Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Word-play: My user name is Zippolover because I love zippos. A zippo is a cross between a hippo and which striped animal?

Answer: Zebra

I visit a rather irreverent board that holds a weekly picture competition. Several years ago the instructions were to mix two or more animals and that was where I found my little zippo. The maker was flattered when I asked permission to use it. I do not collect "Zippo" lighters, as some people have asked.
2. I is the ninth letter of the Alphabet and the second letter of my user name. Which of the following "I" animals is *NOT* from Europe?

Answer: Impala

The Impala is a medium sized antelope found in Africa. Impala is a Zulu word meaning gazelle.
3. P is the 16th letter of the Alphabet and the third letter of my user name. Three of the following "P" places are in England. Which one is *NOT*?

Answer: Paisley

Paisley is the largest town in the historic county of Renfrewshire and is the administrative centre for the Renfrewshire council area in Scotland.

Peterborough is a cathedral city and unitary authority area in the east of England. For ceremonial purposes it belongs to the county of Cambridgeshire. As a ceremonial county it has a Lord Lieutenant.

There are two towns called Parkgate in England. Both are in Cheshire.

Patton is in Shropshire. There is also a Patton Bridge in Cumbria.
4. Which of the following "P" words would be good to eat?

Answer: Persimmon

Peridot is a green gem. Pipsqueak is an insult suggesting someone is small and insignificant. Peregrine is a falcon. Persimon is a fruit with a delicate flavour similar to a peach or a mango.
5. O is the 15th letter of the Alphabet and the fifth letter of my user name. Which of the following "O" words would make a good family pet?

Answer: Ori Pei

The Ori Pei dog is a cross between the Pug and the Shar-Pei. The owl would not make a good pet unless you attended the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The ocelot is a wild cat known as the dwarf leopard. Otters are my favourite wild mammals.
6. L is the 12th letter of the Alphabet and the sixth letter of my user name. Which of the following "L" words is the odd one out?

Answer: Lizard

Lions, leopards and lynxes are mammals; cats or felines to be specific. Lizards are reptiles which are cold-blooded and not mammals.
7. Opals used in jewellery are a mineral.

Answer: False

To be classed as a "mineral", there has to be a crystal structure. Opal is a form of silica which is classed as a metal and therefore not a mineral. Rather confusingly, it is called a mineraloid form as it mimics a mineral without having a crystaline structure. Opals occurs in the fissures of almost any kind of rock, but most commonly with limonite, sandstone, rhyolite, marl and basalt.
8. V is the 22nd letter in the Alphabet and the eighth letter of my user name. V is for Valerie, my name. What does Valerie mean?

Answer: Strong and healthy

Valerie is pronounced VAL-er-ee. It is of Latin origin means "strong, healthy". It is a feminine form of Valerius, a Roman family clan name and the French form of an early Christian name, Valeria.

Where I live in Norfolk my name is often mispronounced as VAL-ree.
9. E is the fifth letter of the Alphabet and ninth letter of my user name. Which of the following "E" names means star?

Answer: Estelle

Emma means universal or nurse. Emily means industrious. Erica means ever kingly and is the feminine of Eric. It is also any plant of the genus Erica EG Heather. Estelle is from the Latin and means star.
10. R is the 18th letter of the alphabet and the tenth of my user name. Which of the following "R" words is *NOT* edible

Answer: Red herring

Red herring is an English-language idiom that refers to a type of clue that is intentionally or unintentionally misleading or distracting from the real issue. It is a literary device employed by writers of mystery or detective fiction.
