Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Daytona Beach is on the east coast of Florida, just a bit south of the oldest city in the United States (and definitely the oldest in Florida!) Can you name it?

Answer: St. Augustine

St. Augustine was founded in 1565, and is called "The Ancient City." Lots of interest there -- including Flagler College with its Tiffany windows, and the old Castillo de San Marcos built by the Spanish, which was never conquered.
2. Daytona Beach is well-known for the Daytona International Speedway, but where were the first races held on the sand?

Answer: Ormond Beach

Ormond Beach calls itself "The Birthplace of Speed" -- the first car races were held on the beach itself! Ransom E. Olds and Alexander Winton raced there in 1903, and many speed records were set on the sands of Ormond Beach.
3. Daytona Beach holds many special events. One type is held every October and March. Can you guess which of these it is?

Answer: Motorcycle gatherings

While sharks are found in the Atlantic, the events we are looking for are motorcycle gatherings -- sometimes a half-million or more people converge for the Daytona Bike Week celebration!
4. Daytona Beach is not far north of another major tourist destination. For a few years, some used a different name, but this is the long-time name for the place. You have almost certainly seen it on TV! Can you name it?

Answer: Cape Canaveral

Cape Canaveral is the home of the launch pads for the space shuttle program, and was the site at which all of the USA's man-in-space activity was centered. Lyndon Johnson renamed the cape "Cape Kennedy" but the city never changed its name. After about a decade, the name of the cape was changed back to "Cape Canaveral."
5. NASCAR was founded in Daytona Beach. Can you name one of its founders?

Answer: Bill France

In fact, Bill France Boulevard runs straight to the Daytona International Speedway.
6. Beach Street is famous in Daytona Beach. Can you tell which fact is real about it?

Answer: It was named after Mr. Beach

The Beach family was important in Daytona's early days -- the fact is that Beach Street is not even close to the beach!
7. A famous tycoon used to live in Ormond Beach -- for 10 cents, can you name him?

Answer: John D. Rockefeller

Flagler convinced his friend and business associate John D. Rockefeller to go to Florida in the winter for his health. He stayed at the old Hotel Ormond until he learned he was being overcharged, so he built his mansion, The Casements, right across the street.
8. The Museum of Arts and Sciences has, of all things, a major art collection! What kind of art do you think it has?

Answer: Cuban art

The Cuban Museum was based on the art collection of Fulgencio Batista, who fled Cuba for Spain and Portugal after Castro came to power.
9. During the summer months, the rivers and canals of the Daytona area are home to hundreds of an unusual animal on the endangered list. What do you think it is?

Answer: Manatee

Manatees are fairly common in the rivers and canals of the Daytona area. Sometimes I have seen a dozen in the small canal behind my house! Leatherback turtles do not go into the rivers and canals, and I think the other species are pure fakes.
10. Bikers love the bars and other attractions of Daytona. Can you guess which one is really a famous bar?

Answer: Boot Hill Saloon

The Boot Hill Saloon is on Main Street -- directly across from an historic cemetery. It gets its name honestly.
