Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Longitude west 70 crosses eastern Canada, and several large Canadian islands. Which of these islands is the most northerly?

Answer: Ellesmere Island

Ellesmere (10th) and Baffin (5th) are both in the list of the ten largest islands in the world, but neither has many residents. Ellesmere has less than 200 hardy souls living in an area just smaller than Great Britain. By comparison, Baffin Island has about 10,000 people. Diana Island is a small, uninhabited island on the southern side of the Hudson Strait.

The province of Prince Edward Island is a bit to the east of the 70th longitude line.
2. 70 west meridian crosses the Dominican Republic just west of its capital, Santo Domingo. It also passes very close to the highest mountain in the West Indies, which reaches just over 3,000 metres. What is the name of this mountain?

Answer: Pico Duarte

Dominican Republic is one of two countries on the island of Hispaniola, the western third being occupied by Haiti. It is believed that Columbus made landfall on the island in 1492.

On top of the mountain is a statue of Juan Pablo Duarte, a 19th century politician and founding father of the country, after who it was named. There are three other peaks nearby that comprise the four highest peaks in the Caribbean.

Hkakabo Razi is the highest point in Myanmar, Mount Wilhelm is in Papua New Guinea and Grauspitz is the tallest mountain in Liechtenstein.
3. The 70 west meridian extends from pole to pole, like all other meridians. It crosses over the northernmost point of Antarctica. What name is given to this area?

Answer: Antarctic Peninsula

The Antarctic Peninsula is due south of the tip of South America, and is the southern side of the Drake Passage.

Wilkes Land is on the opposite side of the continent, and neither Queen Maud Land, on the Prime Meridian, or the Ross Ice Shelf, which is on the International Date Line, are anywhere near 70 west.
4. This country has a flag with three horizontal stripes of yellow, blue and red, with eight small white stars. It has 23 provinces, and west 70 meridian crosses several of them, namely Falcon, Lara, Portuguesa, Barina and Apure. Which South American country am I?

Answer: Venezuela

Venezuela is one of the world's largest exporters of oil, outside the Middle East, and has a population of over 30 million. It is bordered by Colombia to the west, Brazil to the south and Guyana to its east. Its northern border is the Caribbean Sea.
5. The tiny island of Aruba is less than 30 kilometres from the South American mainland. It is not a nation in its own right, but rather it is a constituent country. Which European country is Aruba a part of?

Answer: Netherlands

The official name is the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and consists of the Netherlands and the Caribbean islands of Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten. Dutch is one of the official languages, but the creole language, Papiamento, is the most widely spoken.
6. Cape Cod and Nantucket Island are both traversed by 70 W. What US state are they in?

Answer: Massachusetts

The meridian does pass through Maine, but these two places are on the far eastern edge of Massachusetts.
7. The northwest portion of Greenland is just on 70W meridian. Population is sparse, but the United States military has an installation there. What is the name of this frontier base?

Answer: Thule Air Base

Thule is 1200kms north of the Arctic Circle, and at one stage held the record for the fastest windspeed ever recorded- 333kph!

Camp Lemonnier is a naval base in Djibouti, northeast Africa. Camp Courtney is a marine base on the Japanese island of Okinawa. The Dimona Radar Facility is in Israel.
8. The top half of Chile roughly follows 70W, and the capital city sits on that magic line. That city is Santiago, but which other national capital is closest to Santiago?

Answer: Buenos Aires, Argentina

Buenos Aires is 1,100 kms away, Montevideo is 1,350 kms. La Paz is almost 1,900 kms to the north. Quito is over 3,700 kms, and very close to the Equator.
9. Lake Titicaca is on the border between Peru and Bolivia and also very close to 70W longitude. Any regular player on FunTrivia will know that it is the highest navigable lake in the world, so this question is a bit tougher. The lake is fed by over 20 rivers, but which is NOT one of them?

Answer: Guadalquivir

One of the main tourist drawcards to the lake is the numerous islands constructed of totora reeds. There are also several 'normal' islands, supporting a population of several thousand.

Guadalquivir River is nowhere near Lake Titicaca- it is a large river in southern Spain.
10. The Straits of Magellan are near the bottom of the South American continent. What is the name of the archipelago that the strait passes through?
