Also known by its German name of Danzig, Gdansk has been a major port and shipbuilding centre since the Middle Ages. The site of anti-communist demonstrations in 1970, which saw dozens of demonstrators shot dead, the port was the site, ten years later, of the birth of the Solidarity movement, led by Lech Walesa, which precipitated the fall of communism, not only in Poland, but throughout eastern Europe.
