museum in York.

The Quicksilver and Silver Fox were also Class A4 locomotives. The Flying Scotsman (Class A3) was the first in the world to record an authenticated 100 mph.

Alec Rose sailed round the world (1967-8) and was knighted for his achievement. Chay Blyth rowed the Atlantic with Capt. John Ridgeway (1966), Francis Chichester circumnavigated the world in the yacht Gipsy Moth IV (1966-7) and was also knighted. Ellen MacArthur was the first woman to win the Route du Rhum (2002) transatlantic yacht race.

Waterloo station in London has 19 main platforms and a further 6 at Waterloo East. It also had an additional five for Eurostar trains, known as Waterloo International, which ran trains to France and Belgium between 1994 and 2007, when the Eurostar moved to St. Pancras.

Driving tests were introduced on the 1st June 1935. Also on this date the first Provisional Driving Licences were issued. These lasted for 3 months and it was made compulsory for drivers to display "L" (learner) plates.

Trinity House provides and maintains lighthouses, light vessels and buoys (the latter mainly in the English Channel) in England, Wales and the Channel Islands.

The De Lorean factory in Belfast (Northern Ireland) closed in 1983. It was most famous for producing the car used as a time travel vehicle in the film 'Back to the Future'.

Completed in 1972, Spaghetti Junction covers an area of 30 acres and serves 18 routes with 2.5 miles of slip-roads. It was Britain's first free flowing interchange not involving traffic lights or roundabouts.

In 1911 the Spirit of Ecstasy figure appeared on a Rolls Royce after being comissioned by the 1st Lord Montagu of Beaulieu. The model was Eleanor Velasco Thornton who had beauty and intellect - but not the status to marry the man she loved. This was Lord Beaulieu's son John Edward-Scott-Montagu, later the 2nd Lord.

The original name for "Spirit of Ecstasy" was The Whisper, with Silver Phantom being a model of RR.
