1. Which city in Sweden gave its name to a Union, signed there in 1397, which united the crowns of Sweden, Norway and Denmark under a single monarchy?

Answer: Kalmar

Kalmar is a city in Smaland Province in south eastern Sweden. It is situated on the Baltic Sea directly opposite the island of Oland. The Kalmar Union existed from 1397 until 1523, with the treaty being signed in Kalmar Castle.
2. Which city, the second-largest in southern Russia, is located on the Kuban River, around 75 miles east of the Black Sea?

Answer: Krasnodar

Krasnodar was founded in the late 18th century by the Cossacks, and was a major trading centre before suffering major devastation during World War 2. Rebuilt after the war, the city became a major commercial and tourist centre.
3. The capital of Carinthia, what is the name of the sixth-largest city in Austria?

Answer: Klagenfurt

Klagenfurt is a city in southern Austria, close to the border with Slovenia. The capital of the state of Carinthia, it is the main commercial and educational centre of the area. The proximity of the Karawanken mountains make it a popular tourist destination.
4. Which town in south west Iceland is the site of the country's main international airport?

Answer: Keflavik

Keflavik International Airport was originally a US Air Force base, established during the Second World War. It remained a military facility for much of the remainder of the 20th century, before a new civilian terminal was opened in 1987. The town of Keflavik itself is, along with Njarovik and Hafnir, part of the larger Reykjanesbaer municipality.
5. Saint Sophia Cathedral and the Bohdan Khmelnytsky Monument are well-known landmarks in which city in eastern Europe?

Answer: Kyiv

Kyiv (also known as Kiev) is the capital city of Ukraine, and is located on the banks of the Dnieper River. Saint Sophia Cathedral, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, dates from the 11th century. Bohdan Khmelnytsky was a 17th century Hetman who led an uprising which created a Cossack State, and is commemorated with a monument of him on horseback.
6. Which city on the Baltic Sea is the capital of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein?

Answer: Kiel

Kiel is situated in the far north of Germany, and was ruled by the King of Denmark until 1864. A major maritime centre, it has been home to the German navy's Baltic fleet for many years and hosted the sailing events of the summer Olympics of both 1936 and 1972.
7. Which Polish city, the former capital of its country, has an old town which was declared the world's first UNESCO World Heritage site in 1978?

Answer: Krakow

Krakow is situated in southern Poland on the Vistula River. It was the capital of Poland between 1038 and 1596. Karol Wojtyla was appointed Archbishop of Krakow in 1964, and became Pope John Paul II in 1978, the same year in which Krakow's old town was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Answer: Kristiansand

The other three cities listed are all in Sweden. Kristiansand, the fifth-largest city in Norway, is located at the southern tip of the country, on the Skagerrak. The city's beaches and zoo (the largest in Norway) make it a popular tourist destination.
9. Which one of these German cities is situated at the confluence of the Moselle and Rhine rivers?

Answer: Koblenz

Koblenz is a city in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, in west central Germany. It lies at the confluence of the Moselle and Rhine, and is an important winemaking centre. In 2010, Germany's largest aerial tramway was opened there, connecting the banks of the Rhine with Ehrenbreitstein Fortress.
10. Which Russian city, on the banks of the Pregolya River, is situated in an exclave between Lithuania and Poland?

Answer: Kaliningrad

The Kaliningrad Oblast was cut off from the rest of Russia when the USSR dissolved in 1991. The city of Kaliningrad (also known as Konigsberg) is home to the Russian navy's Baltic fleet. The city is also home to a number of museums, including the Kaliningrad Regional Amber Museum.
