The islands lie in the Mozambique Channel that is between Madagascar and Mozambique. The Channel is 1600 kilometres long and 420 kilometres wide. The coast of Mozambique is about 300 kilometres away. Senegal has a coast on the Atlantic and both Egypt and Algeria have a coast on the Mediterranean sea.

Some of the orchids such as Angraecum scottianum, Bulbophyllum comorianum and Jumellea anjouanensis are unique to the Comoros. The plant was named Plumeria from the French botanist Charles Plumier.

Following Madagascar's independence in 1960 Comoros started using the CFA franc which in turn was replaced by the Comoros franc in 1979.
