Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What large US state has the most lakes?

Answer: Alaska

Alaska has over 3 million lakes out of which only 3,197 are named.
The three largest by area are: Iliamna, 1,150 square miles (2,978 km2), Becharof, 458 square miles (1,150 km2) and Teshekpuk. 315 square miles (816 km2).
Wisconsin has more than 15,000 lakes and has shores on two of the five great lakes, Superior and Michigan. Naturally these two are the largest lakes in the state, followed by Winnebago, Pepin and Petenwell.
Even though Minnesota's nickname is the "Land of 10,000 Lakes", the state has more than 15,000 lakes. The largest lakes are Red Lake (both Upper and Lower), Mille Lacs and Leech.
Michigan has over 11,000 lakes, but has more freshwater shoreline than any other state in the US.
2. Both of these USA rivers have a claim that they are the shortest in the world. Which of the two was most recently in the Guinness Book of Records, before the category was eliminated in 2006?

Answer: Roe River, Montana

The Roe River is only 201 feet (61 m) long at its longest constant point.
The D river was listed by the Guinness Book of Records as being the shortest at 440 feet (130 m) long, before it was superseded by Roe.
There was a counter claim that D was only 120 feet (37 m) long, which was rejected and due to the ongoing dispute, the book decided to remove this category all together.
3. What is the largest lake in North America?

Answer: Lake Superior

Lake Superior is by far the largest freshwater lake in the world, covering an area of 82,103 km².
It is on the USA-Canada border and borders three States (Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin) and the Canadian province of Ontario.
With an area of 18,970 km2, Lake Ontario is the smallest of the Great Lakes.
Great Bear Lake is the largest lake entirely in Canada, covering an area of 31,153 km2.
Lake Tahoe is quite small, in comparison, covering only 496.2 km².
4. Bill Clinton signed into effect a law specifying Lake Champlain, Vermont, as the sixth Great Lake.

Answer: True

On March 6, 1998, President Clinton signed Senate Bill 927, which made Lake Champlain, briefly, the nation's sixth lake.
The lake has borders with the US states of New York and Vermont and with Canada's Quebec.
It has a surface area of 514 square miles (1,331 km2) and is by far a lot smaller than Lake Ontario, which is the smallest of the five Great Lakes. Lake Ontario covers an area of 7,323 square miles (18,970 km2).
The Great Lake status was rescinded on March 24, following an uproar.
5. Chaubunagungamaug is the name of a lake in New England. You don't really need to look up a dictionary to find its more common name, which is what?

Answer: Lake Webster

The lake is near the town of Webster, Massachusetts, very close to the border with Connecticut.
It has a surface area of 1,442 acres (584 hectares).
Its longest name is Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg which is the longest name of any geographical place in the US.
The name comes from the extinct Loup language meaning "Fishing Place at the Boundaries-Neutral Meeting Grounds".
Its humorous translation, 'You fish on your side, I fish on mine, Nobody fishes in the middle' is thought to have been originated by Laurence J. Daly, editor of The Webster Times.
6. Under a two mile thick layer of ice at the South Pole is an unfrozen lake the size of Lake Ontario.

Answer: True

Lake Vostok is by far the largest subglacial lake in the world. The surface temperature of the area above the lake is around -60 Celsius, but the water doesn't freeze because it absorbs heat from the interior of the earth.
It is estimated that the ice sheet above the lake is a few million years old, placing its origin to the Miocene epoch, which is the first geological epoch of the Neogene Period.
7. The state of Michigan has a shoreline longer than the Eastern shoreline of the USA (Eastern shoreline running from Maine to the tip of Florida).
