1. Which large French city is the capital of the Pays de la Loire Region?

Answer: Nantes

Pays-de-la-Loire is a Region in north west France, founded in the 1950s. Nantes, the sixth-largest city in France in the early 2st century, is its administrative centre, although its citizens tend to regard the city as belonging to nearby Brittany. The city lies on the Loire estuary, with part of the centre lying on the Ile-de-Nantes, an island lying between two branches of the river.
2. Formerly known as Gorky, which Russian city lies at the confluence of the Oka and Volga rivers?

Answer: Nizhny Novgorod

Nizhny Novgorod is the capital of the Volga Federal District. The city was renamed Gorky between 1932 and 1990, and was closed to foreigners through much of this time. On the dissolution of the USSR, the original name was restored, and the city became "open" again. In the early 21st century, the city is a major educational and information technology centre.
3. Which river of southern Germany flows from the Black Forest to its confluence with the Rhine at Mannheim?

Answer: Neckar

The Neckar is 225 miles long, and passes through some of the most industrialised parts of Germany. Cities along its banks include Stuttgart, Heidelberg and Heilbronn.

Nice is located a few miles west of Monaco on the French Riviera. Situated at the foot of the Alps, the city is one of the busiest tourist destinations in the country. The city's port provides ferry connections with the island of Corsica.

Answer: Naxos

Located in the south Aegean Sea, Naxos is, like many of its neighbours, a popular tourist destination. According to local myth, Zeus, King of the Greek gods, was raised on the island - its highest point is called Mount Zeus. The Cyclades are one of a number of archipelagos in the Aegean, with over 200 islands.

Franconia, a historical region of Germany, is not one of the modern-day states of that country - much of it lies in northern Bavaria. Nuremberg was the site of mass rallies by the Nazis in the 1930s, and suffered badly during World War 2, with much of the city destroyed by allied bombing.

The post-war trials of war criminals were held there for mainly symbolic reasons. The modern city has recovered and is now a popular tourist destination.
10. Which one of these Scandinavian towns or cities is located within the Arctic Circle?

Answer: Narvik

Narvik is a municipality in Nordland County, Norway, and is located around 130 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The town is located on the banks of Ofotfjord, and is a popular destination for outdoor sports.
